I can't watch youtube videos on Nook Color.  Any Suggestions?

I have tried using mobile version of youtube and it just says video cannot be played. I have seen that other people have said they are able to watch videos so Im not sure if I'm just not doing something correctly. I would appreciate any help.

NOOKcolor supports the mobile YouTube site (http://m.youtube.com), which runs on HTML.

YouTube mobile was meant for smaller mobile screens therefore the terrible video quality. With the expected update to the Android OS 2.2 in 2011, the NOOKcolor will support flash such as that displayed on the full site version of YouTube. Be patient, this is after all, an eReader, not a PC. More features to come...

I know some are making the argument that the NC is "just a reader" but really, it isn't. If I wanted "just a reader" I'd have spent 139 on a Kindle. The NC is a cross-over product between a reader and a pad PC, to some degree. It's focus is reader, but think of it more as a literature and art device if you will. The ability to read books, watch videos, listen to music (or perhaps an audio book or lecture) should all be a workable part of the experience. Otherwise, why pay the extra 100+ bucks for it? So you can view a few color diagrams in a PDF? I don't think so.

That all said, I think the Nook Color is right on target with where it is and where it's going. Great product. I think B&N called the market right by not trying to be just another Kindle. I like being able to read a book, listen to Pandora stations and, occasionally on whim, pop over and check my facebook wall. :smileyhappy:

So back to the video thing... I've tried the mobile Youtube as well and videos won't play at all, not even in low, scrungy resolution mode. It tries to load the video, then just pops back to the main screen, often without even an error message. I'm supposing the new Android coming in the next month or so with flash support will remedy that.

Did you go into the browser and click on settings and unchecked the popups? This is what we had to do..however the videos play but are bad quality. Not sure why or any fix for this?

Yes, I have pop-ups disabled. Still no video. Not even grungy ones off the mobile site. It just says "loading video..." for quite some time, then jumps back to the original screen. Or sometimes I get the error, "Cannot play vide; Sorry, this video cannot be played".

How odd.  On our Nook-color, "block pop-up windows" is checked, as are "enable javascript", and "enable plug-ins".  We went to "m.youtube.com/", in the search window entered "nookbn", selected "NOOKcolor Features & Touch Gestures", and it played fine (tho maybe lo-res).

Mobile youtube is viewable on my NC; watched a couple...not worth my time...worse than the early days of youtube.

IMHO, youtube on the NC is a lost cause until the rumored Flash update 2011Q1.

Steps to Check for Mobile App on Nook color:

                        1.  Open browser.

                        2.  In upper right corner there is an area that looks like lines, click on that.

                        3.  Go into "more options."

                        4.  Go into "settings."

                        5. Check "Browser Mode/User Agent".

If that is set to Desktop, use the drop-down menu and change to Mobile Browser Mode.

                        This may correct your problem.

I had to change mine back to desktop to get signed into one of my frequently used websites.

                        Hope this helps --

Try opening your browser, go into settings and turn pop ups off for your browser. To play videos for now until the flash update is pushed out you will need to go to m.youtbe or m.ksl.com.

I realize you want to make sure your Nook is not faulty. Is there anyway you can reset it to factory settings? Start over sort of? My wife's Nook (e-ink version) was giving her problems and we reinstalled or upgraded the firmware and it helped.

If it is any comfort you are not missing anything! I went to our B&N store today thinking I might pick up the Nook Color for our daughter. She loves watching kids stuff on youtube on my iPad but it is a little big for her hands (and I want it back!!). I was honestly surprised when I tried youtube on the store demo Nooks. Mobile Youtube gives you an ugly site obviously optimized for a much smaller phone screen. None of the tablet grid layout goodness you get with an iPad and much less intuitive for kids. The video quality is absolutely horrid - seriously the worst I have ever seen. You can hardly tell different clips apart as all you get is pixel artifacts dancing all over the screen. Totally useless even though I made sure the 'HQ' selection was on. This is not a problem with HTML. Android and iPhone phones both have excellent youtube quality in HTML. And the Nook must have the horsepower to display good quality video but for some reason it defaults to using the worst possible quality.

The rest of the Nook Color experience is pretty good for the price I think but I hope for your sake B&N will eventually update it with Android 3.0.

I had the same experience.  I would buy a Nook Color for my son, but not if the video is as horrible as the YouTube Mobile appears to be.

Really, B&N does themselves no favors showing their video capabilities so poorly.

Right now, I'm holding off until I get a better look at how the Nook Color does video.

If it will do full-resolution, full-screen video, I'll definitely get one.

OK this is sort of interesting...

I reported (above) that I cannot view mobile Youtube site videos regardless of settings on my NookColor.

Then perchance I tried it whilst connected wirelessly at a different location (not in my home) and it worked. It worked under various settings. Brought it back home, doesn't work, with any settings.

Hmm.... there's something about my wireless router configuration that is preventing the mobile Youtube videos from playing. I have no filtering turned on, and everything else (shopping, web browsing) all work at home, just not m.youtube.com or other similar internet videos.

Still investigating to try and figure out why...

Yeah, there have been instances of this (works everywhere but home), but I don't think anything definitive has been decided yet.

What brand/model router do you have?

I saw those reports, but my case is so specific to videos. Everything else regarding internet and wifi work fine.

I have a D-Link WBR-2310. Just for kicks I set my NookColor as a DMZ host, and then it worked. But that basically just bypasses the router function making it visible on the 'net directly. I'm not really wanting to keep that setup. Yikes.

Maybe if I can figure out this issue, it would help the other reported cases, too. Who knows...

Newest firmware?  D-Link's a decent router, for the most part.  Sure, I had two go flakey and now use a Cisco/Linksys WRT54GL, but still.  :smileywink:   Anyway,  D-link's not some off-brand that I'd expect to have issues with.  Curiouser and curiouser.

Yeah, I have the latest router firmer, and 1.0.1 firmware in the NookColor. The D-Link has been "veddy veddy good to me" outside of this particular issue (although it does sometimes do unexpected blocks if I switch on filtering by website - I've turned that off). On rare occasion I need to power cycle it... rarely. I had a Netgrear (forget which model) and it was not nearly as well behaved.

I'll stare at some of the config settings further and see if I come up with any ideas. If I knew more about what kind of packet/port transactions occurred when accessing a mobile Youtube video, I could more easily diagnose it. If I try to access a mobile youtube video from, say, my laptop, clicking simply does nothing. So there's something special going on there.

I have a Linksys Router and the m.youtube videos work ok. I thought I was having problems with certain videos hanging the player. Several times I had to turn off the NC in order to get it to play again. But......that was last week.

                                          • Re: I can't watch youtube videos on Nook Color.  Any Suggestions?

Nook Color can only play these video formats: 3GP, 3G2, MP4, M4V, and OGG. And supports MPEG-4 Simple Profile up to 854×480, H.263 up to 352×288, and H.264 Baseline profile up to 854×480. So if u want to enjoy video on Nook Color, u should convert video to Nook Color compatible formats.

I suggest u try Foxreal YouTube FLV Downloader Pro, which can not only download video from YouTube, but also convert downloaded video to Nook Color with the optimized format (MP4, 848×480, H.264 codec, 1500kbps avg bitrate, AAC 48KHz 160Kbps).

U can try it, good luck!

I get the same error trying to view videos through m.youtube.com on my nook.  The funny thing is, it will play about 10 seconds of the video and then error out saying "Sorry, cannot play video".  I am using a D-Link DIR-655 router.

Was anyone able to remedy this?

I had this problem as well. I would go to the mobile site and still couldn't watch the videos. Go into your settings on your NC and make sure it is in "Mobile" format and not "Desktop" this should solve your issue...it did mine at least. Good luck! :smileyhappy:

YAAAAY!!!! I figured it out, at least for my Nook. I just discoved that I have the same problem. Not beign able to watch the youtube videos. It NOT able whether it is youtube mobil or the regular one because I couldnt get either one. Anyway, the soulution that I found was

                                                  1. Push the N logo button

                                                  2. Tap on settings

                                                  3. In the "Device Settings" section tap "Screen"

                                                  4. Make sure the "Auto-rotate screen" box is checked

                                                  5. Go back and try playing the youtube video.

Note: If it doesnt work right away try going out of the browser and then go back in and retype the youtube address.

Hopefully this will work for you.

Also to be noted: For some reason I still could not play the Nook Color videos come with the Nook. But when I physically turned/held my Nook Color in the landscap position, the video started to play. So thats just one more thing to keep in mind.

                                                  Good Luck!

                                                  • Re: I can't watch youtube videos on Nook Color.  Any Suggestions?

Anyone looking to view their youtube videos without being online, or any other .wmv file can use the most updated version of realplayer and convert your .wmv file to a 3gp or mp3.  Realplayer is avaialble for all PC's & Laptops.  Once you have the program on your computer, use realplayer (video) to open and convert.  Once converted simply save it in your media file folder on your nook color (can transfer/copy files once you connect the USB to your computer).  Hope this helps someone other than me..:womanvery-happy:
