How to share books with friends.

I would like to be able to share books I have purchased from BN with my sister.  I read someone's posting indicating that you could do it through "social DRM " but it would entail giving out your credit card number.

How does the "social DRM" work?  I would not mind sharing my credit card number with my sister so that she could read the books I have purchased, but I don't know what we have to do.    When answering please keep in mind that we are two octogenarians, so we need specific instructions.

Do you see your sister often?  If so, that will make it much easier (and more secure) for you.

I don't know what an octogenarian is, but I'll do my best to be as clear and detailed as possible.  I know it looks like a lot of steps, but it is really very easy.  These instructions are for computers running Windows.

          1. Download the NOOK for PC app to your computer from B&N's website, if you have not done so already (this is because downloading ebooks thruogh the NOOK for PC app will give you file names that contain part of the ebook titles instead of only the ISBN numbers that you will nt be able to identify).
          2. After you install it, open it, register your account to it and sync the library.  Download the books you want to share with your sister.
          3. Have your sister bring her NOOK with her the next time you see her (and her USB cable if she has a different model).
          4. Connect your sister's NOOK to your computer through the USB cable.
          5. Open your Documents on your computer.
          6. Double click on the folder named, "My Barnes & Noble ebooks."
          7. Double click on the folder that uses your email address for its name.
          8. Scroll Highlight all of the ebooks you want to move to your sister's NOOK.  If it is all of them, just hold down Ctrl and press A.  if it is only some of them, you can select more than one at a time by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the various ebooks you want to highlight.
          9. Once you're done selecting ebooks, hold down the Ctrl key and press C.
          10. Open Computer or My Computer, depending on which version of Windows you are running.
          11. Double click on the NOOK drive that appears.
          12. If your sister has the first edition e-ink NOOK (the model with a reading screen and separate small touch screen), double click on My Documents and then either hold down the Ctrl key and press V or right click anywhere in the window and select Paste.  If your sister has a NOOK Color or the newest e-ink NOOK, double click on My Files and then double click on Books.  Once you do that, either hold down the Ctrl key and press V or right click anywhere in the window and select Paste.
          13. Once you have pasted the books into your sister's NOOK, go back in Windows Explorer until you return to the top level, Computer or My Computer (you will see all of your drives listed--C:, D:, and/or whichever others you have on your computer).
          14. Right click on the NOOK drive and select Eject.  If there is an SD card in the NOOK, there will be another drive probably named Removable Disk (some letter:smileyhappy:.  Right click on that and select Eject.  If there is no SD card you only have to eject the NOOK drive.
          15. Disconnect your sister's NOOK from your computer.
          16. Open the library on your sister's NOOK.  If your sister has the first edition e-ink NOOK (the model with a reading screen and separate small touch screen), tap on My Documents on the bottom touch screen.   If your sister has a NOOK Color, tap on My Files on the top nav bar in the library and then tap My Files and then tap Books.  If your sister has the newest e-ink NOOK, open the library, tap the drop down menu on the top left, and select My Files.  Then Tap My Files again and then tap Books.
          17. Open one of the ebooks you transferred.  You will be prompted to enter your name and the credit card information.  This is the default credit card on your account, no matter what you used to purchase the ebook.  Once you do that, the book will open  You should only have to enter this information once.  to test this, go back to the library and open another book you transferred.  It should open without a problem.

          I hope this helps!

I tried the above instructions.  I was able to load the eBook onto my new Nook.  When the promp came up asking for full name on credit card and credit card company, it would not accept the information and the window would pop up again.

I tried calling tech support, and tried going to a barnes and noble store and they were very little help, stating that this method does not work....

                help if you can!!!!

Right now I would not recommend NOOKS to anyone!!

Use the name as registered in your B&N account. Leave out any middle initials. This really works.

After downloading a book from a friend's nook, it requires me to input my name and credit card which I have tried to do but it still does not unlock my eBook. Can you tell me what I need to do to get this to work? Thank you.

once you are setup you can email each other B&N book files.

Actually the described method can also be used to clear up internal memory on your Nook devices. Just load Nook for PC, archive your books, then sideload them back in to the SD card. I have found this works well. Thanks everyone!

This works well, follow step by step. I was trying to share a couple of books with my wife and everything transferred as it should, but I couldn't get them to unlock. Someone here said to use ONLY your first and last names. LEAVE OUT YOUR MIDDLE INITIAL, even though it is on your credit card. That's what worked for me. You have to leave out the initial. Happiness follows.

Look into Sugarsync.com for file sharing which can include ebook in epub format. It also helps if you use Adobe Ditigal Editions. I am willing to share ebooks this way.
