    Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

I've waited to see if this problem pops up on the boards, but really haven't seen it addressed in a dedicated thread.  The touchscreen on my nook color keeps going crazy.  I first noticed it when I would try and play the crossword puzzle and after a few answers the game would just start scrolling through the puzzle.  But the truly troublesome part is when it starts rapidly shuffling through pages of the book that I'm reading or randomly selecting words on the page that I am currently on.  Sometimes it does the opposite and the touchscreen doesn't even respond to actual gestures.  I have turned the nook off, then on.  I have rested it.  I have also reset and deregistered the device.  They work with varying degrees of temporary relief.  I assume that this is a software glitch and not a hardware issue.  My reasoning is that restarting can act as a very temporary solution.  I have heard that a planned software update is coming in January.  But I can't be the only one with this issue.  If not then this is a major impediment to even reading a book.  That being said I am hoping that this issue gets addressed in the next few weeks.

I have had the same issue with my NC.  So far I have been underwhelmed by this device.

My NOOKcolor seems possessed!  I've had this issue with many different books--pages turning by themselves, menus popping up, etc.  Today, I even "bought" a book I didn't want without realizing it or even looking at the book's details--I happen to see it in my library later in the day (hope I get a refund :smileyhappy:  Restarting seems to help, but is very irritating.  Now I've password protected my purchases--which I now highly recommend due to this "freak out" issue.

bn.com is also very slow and/or unresponsive--I haven't been able to access my "ebook library" all day.

I hope Barnes & Noble can figure out the fixes for these issues soon!

Do you by any chance have your NOOK color plugged into the charger when this happens?

Several of us have noticed that at least initially, when you try to enter data into the touchscreen while the NC is charging, you end up getting double letters and other weirdness.

That all goes away if the NC is not attached to the charger.

No I don't usually use it when its charging. This happens at any time.

Mine acts possessed too. On more than one occasion.  To me, it seems like some phantom is "driving" the nook haphazardly, OR it is "remembering" (despite being turned off and recharged and the like) being touched when it wasn't on or still process being touched from the use before.

I usually turn it off and back on, and that works, but it keeps happening. And has happened often enough (sometimes zooming in and out and in and out and not letting me scroll) that I have thought about going to the BN store.

What do you think? Glad I'm not the only one. Thought maybe my kid had touched it too much (he's gentle, but he does do puzzles and the drawing app on there).

Yeah happend to me when the charger was plugged in and gave me double letters etc but stoped when unplugged

I just got my 2nd NC, the first one wouldn't hold a charge.  I was reading and the screen started to dim and would flash back to its original color and this would go on and off several times.  Then all of a sudden the screen went white and then shut off, came on, and went back 25 chapters.  I guess I'll have to take it back and get a Kindle instead.  Too many bugs with the NC and I shouldn't have to play with it to get it to work.

                      • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

I had similar experience with the touch screen.  Several times while I was reading an ebook or in the web browser the cursor would jump all over the place uncontrollably.  I had to reset the device and often times the reset would go into a loop.  It would reset itself several times by itself which is really annoying.  The only way to get out of that is to leave the device power off for a period of time then it goes back to normal.  Is this a software glitch or do I have a bad hardware?

The problem of run-away pages has frustrated me as the first time it happened the pages turned all the way to the end of the book. It has taken me several days to figure out what was happening and replicate the action. If your finger rest on the outside edge of the page (just inside the plastic frame) the page can run away from you.

Your finger resting on the left outside of the page will take you backward. The right side of the page will take you forward. I have been talking tech support for two days and they think that it might be isolated to my nook but I do not think so. They are will replace my nook but will hold to the original 14 days to be able to return the nook. I think that I will return the nc, and purchase another one so that I can have another 14 days to determine if everything is all right. All this being said, I absolutely love the nc (NOOKcolor) and hope that I can get the run-away pages resolved. Reading at night with out a book light, no eye strain, being able to get books from the library, transfer all my files, all my books from other sources is awesome

I bought my wife her NC for Xmas and NEVER had an issue. We have also been running the 1.1.0 software for some time so there are no significant changes goin on. The issue you describe has been intermittent. More significant in the cool mornings, less likely to occur in the afternoon until today. Now it happened twice and both times required a reboot-and-wait period. Normally it was just clicking the middle button that stopped it.

I do trouble-shooting of hardware/software systems for a living and to me this "effect" that we see is a software runaway condition brought upon by a marginal hardware input. The way I see the Wife's system is that the hardware is fading, causing the issue more frequently and more severely. That's why some people replace their Nooks and its all better, and some just have the same problem. Either way, it seems that the problem will creep back in until they stabilize the hardware or put an smarter input filtering cap on the software.

One more thing, a lot of folks mention the "left side" of the device. We note it on that side also, although my wife is left-handed :smileywink:

                                    Hey rickpalmer,

Have you tried cleaning your screen at all? A lot of times smudges and debris can throw off the NC from properly registering user input.

If you're still having issues after trying that, feel free to send me a PM with your serial number & email, and I'll get together with CS for you.

                                    Hope this helps!

I seem to be having issues also not sure if it's a screen problem or something else.  The first thing that happened was I cleaned up my homepage to only have my news papers and the book I was reading to appear and then one day I had about 10 books from my library appear.  I removed them and sent them back to the library only to have them show up the next day.  Glitch or do I need to change a setting somewhere.  The second problem is the book I am currently reading (800+ pages) sometimes opens where I left off and sometimes it starts at the cover of the book and I have to figure out where I was.  I have started leaving bookmarks and that works but that is also an extra step I shouldn't have to do.  Anyone out there with suggestions or anything?  I love my Nookcolor and I don't want glitches.

I am having the same problem; my Nook Color fasts forwards through pages, even when it's lying on a flat surface. I just posted on the general/main Nook message board about this problem. Unlike the YouTube video posted, my Nook does not have the pop-up screen popping up all the time--it fast forwards seamlessly, as if someone was pressing to go forward. Nonetheless, this problem sounds like it's not so isolated. I hope it's the software and not faulty hardware that's causing this problem. It's really unacceptable that B&N is reluctant to replace malfunctioning Nooks and threatens to charge people for a new unit if they can't replicate a problem that is intermittent but negatively impacts use of the device. I haven't contacted customer service yet; hopefully the negative encounters with B&N store managers is isolated and not a widespread anti-customer policy. I'm going to contact someone at B&N and see about replacing my Nook Color. Maybe this problem would be "acceptable" for an off-brand budget ereader purchased at a drugstore, but for a $250 device--no way. $250 is a lot of money to me (and many others, I'm sure).

I've made some observations regarding the  TouchScreen "Freakng Out".

                                      1.  Freaking out while charging is somewhat expected and probably has to due with a grounding issue.  Since the Touchscreen is capacitive and not pressure sensitive the User and device must be properly grounded.  When a user is holding the device they are both grounded.  When the device is plugged in the ground loop becomes much different.

                                      2.  I've also noticed that my device needs time to warm up.  If the device is on the table and the room is a cool 65 degrees, once the device powers on i notice the touch screen feels 'wet' as if there is condensation on it.  There really isn't any condensation it is just the temperature difference between the cold glass and my warm hands.  The interaction of the two seem to leave small 'wet' spots where I touched it.

Cleaning the display and giving it time to 'warm up' seem to help.  but it is very frustrating and dangerous.     I"ve had the device delete email messages while web browsing and almost make book purchases I did not want.   I am going to try a screen protector to see if that creates some insulation "Fingers crossed"

                                        • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

Mine did the same thing for the first time last night. I was browsing the Web, and suddenly the browser started to go forward/back and zooming in and out on it's own. Couldn't use any soft buttons or gestures, and had to do a reboot using the power button. For what it's worth, the temp in the room was probably about 50 degrees, so definitely colder than its normal environment.

I thought I was the only one to get, as I called it, a possessed nookcolor. I returned it one week after buying it for a new one. I'd reset it, I'd done everything. What was really fun to watch was when it played suduko by itself. And I wasn't touching it.

My second one has been tons better and the only time it's skipped pages have been things like people have said, grazing the edges accidently. Or a big on for me is when I'm reading a tense book (thriller) I tend to fist my hand over my mouth and end up changing pages with the warm air that way.

So I think there are some ncs that are just plain possessed and the rest are just sensitive.

I love my 2nd one though! First one I thought would drive me batty!

Same issue here with run away pages.  Each time it's happened my thumb was just protruding over the edge of the side onto the page.  Seems at some times the screen is over sensative and other times it's not lol.

Most likely a lot of the current issues will be fixed with the next updates as they were with the regular nook.

I've had my CNook for a week now and have noticed little updates here and there in various places.

                                              • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

BN implemented the side-touch gesture as an alternate page-turning mechanism to overcome a human factors issue.  It is NOT a bug, it is a very USEFUL feature.

Other tablets require the table to be held in one hand, while the other finger swipes across the page to turn it.  This finger swipe, plus the tablet's own weight, acts as the downward force on a lever, with the fulcrum being the joint of the third finger.  After a while -- this hurts!

NC, however, allows the use to hold it in BOTH hands, and simply touch the screen withing the first 1/4 inch of space to turn that page.  A deliberate tap gesture with one's thumb in this space, anywhere on the edge, will, and should, turn the page.

Obviously, if you let your thumb hover over that space, lightly touching the screen, it WILL queue up several page turns.  Please rest the thumb on the side rail, or on the cover if you have something like a Vasco or Soho trifold cover.

                                                    njnookman,

                                                      Nonsense.

I bought one today and I find it stunning for its images and the things it does well.  I had not planned to get one but it was pretty impressive.

However, with warm hands, this reader is oversensitive.  There is no reason I should be on page 9 and then suddenly on page 63.

And when I type a letter into the keyboard I shouldn't suddenly see another page altogether show up (this happened about 3 times at the B&N store too and we were both puzzled by it).  But other pages suddenly appearing out of nowhere in a situation like this, that's a problem.

I plan to keep this reader since I love the access to nat'l geo which i am trying out, and I think the monthly charge is very decent for that.  But the touchscreen  is altogether too sensitive and should have a sensitivity setting.

I have a 'light touch' so this is a bit over the top.  It happens in the magazine too.  And it varies (is inconsistent), because sometimes a touch does NOT do anything and if you make it VERY firm, then it works ('back' options usually but it happens on a few screen buttons).

A workaround on oversensitive page-turn events:  they can give us the option of not using page-turn taps but use swiping only.

Or they can have an option to lower sensitivity of the touchscreen.

As for the charger-time typing, there should be a B&N insert telling people not to try to register or set a WiFi password when the unit is charging.

As I can see, I am not alone with my Nook problems.   I have had the following problems:

click on the right of the screen > display goes back one page instead of forward

click on the right of the screen > the screen displays a highlighted word and sometimes goes into a crazy mode where the highlighting jumps around the screen.  When that happens, I have to turn my Nook off and the back on again to get it to settle down.

click on the right of the screen > nothing happens. Have to click several times to get the page to turn.

Sometimes, my Nook responds when I move my body (such as on the subway) and anything can happen but usually it skips pages and I have to find my place again in the book.

The Nook is an annoying reader.  It is too sensitive to be used casually with confidence.  My other issue with the Nook is the way the shelves and book lists were designed to work and how they look.  In my opinion, the look is a major turn off.  I also dislike the B&N shopping screens so much that I don't buy books there anymore.  I found it surprising that B&N has such bad suggestions for books.  I have ended up with three books I don't like and I can't delete them.  So, I now get books on recommendation from a local independent bookstore that works through Google.

if your touchscreen is freaking out, make sure you wipe your screen... It's sensitive to finger prints... ( FYI: sensitive to heat also)

                                                    - If this doesn't work, yeah go ahead and perform erase and restore factory settings ( you can find this under device info)

-if this doesn't work.. then perform a factory fallback on the device--- hold the power button and the horse shoe button below the nookclor at the same time for 15-20 seconds and turn it on again..

if it still doesn't work, then go ahead and have it replaced

I had this problem, too.  I read in another thread that a user was advised to clean off the screen and turn the power off.  It's worked fine ever since.

I had a problem when the “Nook” charger was plugged in, the screen would become over sensitive “Freaked out Screen”. It made the Nook impossible to use while plugged in. I called tech support and they first had me restore the Nook to factory settings which did not solve the issue. I found out some of the chargers or cables cause electronic vibrations in the touch screen and they will send you out a new one. I went to the B&N store and they gave me new one to try and it corrected the problem. Also, remember to keep the screen clean. One side note, the orange “N” finally turns green when fully charged.

I don't have a NC yet. But I actually think this may not be B & N fault but a problem with the Android OS itself. I have a Droid Incredible phone and does the same thing. All of a sudden will just randomly scroll and jump around.

In searching for some remedies I've see several Droid forums reporting the same thing with other phones. Something with Android 2.1+ it seems.

I have gotten this a few times.  It seems to do it to me when it is  cold.  If I turn it on in the early morning and try to use it right away it will do the full freak out.  My house is set at 65 during the night.

                                                              • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out
My CN is possessed as well. Started a couple days ago. Happens on different books and unplugged. Screen has been cleaned. I'm just holding it in my hand flat and the nook flips pages or highlights words definitions. No change in temperature. No breathing on it. So far the temporary fix is to push the power button to sleep mode and turn it right back on. Last time however, the nook worked correctly only for a few minutes before acting up again. Is there a better way to clean the oil off the screen then just a damp anti-static cloth. Anyone tried breaking the rule before returning the Nook and using alcohol to clean it and see if that clears up the problem. My current on-going major issues: 1) Screen going crazy. 2) Poor PDF support. Unit is going back for a full refund around the 15th if I don't hear some good news.

My Nook has been very good and I've had no problems except when I read in an environment of very high (extreme) humidity the color Nook can freak out.  It has happened to me three times now so I can definitely say it has something to do with condensation.  This last time I was very careful to make sure my fingers were not wet but it still freaked out.

The fix everytime was to shut the Nook off and move the Nook into a dry area.  Once I got really worried because it was so freaked out it wouldn't shut down and I thought I might have to take the battery out and then I remembered you couldn't take the battery out but it finally shut down.

Once in a dry area it always started working correctly again.

                                                                  • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

                                                                    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.assid.android.nookrecalibrate

Unfortunately you need to root (voiding warranty) your Nook Color in order to run this fix.  But since B&N's "fix" for this issue is to turn your device back on and off, their warranty doesn't appear to amount to a hill of beans anyway.

This issue has plagued Nook Color devices since their release and B&N has done nothing to address the issue.  The least they could do is add a recalibration utility so people didn't have to risk their warranty to make their device function properly.

                                                                    • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

My hands are not even close to the screen.  I have a leather case, and the cover folds under, so usually I'm craddling my nook while I read with two layers of leather underneath.  It still acts all wonky.  I can't say I'm pleased with this product by any means.  I may just resort back to my more than reliable iPad to read ebooks.

One month has passed and it is still acting crazy. I'll be reading then suddenly it flips forward to the end of the book and there's no "back button" to get me back to the spot in the book. Cleaning the screen has only helped for a short period of time, then it just Goes back to what it was - haywire. Thank you for the suggestions though.

Lots of folks have reported issues when charging and using the nook at the same time.

Some folks find a full power cycle helps - hold power ~20 seconds, ignore the "do you want to shut down?" dialog and the device powers on.  Hold power in around 5 seconds, the screen 'pulses' and the device starts up.

                                                                                • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

I am very frustrated right now. I received a Nook Simple Touch this past Tuesday as an early Christmas gift. We tried to log onto our WiFi connection with it, and the screen kept freaking out. It would flash strangely, and at one point, 3/4 of the screen went blank. This was straight out of the box. We decided that I must have gotten a lemon, and so I packed it back into the box to return it. My fiance said that I could pick out another reader if I wanted to, and after doing some research, I decided to upgrade to a Color Nook.

I bought the Color Nook online so I could get a refurbished one, and brought the Simple Touch back to my local store and got my money back. I was so excited when my Color Nook arrived in the mail!! I've done nothing but play with it ever since.

Well, it's not even been a week yet, and the thing is freakin' possessed. I have it sitting next to me, and as I am typing this post on my laptop, I am watching the screen just go bananas. Bullcrap that it's my touch setting it off, or my breath, or the temperature change, or smudged fingerprints (I read through this whole thread) because I am not touching it, I am not breathing on it, it hasn't gone outside since I received it in the mail and my house is set at the same temperature night and day, and I have cleaned the screen MULTIPLE times (I have glasses so I know how to clean screens).

I have rebooted it and it "fixes" the problem...for as long as an hour, but this last time, when I rebooted it, it literally started freaking out again as soon as the screen came on. I am not charging it when it happens - it just goes crazy and there's not a darn thing I can do about it.

I am frustrated, if you can't tell. My local B&N doesn't have refurbished units, so I don't know what'll happen tomorrow when I try to return this. I am WELL within the refund period, but because it's a refurbished item...

Also, I have it set to go to sleep after 15 minutes of non-use, and I haven't touched it for at least the last 30. But, it's just as awake as ever because it thinks I'm touching the screen. It's like the poltergiest over here - I told my fiance that it's my new entertainment, because I sure as h*ll can't read anything on it, I might as well watch the screen goes nuts.

I'll report back tomorrow on what my local B&N says - if they give me crap, I'm not going to be real nice about it though. They were great about taking back my Simple Touch, so here's hoping!

                                                                                  • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

I don't read while charging, I clean the screen all the time thinking the fingerprints are an issue, I power it on and off completely every night. I guess I'm just stuck with a very expensive but useless gadget.

                                                                                • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

Nook locked up on me tonight while I was using it.  It's fully charged, so not charging when it happened. Screen went blank, light blue, soft light reflecting on screen.  Can't turn it on or off.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

                                                                                  • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

My NC goes thru fits of not responding to touch commands at all, to scrolling, highlighting, and tabbing anything and everything, and I never even asked it to. I'm really disappointed with my NC and have put up with it for 2 years now. Unfortunately now that the Color is going by the wayside and the HDs are out, I dont expect much from B&N to solve it.

I thought I might give the NC to my 5yo for games and Netflix but even she gets tired of the lagging response, zero response and flipping out.

B&N needs to have a trade in or something for those of us who invested 250 to get this new fangled thingy thats really just kinda meh.

                                                                                      • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

My Nook Color didn't ike humidity. It was either going bananas or I was pounding on the screen and nothing was happening. How humid was it? I was in a meeting room with lots of bodies and it was summer. The AC was on too. Well, I knew there and then my Nook was another one of those Android POS. A week or two later the thing went and bricked itself. Now I'm doing what I should have done in the first place - bypassing the android garbage and going for an iPad.

                                                                                          • Re: Nook Color Touchscreen Freaking Out

I have a Nook Tablet actually, but they're basically the same I guess.  My NT started going berzerk about two weeks ago...freezing, turning pages randomly..all these crazy things.  Turn it off and back on it would work for 5 minutes then back to it's crazyness.  Tried all the remedies from these threads,  cleaned the screen, pushed all the buttons short of wiping the whole thing back to "like new"

Here's what worked for me (so far)..about an hour so far.  Knock on wood,  salt over the shoulder, horseshoes pointing the right way.  I've had this for a year and a half so no warantee issues. I took it apart..plenty of utubes on disassembling on the net..cleaned the screen real good under the front bezel with a little windex on a paper towel..there's like double back tape under the bezel..took that off. Then reassembled the thing.  A couple of the screws seemed to be loose when I took it apart, so I tried to torque all the screws the same putting it back together.

So..it's not as good as new.  I broke a couple of the little plastic tabs that snap the back cover on, but if it keeps working, I can live with it.

I really do like my Nook..I was ready to go out and buy a new one..and I still will I guess if this thing starts it's s**t again..So far so good
