New Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 NOOK on front page

    bobstro

SGT4N has gone live on the B&N pages. A few observations:

      1. The $179 price includes a time limited $20 discount.
      2. There's a $200 content bundle, but the 3 books and 3 apps are fixed, and the magazines available are limited.
      3. The HD/+ models are gone. Only the NGL and SGT4N show when you do a comparison.

At $199, it's a tougher sell. At least one can tout the B&N features. Do Wishlist and Read In Store work?

The content bundle does nothing for me. I might do a crossword puzzle. Too bad it's not just a gift certificate for B&N content. Samsung's perks bundle for the SGT4 is more compelling, at least to me.

Are the HD/+ models finally gone for good?

My impression is that it's "not bad"  for a reader, but not stunning. Best Buy and Samsung are currently running sales at about the same price. If I were shopping for a device, I'd try to buy it at B&N first, but would have no compunction about crossing the parking lot to Best Buy if B&N was out of stock.

I'm thinking about it. I do have an iPad 4, but I hate reading on it. I miss my NT, but I just couldn't keep it because of how closed off it was. I love the 7" screen and I enjoy reading on that. Plus, $199 (when discount is over) is better than $500 for an iPad Mini.

EDIT: I'd have to play around with it in-store before I will decide.

No (base model) iPad Mini has ever cost $500.  And previous year models cost much less (as low as $199 for the non-Retina Mini now).

Sounds like you'r comparing the current 32G Retina Mini against the 8G non-retina Samsung Nook.

I was making a sarcastic comparision, as I paid approximately $500 for a 32GB iPad 4. My apologies if this wasn't clear!

I have been thinking about getting an Android tablet, and this one looks pretty good.  My iPad has storage issues when I try to dump all my MP3 files onto it so the Micro-SD slot is a definite plus.  I'll have to think about this one and find some way to convince Mrs. Mac to let me get another toy.

One thing I'd recommend... my nook HD was not holding a charge very well and I read (perhaps on this forum) that changing the MicroSD card would fix it. I bought a 16GB Sandisk card and it works fine now.

I may get one for my wife... she loves her nook Color but it's really heavy.

Wha-what? You're not storing all your music in the iCloud? Have you been skipping your doses of iKoolAid?

Bobstro, the only reason I can see them refusing that request is risk of you trying to hack the NGT (apparently that's what Booksellers are calling it for now).  If you came to my store and asked me I'd probably say go for it since worse comes to worse we reset the Nook and ask you (hacker you not you you) to leave.

I think most of the Nook folks are eager right now to learn more about this new Nook.  So if you phrased it as something like "I heard the new Nooks can use a 64GB microsd card, but the specs only say 32GB is supported, would you mind if I test it?".

Though I'm not sure if the card slot is something we can get to on the demos, I didn't look for the slot when I was checking them out yesterday.

All that said I'll ask at work and see if anyone there knows for sure one way or another.

B&N hasn't announced that they will be selling the SGT5, just the SGT4, so, no, no confusion, there is only one Nook Galaxy Tab. (And as we all know, there can be only one.)

Actually, from the description of the software, I vote we all start calling it "the widget" ...

I'll be interested to hear how the Nook app on this device handles storing files.  If it gives the option to use the sdcard, when present, as a preferred target for BN downloads that's great.

Call me narrow-minded.  I like to read books and listen to music even when I'm somewhere without Wi-Fi.  How 20th-century of me.

Actually, you can still compare devices.  Scroll down to the bottom and click on the link for Nook Media Kit and it brings up all the devices.

I've found that I actually prefer the slightly larger screen of the HD+, so I'm a bit disappointed that it's apparently only available in 7" models at the moment. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if there's been any talk about about having a larger model like the HD+ available at some point in the future?

There's been talk of a SGT4N 10.1 inch, I believe due before the end of the year. The SGT4 10.1 inch has the same screen resolution as the SGT4 7.0 inch, so won't be as impressive as the HD+ spec-wise. I did examine one at a store, and it looks just fine.

Practicality of use wise, I wonder how that size would compare to the HD+.It sounds a bit large for my tastes. But then again, I didn't really think I'd wind up preferring the HD+ size over the 7" size, and yet I did. A 10.1 inch might wind up surprising me.

Of course, our HD+s are working just fine, and we really can't justify splurging on new devices of any kind right now. So it's a moot point for me at the moment. I'll keep enjoying my HD+. But it is an interesting thing to think about.

Can anyone else think of things BN can do to make this not just different from, but more valuable to its customers than, a stock Android device?  I can think of a couple:

1)The device only has 8 gig of internal storage, of which (probably) 5 gig are actually available for books and magazines.

I hope that BN has written the app for this device so that it can store books and magazines on that sdcard without rooting.  If they have done so, that makes the system more useful than a stock Android tab running the Nook app.

I have the Nook app for android using the sdcard by using a tool called "FolderMount" - but the tool requires root to run.

The New Yorker unpacks to ~200 meg an issue, so it's easily possible to eat 2 gig of storage in a few months with that one subscription.

                                          2)  It would also be nice if BN talked to Conde Nast about giving us a choice of font in article view - page view is a lost cause, for me at least, in terms of readability.  Article view is marginal today, so I'm glad that the device I'm on is rooted and running xposed.  That lets me install App Settings, which in turn lets me choose arbitrary font scalings within applications.

both of those mods are highly useful and really out of reach of most customers running stock Android.

Gee,this means I can ditch my HD+ in favor of a device with a smaller screen, less storage, and lower resolution. But it's got a camera so that the NSA can spy on me. Why am I not more enthusiastic?

Aside from the camera (if you consider it a plus), is there anything which gives the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook superiority over the Nook HD+?

I am not an app consumer, I love my HD/HD+ for reading, web browsing, and media (movies, music, youtube.)

Considering that they've got all of 26 reviews (as of this moment) and most of those are anonymous by people who don't own the device, many of whom are comparing it to the HD+, I don't think B&N need worry. A typical gem is "The rez is too low, it should have 16 GB of memory and should be 3G/4G enabled. Maybe then it can replace my Nook HD." That's a wish list, not a review.

If you read the reviews by actual device owners, they're generally 4-5 stars and very positive. The rest are reading a spec sheet and drawing conclusions.

I work at a B&N College store, and we got our demo device yesterday.  When wetried to register it, the User name that they told us to use wouldn't work, so I tried to use the user name that we had used for our Nook HD demo devices.  It seemed to work, but when we downloaded the software update, it didn't seem to have downloaded the ability to go into Demo Mode.  Of course, we later learned that there was a "known issue" regarding registration of the demo units.  And, of course, the step I took was the one thing they told us not to do.  SO this morning they have revised the instructions, but I need to erase and dereg. the demo unit.  And I looked everywhere I could think of in settings, but couldn't find that option.  Do you have any advise?

In terms of resetting, I don't have a Samsung device in front of me, but to start over you would:

Go into Settings / General / Accounts / Backup and reset.

It is also likely that the B&N account is also listed under the same Accounts section and you could simply remove it from there.

Unfortunately, it kept popping up a Samsung warning about not having a menu key. This was annoying and potentially could spook non-technical folks.

Still, someone should've at least set reasonable defaults that don't promote the competition! I didn't notice if the Kindle for Samsung app was present, but it didn't jump out at me.

On the back of the little 8 page product brochure, I see what's looks like a velour/fleece soft slip cover in several colors with the 'n' logo (which is nowhere else to be seen externally),  as well as some sort of kickstand case. The dude lying on the dock on the inside spread seems to be reading on a much larger device. Shades of new products (and rampant speculation) to come?

                                                              • Philosophy-wise: B&N is stepping away from the device and focusing on the apps that can run on any device. That's  a good idea considering how badly they fared with the HD/+ series. They're letting Samsung take on Amazon and the rest for the low-margin device sales, and focusing on the higher-margin media sales. I am truly hopeful that they intend to release the same apps (on the same codebase) to the GoPS so any device can be a full-powered NOOK. B&N tried to control our devices and failed. B&N seems to have recognized they need to make it easy for us to consume B&N content on the devices we control. Why does B&N care about the logo on a device unless it is stuffed with B&N content? B&N isn't so much where you go to buy your tablet as where you go to fill it with stuff to read (and watch).
                                                              • Market-wise: The only reason for selling the device in-store is so people who are wandering around the aisles will know that B&N has something, and those not technically adept, or shopping for somebody not technically adept can buy a color device and know they can get local, hands-on support. That's worth a lot. Considering the way American age demographics are leaning, that is probably a lot smarter than trying to be a high-profile, glitzy device shop. I've written elsewhere that I think their current strategy is to sell the Jitterbug phone of tablets.
                                                              • Device-wise: They're in the game without being in on the risk. Look how many covers are still in some of the shops for devices they no longer stock. No such risk with the Samsung. Lots of people make accessories, B&N can't get stuck so badly with unsold inventory.

This is all just my opinon, of course, and I may well be wrong. I'm honestly impressed with the little device, and I'm appreciating how this might be a smart move by B&N. I have no crystal ball to predict whether it will succeed, but it's a way to stay in the game without a lot of risk.

It has frozen twice and since there is no troubleshooting guide I had to try different things. I have a hd Nook which I like but was hoping the new Samsung would be better. I have a lot of books on a sd card, the books did not show their covers they all said text. So I loaded them on the tab4 and had them by author, what a mess some of the books were by author but most were by publisher, so if you want a tablet it would be ok but if you want it mainly for a e reader and have a lot of books on a sd card forget it.

Just tested it out on my iPhone using Linux and it showed my book, even automatically got the cover for it too. I think Calibre does is own thing differently though as I have also had no luck using their method on anything other than my Nook Color, and that searches and displays all file extensions within the Library. I think new applications scope it down and only show certain extensions that are not within directories.

If anyone has, let me know what folder you copied them to.   I have tried varoius folders and used Calibre to no avail.

I just tried this on a NGTS. Create a NOOK folder on your microSD card, and directly underneat that, a My Files (edit: with a space) folder. Put your sideloaded books in there.

Mine show up in the library app. Without covers. *sigh*

Picked mine up on Friday, overall happy enough with one exception. How do I shut off TTS in the Nook app, I'm pretty well versed in Android and apps in general and I cannot find any place to shut off this feature. Thanks in advance for any help.
