    Need to apologize to all

It was brought to my attention that when I use all caps some thought that I was shouting.  My eyes are not that great and it was easier for me to see.  I did not to mean to shout at anyone. I apologize to all my nook friends. :smileysad:

People who complain that you are "shouting" when you use all caps are really just being condescending. They fully know that you are not trying to "shout".  What they are really saying is "I've been using message boards longer than you and I know that everyone says that all caps mean 'shouting' so I'm going to call you out for it to show how cool I am."  In fact the only context in which all caps are "shouting" is when a few emphatic sentences are in all caps or when the content of the post is consistent with a shouted rant.  It's similar to using bunches of exclamation marks.  If the content of the post is *not* consistent with a rant and the entire post is capitalized, then clearly the poster is not "shouting" and it's disingenuous to accuse them of it.  All caps are more difficult to read, however, because we're not (or are no longer) used to seeing it.  When I started using message boards, we didn't have the option of using mixed case from our 3270 terminals, so virtually all "appends" were in all caps.  So when I see all caps, rather than feeling like I'm being shouted at, I feel like I've hit a time warp back to the early 80s!  I worked with some guys with very limited vision and they frequently used all caps.  If it's easier for you to see caps, I'd suggest just putting "PARDON THE CAPS, I HAVE VISION LIMITATIONS"  at the top.  If anyone can't deal with that, it's really their problem, not yours.

I'd have to agree with you on this. Either the person is doing it to see better or they don't realize that typing in all caps in generally not acceptable but rarely are they doing it to "yell".  My hubby has a tendency to do it and I have NO clue why other than I think he figures it's easier to read. Who knows but don't sweat the small stuff.

You'll find that there are a lot of volunteer forum cops on these boards. Don't worry about it.

All caps = shouting was more of a legitimate issue in the days of monochrome fixed-width monitors when it truly was much harder to read all-uppercase text on screen. Anybody giving you a hard time about it today is trying to strut their Internet cred' and being juvenile about it. With today's font technologies, all caps isn't that big of a deal. There are likely colored logos and other nonsense on their screen that's a lot more distracting than your actual message.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR POSITIVE COMMENTS:smileyvery-happy: I WILL FEEL MUCH BETTER NOW POSTING COMMENTS KNOWING THAT MOST OF YOU KNOW THAT I AM NOT SHOUTING.

No, we're not being condescending.  I do find a wall of all capital letters to be annoying and hard to read.  It was one thing to encounter all caps when that was the only typeface on the computer or printer; it's a whole other thing in an era with full mixed case fonts.

I'm not saying you need to be "sorry", just learn from the experience.  If you have a tough time reading the lower case then you might want to increase your font size (usually Ctrl-+ in a Windows browser or CMD-+ in a Mac browser).

after all, I think we can all agree that it's frustrating to read my message here, yet it's a simple swapping of numbers for letters.  It's not a matter of being offended, and I don't see it as shouting, but by the same token I wouldn't go in to a store and curse or speak to an employee as if I were talking to me friend, I wouldn't visit an online forum and type in all caps.  It's 2014, most computers have quite a lot of built in aides for the visually impaired.  And ad Omni pointed out most browsers have an easy to use method to increase the font size.  Which I use as I'm using a large monitor with a big resolution which means text tends to be quite small.

Uhm, no. People who are offended by walls of capital letters aren't being condescending, rude, know-it-alls, strutting their cred, or anything like that. What is offensive is presuming that we are. Why would you even assume that? Weird.

Anyhow, not capitalizing every single letter is just common courtesy. Please be courteous. I think everyone gets along better when we're all courteous to one another.

If the issue is font size on the screen, every browser will allow you to bump up the font size. You can also increase the font size across the board through your OS (Win and OS X I know can do it, but I'd imagine LINUX can too).

Why would you assume that use of uppercase implies shouting? It was a convention 20 years ago, but in this age of

flashing colored and bolded fonts, people who want to be obnoxiously loud have other ways of doing it. Context matters. Somebody obviously new and asking questions clearly isn't intending to shout. Why the terse answer?

If you don't like uppercase and find it hard to read, fine. Say so. But please, let's stop with the posting of nothing more than "uppercase is shouting" in response to someone obviously trying to figure their way around technology. That is also not corteous, but the difference is that you already know this. They don't. If you have nothing more to add to the conversation, just ignore it. They can choose change their fonts (once they know how). You choose can not read their post (and know how).
