    Wifi glitch after update

My Nook Color WiFi was working fine with the 1.1 build.  After the update it seems to be jamming the signal on my wireless router.  When the NC WiFi is on, a wireless connected laptop and desktop (routed through the d-link) will not work.

When the wireless on the NC is off, all is fine.  I went back to factory settings on the NC and the problem was resolved.

      Ideas?

I'm having the exact same issue.  If you find a fix please update.  Thanks!

I've got this "glitch" also.  I use WEP 64-bit.  Though I've switch to WEP 128 and WPA (TKIP), I can't get it to work with any of them.  My router doesn't have a WPA PSK option.  I've attempted rebooting.  I've not done a factory reset so I don't know if that helps or not.

Very disappointing.    The wierd thing is I can sometimes connect to an unsecured linksys that's barely in range so I reset my home router so that it is no longer password protected.  No good.

It keeps cycling between "Obtaining IP address" and "disconnected".

                • Re: Wifi glitch after 1.2.0 update and Connection problem

I experienced the same problem just after the update. I can log onto a weak unsecured Netgear signal only. Attempting to connect to my WIFI results in cycling from connecting to disconnected. I contacted support via e-mail (forget getting through on the phone) and got some lame suggestions. My WIFI router easily connects to my 2 lap tops. It's not the router; it's the new software 1.2.0.

Has anyone received acknowledgement from BN concerning the problem?

To those (above) who have recently written about their wi-fi problems, please know that the wi-fi problem with the v. 1.2 update has existed since the update was first released, a week ago today.  I lost all functionality (eventually, after I reset it myself) of  my original NC.  I now have a refurb'd one which BN sent to me; I have not allowed that one to update and it's working fine, just like my original one worked prior to the update.  I can easily connect to the internet.

I check into these boards off & on now... after posting extensively about my problems and not finding any info that fixed the problem (not that people here didn't try to help, they did... and others, unlike myself, received help and actually--apparently--fixed their NC), to see if the problem(s) continue and since they do, I'm not going to try to update my new refurb'd one yet.
As for anyone receiving acknowledgement from BN concerning the problem, specific to the wi-fi problem: NO!  There was the infamous reset of last Wednesday which may or may not have been related to the update, and someone wrote here that BN did acknowledge that somewhere here on this board.  I never saw that BN acknowledgement but I didn't hunt for it either.

In any event, if you read through these threads you will see that a lot of people have had problems with the update, regardless of whether it is wi-fi connectivity or someone else, and few, if any, have received much help from BN's tech support regarding it (again, some people garnered info here that helped them, at least initially).  I contacted tech support five, maybe six times, and each time I had to go over the whole thing with them again and always wound up with "call back in 24 hours..."
One CSR did, however, offered to send me the new (pre-owned) NC which I'm grateful to have since at least I am back to a functional one.

If you go on FaceBook, you'll see that the BN page as well as the "Nook" page is filled with complaints about customer service. Pretty bad.

You're right "terWW", it is not your router, it's the update.

                      .

Here's an update to my connection problem after the software version 1.2.0 update.

I brought my Nook Color to a local Barnes and Noble Nook help desk. They "deregistered" and then registered my Nook.

This corrected the problem. I can again log into my secure home WiFi.

I had the same problem with my D-Link router and fixed it with a firmware update.

If you have the same model I do (DI-624 Rev. C), the only firmware version I was able to find that both worked with the NC and didn't reset my connection every hour or two was v2.76b20 (which was only officially released in Singapore, apparently).

If you have a different model, Google firmware for your model, but be prepared to try several versions (and note that D-Link's site only has the latest official version released in your country, so you may need to delve into user forums like DSLReports if that one doesn't work for you).  I went through five or six before finding this one.

                        • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I never got anywhere with tech support she left me on hold for forever and I gave up and had things to do. I do have a d-link in the house and I am having a new router installed today. If that doesn't solve the issue then I am going into BN. I think it's crap to have to go back to factory they should get a fix.

                            • Re: Wifi glitch after update

                              Their fix is this:

Please follow the steps below to Hard Reset your NOOKcolor. Please note that a Hard Reset de-registers your device as well as erases all local content such as contacts, sideloaded documents, personal information, 4 digit passcodes, etc. It is recommended that you backup any sideloaded material before continuing.

                              1. Ensure your NOOKcolor is powered off; to do so, depress the power button for 5 seconds. Your LCD screen should turn off.

                              2. With your NOOKcolor powered off, Hold the Home Key (NOOK “n,” logo below the LCD), while simultaneously depressing the Power Button for up to 25 seconds.

                              3. Your NOOKcolor will begin the start up process, Do NOT let go until a confirmation window appears asking if you would like to, “Factory Reset Your Device?” This will De-Register as well as erase all content and information on your NOOKcolor (Including the 4 Digit Pass-code).

                              4. Depress the Home Key to continue with the Factory Reset.

                              5. Depress the Home Key again to Confirm.

                              6. Your device will now begin the clearing process. Upon completion you will regain access to your NOOKcolor however all account and personal information (email, contacts, pass-code, credit card, etc..) will be deleted from your device. You will then be able to Re-Register your NOOKcolor and start anew.

And then they said to redo the upgrade.

I do not see how this is going to fix anything. I am very disappointed in BN at the moment.

I'd look to see if there's an IP address conflict. I did have a case where, for some odd reason, my NC and one other device on the network grabbed the same IP address through DHCP and it

caused this kind of symptom. You could try:

                              1. Shut the router and all the devices off
                              2. Turn the router back on
                              3. Turn each device on, in turn, and give them time to acquire an IP address
                              Something simple to try anyway...

                                • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I have two xbox's connected, four laptops, and two main desktops all on the same network and now the NC won't connect. I don't think it is a issue of the same IP address. I am not moving settings around in my other devices to accomdated the NC. I think BN needs to come up with a "real" fix. In the mean time I will wait for the new router upgrade I am having installed anyway to see if that works.

                              • Re: Wifi glitch after update

If it's just one other machine that can't connect (assuming you have more than one other machine) its probably a duplicate IP address issue.

If the laptop is Windows, go to Start, Run. Type cmd and hit enter. Type ipconfig /release and hit enter. When you get the prompt back, type ipconfig /renew and hit enter.

See if the laptop and the Nook can both get on the network.

The glitch I found is that the Nook can't connect to hidden SSID's any longer. I was able to verify this by enabling the broadcast of mine and the Nook connected without issue. I hid it and the Nook dropped the connection.

I presently have my router broadcasting the SSID, but filtering the MAC addresses.

I am hoping BN releases a maintenance update that corrects the hidden SSID issue.

For those of you entertaining their support telling you to reset it and then apply the update again...you are more than likely just wasting your time as the same issue should happen once you are back at v1.2.

                                    • Re: Wifi glitch after update

So you chose "Other Network", typed in the SSID, and it wouldn't connect?

                                      That's pretty odd.

What if you just forget your hidden network and then re-add it to the nook?  I'm using my hidden network after the update without any problems...

This is the same issue I am having with my wife's CN we just bought today. Could not connect once I stopped broadcasting the SSID. When I manually add the network and WEP key, it goes through the 'obtaining IP address' loop and never connects. I turn the wifi off, reenable SSID broadcast, turn wifi on, and connect to the now visible network and it connects with no issues.

Have not noticed any interference problem with my wife's laptop or my wireless print server.

It looks like just a really poor implementation of the Network handling functions. This is the only Android device we have so far, but I assume Google was on the ball as far as the generic Android network implementation. It looks like B&N just borked it for their custom OS.

p.s. Our Nook is Ver 1.2.0

We just bought a Nook Color last Friday (4-29-11) after reading many glowing reviews of the product. Got it home and put it on the charger and was able to connect to our router to register it. Played with it that evening and even downloaded the free book, able to connect to the internet and several web sites. On Saturday it would connect to the router but said no internet. Still not able to get to the 'net. Weird that it worked out of the box but not after that. It supposedly was already updated with 1.2. Our IPod Touch connects with no problems still. The router was brand new at Christmas time so it's not a "old router" issue.

Should I call B&N tech support and add my voice to the apparently growing tide of discontent?

Update to earlier post: Things are working just fine now. After reading though several forums about the problem, the easiest fix did the trick. Shut off the Nook, shut off the router, restarted the router, restarted the Nook. All is fine, no more problems. Not sure what a router "reboot" did, but it solved the problem. Our router is a recent model Netgear N600 and I understand that there have been problems with older routers and the Nook. Your mileage may vary.

I'm having an almost identical issue on my office WiFi network. I was connecting fine right up till the upgrade, then after the upgrade I can't connect. I don't have the option here of reseting the router. This is a hidden SSID.

So whats up with all that.  I am so frustrated....... I do not want to do a hard reset on the nook because I cannot see how that is going to help.

This is happening to me too- I have a Westell 327W that was originally not hidden but we connected via mac address.  After updating the nookcolor, it makes it so that none of my computers (even the one plugged into the ethernet) can access the internet.  I called tech support, told them I do not want to do a hard reset, and their response is for me to wait a week and call them back to see if they have a fix for it.  Sigh.  I will be following this thread to see if anyone comes up with a reliable work around.

Also wanted to add that it somehow prevents the computer that is plugged into router via an ethernet cord from accessing the internet as well.  More than willing to experiment with this after I get home from work, so any suggestions that won't break my nookcolor are welcome :smileyhappy:

I've posted a couple of times about my problem, which is the same as those of you have described here.  After updating my NC, which had worked flawlessly prior to the update, I could no longer access my Wi-Fi.  I tried EVERYTHING... every suggestion here, and then some.  I finally did a hard reset.  I discovered that I couldn't get into that hard reset menu simply by pressing the on/off + N buttons without first plugging in the AC cord into the NC.  The tech person didn't know that was necessary (I learned that on here).

Anyway, I''m sorry I did that.  Now I get to the point where the NC looks for the WI-Fi connection and the same problem occurs.  It recycles until it stops searching.  So now I am without any NC functionality.

B&N said they'd replace it.  I just found out they are replacing it with a refurbished NC not a new one.  Great.  Given that the NC hasn't been 'out' that long, what does it tell  you that they have refurbished ones already?

I am disgusted with B&N and the Nook Color and everything associated with it.  If this episode, I mean, fiasco, hasn't convinced me to chalk it up and buy an iPad, I don't know what will.

I hear Amazon---which has the absolute BEST customer service in the entire universe---will be releasing a tablet in the not too distant future.  That may be worth waiting for.  After all, Amazon's Kindle is vastly superior to the Nook (original) so I can well imagine that their 'for real' tablet will be far superior to the Nook Color's 'patch-work' tablet.

I'm thoroughly disgusted with the whole thing.:smileymad:

                                                                  • Re: Wifi glitch after update

So I went to a B&N to see if I could provision my NC after a hard reset there, and it worked.  My issue (I can't even guess if everyone else's WiFi issues are the same as mine) seems to have to do with my specific router (or its setup).  I'll mess around some more and see if there some settings, such as channel or security settings, that will help.  It sure looks like there's an issue in the Android 802.11g protocol implementation.  My router reports that an Android device retrieved an IP from it, but it obviously didn't follow all the way through.

But every time I get my internet working for the computers  at home and try connecting with the NC, I lose the internet. The NC keeps trying to obtain an IP address and eventually says  the wifi is connected, but no internet. I guess until BN gets a fix, I will have to pay daily visits to BN.

                                                                          • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I found that if I shut the Nook down and reset the router the computers and other gear connect normally. All is fine till Ifire up the Nook again. Leave the router off abit over 15 seconds and you should be OK, other than the Nook. I have disabled the Wi Fi on the Nook till something changes or another update comes down. I took mine to the local B&N in Wilkes Barre Pa. and basically was told that waiting for an update is the best option or dropping back to old version of the software. I choose to wait although another thought is that a different newer router may fix the glitch....

                                                                        • Re: Wifi glitch after update

My PC is on wireless and I had to run a network cable from my PC to the westell router to get on the internet. Once I did that I was able to access the router and I disabled WEP. Now my PC will work on wireless again but if I enable wi-fi on the nook color it will knock out the PC. Then I turn off the NC and reset the router, the PC will work again. It seem that when the NC is on wifi, it removes the Gateway address on the router.

                                                                          • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I've tried everything.  I'm on DAY THREE of messing with this DAMM Nook Color.   I was on the phone with tech support, who's answer was to call my ISP.  WHAT?????   Are you kidding me???

When I try to connect the WI-FI on the Nook, it finds my WIFI and then all it does is say "Obtaining IP Address" and sometimes it will briefly say "Connected, but no internet" before it starts "obtaining IP address again".   Unless WIFI is shut off on the NC, my other devices (laptops) are interrupted continually while the Nook HAMMERS my router.  Everything is restored to normal when I shut off the WIFI on the Nook Color.

Finally I got a supervisor on the phone and while he went through my router interface with me.  We changed all the security settings and blah blah blah - but nothing worked.

I went to McDonalds to try their hotspot and it DID work there.

I can't get the IP address for the Nook so I can't hardwire a static DCHP to the MAC address because it never OBTAINS one so I don't know which IP address it's even trying.

I've found many posts in forums related to this - how it doesn't release the IP after DCHP lease expiration and it causes this problem.  You can look up the problems they had at Princeton with this.

It shows that there is a connection to it, but it tells me that there is a connectivity problem.  I rebooted it again, but this didn't help it.  Anyone have any suggestions, before I contact the tech line?

She said they're working on it right now and no idea when they will solve the problem...

I just got off the phone with tech support a few moments ago and got a similar response. The posts on this feed are good, but I believe no mater what we try it still wont work and it's definitely a BN problem. My tech guy was smart, polite and as helpful as he could be (he sounded liked he had been yelled at a lot today). He didn't even bother to try and troubleshoot. He said wait 4 hours and try again! That's the best he had!!! Good luck, and let me know if you get anywhere :smileysad:

As I posted in another thread a possible source for this problem I noticed while I was looking through my router. I was curious if my router even saw the CN since the message my CN gives is obtaining IP address forever then nothing. Well the answer is yes my router is assigning an IP address but a problem exists. When I look at the list I see a hostname android_ [then following that is a series of numbers and NON-ASCII characters] some of what follows is binary information. I cross reference that name to my CN MAC ID and they match. From what I am witnessing is my router doesnt know what to do with this wacky hostname. This may not be the only problem but would explain the communication issue between the router and device.

Perhaps allowing the consumer to put in their own hostname in the device would be a solution and for the immediate seeable future perhaps find the missing character in the 1000 lines of code or take out the misplaced comment or whatever is in the code causing the hostname to be partially binary.

                                                                                          • Re: Wifi glitch after update

Updated my NookColor to 1.2. Now when I have the WiFi on on my NC, our other machines cannot connect to the outside through the router. We have to turn off the WiFi on the NC and reboot the router. We have DSL and a Newell router.

There was a very useful post over on the Nook General Discussion Group under the topic "How is this even possible?" It's a DHCP problem with the update; it's a problem within Android.

The big question is: is B&N is aware of it and trying to fix it?

                                                                                            From what I've seen here, I'm not so sure . . .

                                                                                              • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I sideloaded the update on Tuesday and promptly noticed problems with connecting the wireless access point at work including my other wireless devices being kicked off. I do not have this problem with my router at home and NC shares the router with the same other two devices at home plus a different pc. I switched the NC from the WAP to a regular router at work, left the other devices on the WAP, and everything is fine.

Fortunately, I thought the problem was due to the wi-fi on my new phone and didn't brick the NC before switching it to the other router; but it really sucks that B & N is reacting to this so poorly. Having just engaged in a four month fight with HP to get brand new and badly defective laptop replaced, I find this pervasive lask of concern for the consumer very disheartening....

I did the manual update 5 days ago and have been having problems with WiFi ever since. I had no idea it would have been due to my Nook update. I have spent the past 5 days on the phone with my internet provider as well and we have gone through everything, NO LUCK and now I know why!!!!  I am fed up. Reading the posts I now know it has to do with my Nook update and all I can say is this better get this fixed ASAP.

                                                                                              Irritated!!!!

                                                                                                  • Re: Wifi glitch after update

Wonder if some setting needs to be changed?  I didn't have time to call Verizon to see if they can help?  I can live with this annoyance but it would be nice not having to turn off the device, pc and router to get one or the other to work.  Anyone found a way to make this work pre 1.2? I do not that NC and Mac are not sharing the same IP address.

                                                                                                  • Re: Wifi glitch after update

I messed up my (hotmail) email later in the week, so I stopped in at a store sunday night. The Nook person unregistered my Nookcolor and regesistered it. It worked fine in the store. Now, at home, I tries to connect and then disconnects.......I have been able to get online iwth a fair signal from an unsecured person. What's with this???? I will keep reading to see if someone has the answer.

But I have my own router not one supplied by the cable company so I know exactly what my settings are. And except for locking down the security I don't have a lot of other options messed around with.  I have my NC, my TV and my Blu-ray player all connected via wifi all the time and nothing ever gets knocked off.

I found information from last August on an Android forum where people were having the same problem with their cell  phones after they updated to Android 2.2 Froyo. Here's a link: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=10170

One person wrote "I'm using a Netgear WG102 access point. I believe the WG102 and Belkin N1 both use an Atheros chipset, so maybe that has to do with the problem?".

I have been able to connect on an older Belkin router and on a new Netgear. On the N1 administrative page I can see it has assigned an ip address - it's the NC that doesn't know it's connected.

If they would just add the capability to assign a static ip address we could all connect again. I really don't like the suggestion that we should just go and buy new routers.

First I downgraded back to 1.1 and then I had to hard rest my westell 327w and re-setup all my wireless devices. Now I can browse with my nook and all other devices as well. I noticed in this thread a nook moderator has acknowledged the problem with the westell modem

                                                                                                              http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOKcolor-Technical-Support/NOOK-Color-1-2-Update-Frequently-Asked-Questions/m-p/985066/message-uid/985066#U985066, guess I will wait until 1.2.1.

My HTC phone has trouble connecting the same places that the nook no longer connects to. I see this has not been updated in some time. I guess I have no solution forthcoming.

Marvin, if you have not bought a lot of apps from BN, you can roll back to 1.1 and root your device.  Then you can buy use Marketplace apps instead of BN apps, your device is blocked from auto-updating, and you are back in the more reliable 1.1 network stack.  The BN app store is not available to rooted 1.1 devices, but everything else and much more is.
