PC only sees part of HD+ Internal Storage

    ChiG

So this is a little strange.  I bought my HD+ on Friday and it's been great all weekend.  I took a lot of time to sideload music and videos and some other files onto it, customize the wallpaper, add my avatar, etc.  Then, last night (Monday), when I connected it to my computer, the My Files folder was longer showing up in the Internal Storage drive that the nook appears as on my computer (running Windows 7).  I disconnected it, turned off the HD+ and turned it back on, and then reconnected it, and this time the My Files folder did show up.  However, when I opened it, there were only 4 folders visible (Books, Documents, Magazines, and Music), the rest still did not show up (Videos, Pictures, etc.).  On top of that, the files that I put in the Books and Documents folders were there, but when I opened the Music folder, it was completely empty even though I put about 40 folders in it over the weekend.  I once again unplugged the HD+ and confirmed that I can access all the video files, music files, etc. directly on it and all of the folders in My Files do show up when I use Open Explorer.  However, every time I connect the HD+ to my computer, only the Books, Documents, Magazines, and Music folders show up in My Files, and none of the files in Music actually show up when I open that folder.  I have turned off and back on the HD+ about 10 times to no effect.  I emailed Barnes & Noble about this last night, but have not gotten even a confirmation that they got my email and are looking into it, much less an actual fix.  Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know how to fix it?  All the files are apparently still on the HD+, they just don't show up on my PC's end when I connect it to the computer, which makes sideloading and managing sideloaded content somewhat difficult.  I've really liked the HD+ so far and with all the work I've put in transferring files, I'd hate to have to return this unit and start over with a new one.

Press the USB icon on the Status Bar.This will display the Settings Menu. Place the USB into "Camera (PTP)" this should correct it.

Unfortunately this does not fix the problem.  When I do this, even fewer folders in the Internal Storage show up on my PC.  Interestingly, I put some files in the My Files from my computer and then used Open Explorer on the HD+ to move them into the correct subfolders that are not showing up (Pictures, Video).  However, when I connect the HD+ back to my computer, those files still show up in the My Files folder even though they've been moved.  Any other suggestions?  Is there a way to uninstall the driver from my computer so that I can just plug the HD+ in and have it reinstall the driver?  Everything showed up fine for three days until literally overnight without any changes to either my computer or the HD+, one of them just decided not to show all the files.  BTW, I did finally get an email back from B&N stating that to resolve this they need to talk to me one and one and told me to use the Instant Chat on their website.  However, when I try to initiate this, it tells me that they are too busy and to come back later.  I'm hoping a reinstall of the driver will fix it if someone can tell me how to uninstall it first.  Thanks!

I don't know if the circumstances are at all the same, but I'm having the same issue. I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, if that makes a difference.

I was transferring videos to my HD+ when the Screen Timeout kicked in. I had Screen Lock enabled and it seems that automatically locked the Internal Storage down because the file transfer immediately stopped. Not realizing what had happened, I tried to browse the folders via my PC and found that nearly all of them had seemingly vanished. Unlocking the screen didn't help in the least.

After double-checking, I have confirmed that I can still find and interact with the folders and files in 'My Files', each file type will show up in the correct section (Books, Movies & TV, etc.) and anything placed on the Home screen will not drop.

I tried turning the HD+ off and booting it back up...twice. I don't know if I did anything differently the second time, but a number of folders seemed to re-appear. Unfortunately, this does not include any folders or sub-folders I had created (Videos/YouTube, Podcasts, Pictures/Screensavers), nor can I view any of the files that are still available on the Nook via the PC.

As a test I have tried dropping a .png file into my 'Pictures' folders and a .mp4 into 'Videos'. Those files were added to the appropriate Library categories and appear in the 'My Files' folders in addition to the earlier files. I have also tried to recreate the 'Podcasts' and 'Light Novel' folders, but the HD+ will NOT allow those names; whenever I try, it automatically resets the folders name to 'New Folder'.

I certainly hope this helps someone more technologically inclined than myself figure this out.

I just made a post about a very similar issue with Mac OS X. In my case, I see the folders in the nook but it doesn't let me drag anything into them. Its acting as if it is locked even though I have made sure to open all of the permissions. Looks like my short term solution will be to use an sd card until this gets worked out. Unfortunately Calibre isn't seding the device either.

What do all of you get when you go to SEttings and do the following?

                      1) Settings

                      2) SEttings> STorage Management.

                      3) Settings > Storage Management > USB Connectivity

                      4) Change from Meia Device (MTP) to Camera (PTP)

I had to do this to get my NExus 7 to work. PErhaps it helps here.

On my Mac PTP opens up iPhoto and the Nook shows up as a device. Unfortunately, the only option there is to unmount.

Dean and I both had a long kvetch together last year about MTP and why it's a pain.

For those who are seeing this weirdness, it definitely sounds like MTP issues to me.

The resolution for clearing MTP-related issues turned out to be to restart - wait for it - your computer, not your tablet.

The problem with MTP is that it is a design in which your computer speaks to your tablet as if they were both equals, and they come to consensus on what is where.  But your tablet doesn't update your PC about changes in a thorough way until the PC's side of the conversation is forced to restart;  the only way to get fresh info is to restart the PC.

I've been delighted by how well Calibre works with the HD+, though, and surprised.

I've just restarted my computer and I'm still having the same issue; I can't view folders or files created or sideloaded before this started but I CAN view ones from after.

I hadn't thought to try Calibre because I'd kept hearing that it didn't detect the HD+ very well or at all. ...aaannnddd bugger. Seems Calibre can't detect any of my 'missing' books either.

BN has taken something bad and made it worse. I do not see a file manager app per se in the shop, but the "my files" menu in the home area should let you browse the device and delete now-unmanageable files. You can see and copy out using the upload feature in dropbox. This evening i resorted to adb pull to extract a backup. ADB is not trivial to set up, though.

The /SD Card isn't detected at all.

As a test to see if I could repeat the conditions necessary to trigger this bug I've placed a file in a new folder and, while in (MTP) first and (PTP) second, tried hitting the power button to put my HD+ into sleep mode while Screen Lock was enabled. Interestingly (and possibly disturbingly), I don't have any problem interacting with any of my files or folders with Screen Lock on and active.

Letting Screen Timeout kick in doesn't seem to cause any issues either, so my original theory is provably false. I have no idea whatsoever as to what could cause this to happen...aside from DeanGibson's emphatic belief that (MTP) is just flat out screwy. If that's right, then I'm just flat out disappointed in Barnes & Noble.

So hey, funny stoy.  You know how I just flat out wiped my HD+ and started from scratch?  Since then I've side-loaded more than 20 GB of video and audio files.  Heck, I spent the better part of the day watching movies.  As soon as I noticed update 2.0.4 I jumped on it hoping for the best...and just hours later I've gone from that previously mentioned 20+ GB of stuff to 1.16 GB.  Know what I still have?  A handful of podcasts (six!) and a few dozen free apps I haven't even gotten around to doing anything with.

The real kicker is I discovered this while writing this post to talk about a seemingly unrelated issue where I lost a friggin' ton of content.

As you might imagine, I'm so hopelessly frustrated it's difficult to stay calm.  I didn't even do anything this time around; I was watching videos, I noticed my MicroSD card was bugged the hell out, I connected my HD+ to my PC...wait...

I downloaded a .zip file from the Dropbox app and transferred it to my MicroSD card with the Open Explorer app to see if I could while it was acting tweaked out to see if I could (and yes, I could).  I hadn't done anything else differently to the internal storage that I can recall.  It seems to me like a long-shot, but that is literally the only thing I'd done between watching videos and losing everything.

I'm curious - were teh video files on your internal storage, or on the card?

I noticed something interesting last night - the chunk of storage that's presented to us as being under /sdcard when using a file browser is also mounted under /data/media. (that is, the internal storage is called /sdcard;  the removable is  called /external_sdcard, IIRC.)  I wonder where or if that external mount point turns up in /data,, and if that could be a part of the problem you encountered.

As I've said elsewhere, the sdcard is the achilles heel for me of the device.  It can get put into "check for errors" mode for no apparent reason, and when it does so, the device as a whole just gacks.  I hope that BN fixes this, but for now I've simply stopped using it.

On my device, the update didn't wipe out files.

Well, after doing a hard reset and loading everything back onto the HD+, it's worked great for about 2 months until tonight.  I got one of the Office suites and wanted to move some documents I had created on the HD+ onto my computer, so I plugged in the USB cord and sure enough, when I opened up the My Documents folder in the HD+ (not the SD Card) storage, it was completely empty.  I restarted both the HD+ and the computer several times and switched back and forth between the Camera USB mode and the MTP USB mode and it will not see anything.  The files show up on the HD+ itself but not on the PC end when I have it connected via USB.  I guess I'll have to email the files to myself to get them, which is kind of a crazy workaround.  I'm not happy about the idea of having to do a hard reset every couple of months to resolve this issue.  It looks like there are several other posts about this phenomenon and the consensus seems to be that it's because MTP sucks.  That's all well and good, but is there any way to fix it so that I can use the USB connection to manage sideloaded content?  I got the HD+ because it's lighter to carry to and from school and work and I can use it to write up reports or take notes and then transfer them onto my computer when I get home.  If the computer can't see what's on it, that pretty much negates the entire reason I got the HD+ in the first place.  I might as well stick with my Nook 1st edition for reading and continue schlepping my laptop back and forth, at least my chiropractor will love me!

This issue (folders not being seen) has to do with Android 4.0 using MTP. It's a different way of seeing files and has some issues.

So there's nothing B&N can do.

You'll just have to experiment with using PTP instead of MTP (Via Settings > Storage Management > USB connectivity).

Or use Dropbox or Open Explorer's wireless sharing feature.

Yep, that's what I'm doing.  It's a good strategy although still somewhat difficult when trying to sideload movies, Dropbox doesn't seem to always like transferring files larger than 1 GB, but at least the SD card and all of its folders still show up when I connect the HD+ to the computer with the USB cord so I can put the movie there and use Open Explorer to move it where I want it.  I understand the issue with MTP but since B&N did equip the HD+ with the option to switch to PTP (although that's just as buggy and even fewer files show up in that mode), it would have been nice if they could have at least also equipped it with the option for a pure USB mode and allow us to choose the option that best works since it seems that many of us are having this issue while many others are not.  Still, I'll take this issue over disappearing apps/books any day!

That's a very good idea - a pure USB mode.

Honestly, I don't understand this change to MTP. Things were working just fine and then you change in Android 4.0 to a whole new file protocol.

After reading more about MTP - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol#Drawbacks

It seems even less of a good idea.

Apparently lots and lots of people think Google made a big mistake shifting to MTP. I agree whole-heartedly.

The idea, as far as I understand, is to make your device seem like one combined media device rather than a drive.

But most people want it to be a drive. Everyone understands how a drive works. Everyone is familiar with it.

My HTC One S phone has Android 4.0 and does not appear to use MTP.  When I plug in the cable to connect it to the PC, it has an option to mount as a drive.  When I select this option, a drive appears in Windows with all folders and files available. The folders and files can no longer be accessed by phone apps. There is another option for HTC Sync Manager, but this does the same thing except a second drive is available which contains an install program the the HTC Sync software for the PC.

So did HTC customize Android 4.0 to support a USB drive in Windows?  Does anyone else with an Android 4.0 or 4.1 phone see MTP being used?
