NOOK for Mac stopped working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

    LarryOnLI

      The subject says it all.

NOOK for Mac had been working flawlessly on my MacBook Pro running Lion (and before that Snow Leopard), but has stopped working following the upgrade to 10.8.

The Application window and splash screen appear, and then the app just hangs.

Has anybody else tried running this under 10.8?

I don't have a Mac but I noticed Apple posted the 10.8.1 update today. I have grave doubts that it will solve your problem...but it's worth a try.

Yep, same issue.  It must not be compatible...

            • Re: NOOK for Mac stopped working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

              Yes  - Same problem.

Deleting everything and re-installing also didnt solve the problem.

Mountain Lion was released in July 2012. It's now October, and still no word from B&N when NOOK for Mac will be updated for Mountain Lion.  I hope the delay is due to adding support for the Retina Display (The latest version of the Kindle App for Mac is getting downvoted to oblivion in the App Store due to no support for Retina displays).

In the meantime, a good workaround is to install the new Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 for Mac OS.  This version has support for B&N DRM, so it can open your Nook books. Look in the Documents/My Barnes & Noble eBooks directory for files ending in .epub, and open them with the Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 application. Enter your B&N Account Name and the credit card number you used to purchase the book when prompted.

Adobe's made significant improvements to ADE 2.0, it's now comparable or better than the Nook for Mac app or any of the other epub reader apps I've tried on my MacBook Pro (which isn't saying much, unfortunately).  At least you have something that will let you read your Nook books on Mountain Lion until Barnes and Noble get around to releasing an update.

                    • Re: NOOK for Mac stopped working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

As dfjacobs pointed out, Mountain Lion was released in July of 2012 and it's now October. He suggested that we install Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 for Mac. But after this long atime, I realize that his suggestion is only a temporary fix. This delay from B&N shows their disdain for their customers, so I decided today, that the next time I go into town, I'm going to stop by a store that sells Kindles and take a good long look at them.

I'll try Adobe Digital Editions. After all, I still have a lot of books on Nook and I'm not willing to trash them. But if this represents what B&N thinks of their customers, then I see no reason to dig myself further into a hole of proprietary format books for a reader that I can't use on my computer. I mean, this is ridiculous. Even Microsoft isn't this slow to fix their products and they set the standard for poor response to upgrade issues.

It's just frustrating. I was able to move all my old VHS to DVD, when I switched to DVD. I was then able to move all my old movies to BluRay, when I made that move. I was even able to move all of my old 8-tracks to cassette, when I made that move, back in the dark ages. But I can't move all my old Nook books to Kindle. I suppose that over time, I'll just re-purchase all those Nook books in Kindle format, a few at a time. Bummer. I really thought that B&N was better than this.

Another bump to keep this issue in front of B&N's eyes.

                        Dear Barnes & Noble,

The Website reading is not a good fix. That is only good if you have Wifi available all the time. Not an option for those of us who want to read in the car, park, or anywhere wifi isn't available.

I don't even see a Nook for Mac app in the App store anymore. You pull that?

Do you have any intention of upgrading/fixing the Nook for Mac app? Or other iOS device apps? They are very limited in function. Three fonts, Three or four background colors.

I did find a work around for Mountain Lion from another poster in another thread here (thanks) for accessing your Nook for Mac library. It worked great for a while.

Click the Mac app icon. Mine is on the desktop, not dock. Let it load. When you see the screen with the Nook icon, right click Back, then right click Forward.Click on your Books and wait very patitiently until your library loads.

I was able to do that until a few days ago. The library loads, but the newly purchased books don't show up now.

To get the newly purchased content to show up you need to perform a manual sync after you get your library to appear.

The button is in the lower left of the window.

Does not work on Snow Leapord either needs to be re-installed every time it is used.  I have both Nook and Kindle, the kindle app for mac works every time.

So, after making the switch to Mac OS 10.8, I can no longer use the Nook for Mac application.  Has there really been no response from B & N about this issue?  Has anyone had success in getting a reply from the company about this issue?  None of the workarounds really work for me.  It is very disappointing after being a loyal Nook owner and B & N customer.

                              • Re: NOOK for Mac stopped working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

                                 Greetings,

Same issue as mentioned below: OS Mountain Lion user who just spent about 45 minutes and chat and ultimately on the phone with Barnes & Noble support.  I was told (twice) they don't support OS Mountain Lion.  Are they crazy?  What does this say about the state of the of the company and its commitment to the millions of users out there who have Nooks and also live in the Apple ecosphere?  I like to read my digital content on my MB Pro and iMac.  Not supporting the Mac community says either:

                                1. Barnes & Noble doesn't care about Mac users (kind of a silly notion considering no retail sales organization wants to alienate an important market demographic.)

                                2.  Barnes & Noble doesn't have the financial resources to continue cross-platform development efforts and is economizing development on a prioritization matrix.  We've certainly heard the rumors about Barnes & Noble and their financial difficulty: is this yet another indication?

To anyone from Barnes & Noble corporate.  We really like your application applications and your value proposition.  But, how should the Mac user community feel about this absence of support for it?  Please tell me I'm wrong and that I've drawn the wrong conclusions.

I hate to admit it, but I'm thinking about Kindle.  I may curtail net new purchases in the Barnes & Noble ecosphere if they truly arn't committed to cross-platform support.

Not only is this a problem for me too, but I also cannot open the www.nook.com/mynook to use my Nook HD for transferring files. BN told me customer service people do not even know about this yet, and they are working on a glitch where you cannot install the Mac MYNOOK driver you need to transfer files between Nook HD and Mac. This info came from my local BN store rep. Each time you try to open the nook.com link from a Mac you get redirected to the BN homepage.

                                    Dear Barnes & Noble:

Apparently, you've left the Mac users like me to shout into the void.  This has been a problem for the better part of the year now, but no fix, no comment--nothing.

I just wanted to let you know that this is why you lost me as a customer. I've been a loyal one and have owned all three ereader versions, but no more.

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite 3G last week; out of the box, it's been a fantastic experience.  Everything syncs seamlessly across devices (even with certain Audible audiobooks), there are no silly restrictions on buying books while not physically in the United States, and the device itself is a pleasure to use.  I hate giving up on all the Nook books I've invested in, but if you're not going to offer technical support to what I can only imagine is a pretty large chunk of your user base, it's cut-my-losses time.

I understand that the company is in trouble and you're looking for places to save money.  Just remember that customer service is never the first place you should cut.

i just got an imac after my PC's hard drive crashed. i just went to download the Nook for Mac program and it says it does not support Mountain Lion... this just adds to my reason for believing in this: http://rika24.deviantart.com/art/eBooks-vs-Real-Books-365757642

i really hope that B&N fixes this problem as they are the only big bookstore that still exists out there now that my preferred one, Borders, is gone. This was my reason for going with Nook and not kindle, to support the existance of a physical bookstore that i can visit while also having a nice reader to carry instead of the larger books (which i still buy).

but i'm starting to think i should go back to Sony's ereaders after all. i already heard the rumor that B&N was going out of business, this only leads me to believe it's true.
