Nook Color wont update after I drop and drag

Ok so Im new here and I downloaded the updated file to my desktop. I then plugged in my NC and it showed up on my computer page as Media(F). I dragged it into this and safely removed the device and nothing. I plugged the device back in and its on the device where he folders are listed. So it copied to the device. The nook just wont start the update. I have tried the restart and nothing. Is the (F) drive the correct drive to drop the file into? People keep talking about download it straight to the root but Im not sure what that means? Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you didn't just drag and drop the shortcut...happened to me. Had to copy the .zip file again.

I dragged the update zipped file icon into the NOOK listing in the MY COMPUTER file on my computer.  It took a while, but it started to download finally and worked great.  It doesn't go into a file on the nook, it goes into the drive listed NOOK in your My Computer icon on your desktop.  See if that works for you.

I had the same problem. I sat 2 NC side by side to update both at the same time. The first one worked fine, just as planned. The second one on the other hand wouldn't work. I deleted the first file and drug the zip file over again into the j drive......and nothing.........then I read all these posts, and I figured it out. I was forcing my Nook to sleep trying to hurry the process....NO NO bad bad....eject the Nook and leave it alone. Let it go to sleep by its self. Whew! I have been messing with this for 3 hours. Now It's updated to 1.4.1...awesome:smileyhappy:

I normally use FireFox as my browser, but my update failed.  Reading something on page 1 of this post hit a cord when someone said using IE.  After failing miserably with FireFox, IE and sideloading worked like a charm.  If there are any BN Staff reading this - please update your instructions to include IE.  FireFox doesn't let you choose where to save it, and this should have been my first clue that something was wrong.

While I was waiting on the failed download, I was chatting with a BN chat line person asking what the differences are after the 1.4 upgrade and the Nook Tablet.  The only difference now seems to be that the Nook Tablet has a dual processor, extended battery life and a microphone.  I think I'm just fine with the Nook Color.  Just wish I hadn't paid the $249.00 price!!!!  That's happened to me 2x.  I bought a Nook 1E 2 weeks before they dropped the price, and then I bought the Nook Color about a month before they dropped the price.

I called tech support because I had the same problem.  They told me I'd have to wait until I got it over Wi-Fi.  After reading some of the replies on here I powered down and removed my micro SD memory card.  After restarting I copied the update again to my Nook Color and it started the update within a minute of the time I removed the Nook from the PC.

For what it's worth I had the exact same problem described here. I downloaded the 1.4.1 update onto my computer and copied it over to my NC. No luck. Based upon previous comments on this topic I thought I'd go ahead and reset my NC*. I got right up to the second confirmation window where it warns you that resetting to factory defaults will delete all of your data. Since I didn't want that to happen I cancelled the reset. But then I tried copying over the update ZIP again and ... presto! This time it work. I can only guess at the inner workings of the NC. But I presume there is a background thread somewhere that periodically wakes up looking for files with certain signatures. Whatever happens during the lead up to reset must kick start that thread again (this is all pure speculation).

In any case the take away is: I did NOT have to complete a reset but I DID have to get right up to the brink in order for my NC to recognize the update file.

It was a very frustrating experience. Hopefully this will save others some time.
