    Nook For Mac Application Problems

      I double-click on the NookforMac image in my applications folder to open the application.  The NookforMac program begins to open.  The image "nook by barnes & noble" appears and then it freezes on this image and doesn't go any further. It won't actually let me access my Nook anymore on my computer. I don't know what to do.  I was able to use the application only one time before.  I want to be able to update my NookColor and do things such as create bookshelves, archive books, and so on.

      Please help me figure out what's wrong.

          Nook for Mac does not open for me either.  If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion, I suggest installing Nookstudy.  It works and has more features than Nook for Mac.

          Nook for Mac is not  required to update your NC or to sideload content.  Your NC will either update automatically via WiFi or by dowloading and manually copying the update file using your computer.

          Bookshelves, archiving can be done directly on the NC.  You really don't need Nook for Mac for anything other than reading your books on your computer.

            It worked here for quite some time, and then suddenly stopped several weeks ago. Reinstalling it helped, for a day. Now it opens, and freezes, and does nothing.

            NookStudy for Mac continues to work (Shhhhhh... don't let them know, they'll break that one, too!).

            As cbtengr said - you not only don't need, but can't utilize Nook for Mac to do any of the things you want to do. It's simply a reader for your Mac. I use it only to make sure that I have all my books downloaded on my computer, and to get information about what I purchased.

              Same here.  Nook for Mac (running under Snow Leopard) worked well for a while.  Now it doesn't.  It freezes during the splash screen.

                Nook nor Study will work.  Below you will find the the log information; interestingly I was able to select information out of the databases by hand for the "failure" case.

                $ sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Barnes\ \&\ Noble/BNDesktopReader/ClientAPI.db

                sqlite> .tables { which lists bn_schema_version }

                sqlite> select schema_version from bn_schema_version where id = 0;
                27

                note: ClientAPI_ForIndexing.db and both dbs in DesktopReader also select the versionid

                • Re: Nook For Mac Application Problems

                  I am a developer and looked into this a bit. In the /var/log/system.log, I see this error:

                  Mar  1 22:24:17 ISC-krhodes BNeReader[77695]: wrote:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>^M\n<eReader>^M\n</eReader>^M\n to path:/Users/keithrhodes/Library/Application Support/Barnes & Noble/BNDesktopReader/config.xml
                  Mar  1 22:24:17 ISC-krhodes BNeReader[77695]: BNeReader(77695,0xa0c54540) malloc: *** error for object 0x1512f40: double free\n*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

                  This is clearly a bug in the nook for mac software. Hey B&N, please fix this!!!

                    Once the app fails at the start screen, right-click anywhere on the grey area and click on reload. This will get you to your library.
