Read in store function not working properly

      Device: Nook Color

Problem: Read in store function is not working properly. Books will not open for weeks at a time.

Methods tried: Customer service has suggested erasing/deregistering the device and a factory reset. Both methods have failed to resolve the problem.

Who contacted: Customer service five times. On the fourth time a customer service representative said that there was a problem with the server not resetting and that was what was causing the books to not be available. She gave a date for that problem to be fixed which has passed over a month ago. The last time I contacted customer service they have absolutely no idea what I was referencing.

Looking for: Any direct information on this problem.

I wouldn't hold my breath on its getting fixed.  I encountered the problem a year ago and worked for a couple hours with the folks at my local store, who, in my presence, opened a formal problem report on my behalf.  That was 05/21/11, and there's been no apparent change since then.  It works every once in awhile at my store, but usually not.  I assume that it works OK when they, for other reasons, do a thorough reset of some server-side code, which has the effect of zeroing some relevant memory and accidentally reinitializing flags back to "false".  I compulsively check the problem, just for fun (as a software engineer who's easily amused), and here's what I've seen at my store:

It's July, 2014, and the Read in Store is still not functioning properly.  I've tried repeatedly to get help with the problem  The answer is always to do a hard reset and re register the device, but that doesn't work, just as it didn't work in 2012.  In my experience, I can start a book on one visit, but then days or weeks later, I'm told immediately that my time has expired or they are unable to download my content.  Either way, I can't access the book.  Customer Service is useless.  They have a known problem which, for whatever reason, they are choosing to ignore.  It's very disappointing.  I love their apps for iPad and iPhone, but their HD device is just a piece of junk.  Will I buy another Nook?  Absolutely not.  Will I recommend Nook?  Absolutely not.  I'm leaning toward getting a Kindle.  At least Amazon doesn't make claims about the device that are patently false.  B & N should just face up to the fact that Read in Store doesn't work and stop pretending that it does.  I'm beyond disappointed in B & N.  And I don't shop there very much anymore.
