    Anyone else disappointed?

I waited a long time for this update. I played around with a bootable nookie froyo card and saw possibilities. I even was at BN this morning at 9 and asked them to install the update for me, which they did. After seeing first hand what they gave I am a bit disappointed. 2.99 for a free game is a bit much. 139 apps to start with and only 15 free is also a bit disappointing after reading what amazon gave their customers to start with. I know that there are people that are happy with whatever crumbs BN throws at them and I know I will get flamed by fanboys. Im sure a lot of folks feel like me. I did not have high expectations and still was disappointed. I will now think seriously of a full time root.

I agree. I have been reading about the NC becoming a "full tablet" for a while now. At best it is a locked tablet. I can't even install third party apps! Why would I pay for Angry birds when I already have l three games on my Android phone? Amazon is coming out with an Android tablet later this year with access to their own app store. B&N needs to meet the market for this device before it comes out or they'll lose everyone.

all i really wanted was a comic reader app

I'm pretty dissapointed with the update. Mainly by it's lack of some form of comic book/graphic novel reader.

Even if you maintain the view that the Nook Colour is an "E-Reader First" - It's a colour e-reader. There is really no other reason to purchase it over the nook standard or the Kindle if all you wanted to do was read books only, as both of those options provide a superior environment for pure book-reading. For me, it was the ability to eventually read comics or graphic novels that sold me on it. I didn't bother rooting it because I figured I'd eventually get to that point, and I had enough books to keep me busy.

With this update however, I'm rethinking things. A rooted nook easily offers access to pretty much every comic/graphic novel ever made through the use of .cbr file support, and the "Official" update provides nothing. Not to mention all the other superior apps you get through rooting. I really have no problem with paying for an app that provides this, but the lack of an option to read about the only viable colour media format aside from magazines - Just shows a lack of caring, or even outright refusal to offer an app for this. (As apps exist for this on various Android app stores)

So yeah, put me in the dissapointed category. As far as the cost of various other offered apps, that don't bother me. Although charging .99 cents for a calculator did make me LOL.. :smileyhappy:

but B&N never said anything about the NC becoming a "full tablet". it's always been "readers tablet" with apps concentrating on the readers experience no more, no less

I'm not too pleased about the decrease in performance, especially in the playback of ,mp4 movies which played beautifully before the update to 1.2 as well as the continued lack of any rudimentary built in file management. I would have liked the ability to create and maintain multiple picture folders without all being shown together in the Gallery and also a "download to/save to" option for downloads and image saves. At the risk of being overly demanding it would be nice to also have the ability to delete files without connecting to PC.

you can delete files that are in your library by simply switching the browser back to desktop mode, and then logging into your Barnes and Noble account.

I am aware of this ( I did RTFM, as well as these boards for the past 4 months ) and also that I can delete downloads while they are still in the download folder. If these were the only files I wanted to manage that would be fine, but this is not the case. Thank you for the input as others may not have known.

Well, I got the Angry Birds, it is a fun game but it raises havoc with my books. After playing the game and then wanting to read a book, my books all open up as nice black screens, no words, just black screens. I have to say nice black screen because they are the kind of black the night mode should be, no text and no bottom quick access bar to backswipe or get out of the black screen. I have to reboot to get the books back.

There is also a huge drop in battery power. I keep wi-fi off unless I need it. In just using the to-do list this morning, it dropped 5% in about 10 minutes. Zowee, I get better power management than that running my laptop on battery power only without a power saving scheme turned on.

Seems like this is going to drop the already paltry "up to 8 hours" with all the minimalist tactics set, to around "up to 2 hours" tops, maybe less. So I'm disappointed in the battery drain.

The new app store on the NC is more limited than what the Android Market offers, correct? Does rooting the NC have any limitations?

Using the autonooter method which supports only 1.1.0 for the moment. And should be upgraded in the next weel or two for 1.2.0 firmware.

And Nope as you will still have full access to your B&N menus and functions. It just modifies it to be more open to adding apps and alternate browsers, reader apps and the like.

The other method entails using an SD card to store the android OS image. When inserted and boot up will boot to the modified Android OS. Turn off remove SD card and turn on and boots up to original unmodified B&N OS.

It's an Ereader.  IT'S AN EREADER!  Buy a tablet if you want a tablet and pay the tablet price.  Get real.  These ereader tablet prices are subsidized and they are platforms to support the ebooks that these vendors are selling.  they are not in the tablet business.  They are in the ereader business, to support THEIR products.  It's called BUSINESS.  Make money selling YOUR  products, not the competition's .  Wake up already.

I'm quite happy so far!  It will take awhile for more apps to be developed and released, and why in the world would people expect lots of them to be free?  How do you expect anyone to make money??

I love the email client, I think the overall device performance has improved, they've added a "back" arrow for apps, but I still can't get videos on the internet to play, so not sure what the flash support actually does.

All in all, I'm very happy! I've already got most of the things that I've been missing on the NK:

                                  1) A searchable PDF viewer (downloaded ezPDF Reader for $.99)

                                  2) A notepad app (downloaded Fliq Notes for free)

                                  3) A decent email client

Plus a couple of things that weren't on the list, but are cool.

The only thing I still want is a calendar app that will sync with google calendar.

But, relax people! It's only the first day! How many apps did you expect there to be on the first day?

                                  • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

I lurk mostly on these boards, but I must come out of lurk mode just to say, some folks will complain about anything. You bought a e-reader, they gave it a bit of an update where one can get some apps should they deisre. Some cost, some are free, welcome to the real world. Still it's not enough that they even updated a e-reader for a better online experience. Go spend $500 or more and get a tablet... maybe then you'd be happy....

My BIG disappointment is that you still can't share passages from sideloaded books!  But, at least you can put sideloaded books on the home screen and it does seem they've improved the reading/shelves somewhat.

Flash is great, I'm glad for a free Goodread apps!

I really wish people would just stop trying to use this reasoning like all you bought was an ereader. Ever since I saw nookcolor it was advertised as a ereader tablet. By people saying "you just bought an ereader" is only seeing the cup 1/4 way full.

I feel since the update the NC is running better and truth be told I never owned an android tablet of any kind. I just hope the fix the visual bugs I seem to have after the patch ( IE missing mag images and apps icons.)

Some people could also have cracks in their cup. I did purchase the NookColor with the express purpose of purchasing an ereader.  Maybe I'm the Bizarro World excepcion of it all, but that's the case w/me. I like that there is a free note taking app & calendar app. I've enjoyed the music player, Pandora, & the other apps from prior NC OS versions, but I consider these things "extras" as their prior button was labled. But really all I have to say about the update is: finally, moar CAT IN THE HAT BOOKS y'all!

And I don't need duplicates of all my apps that are on my phone. But, I am extremely happy that I can email on the nook now and view videos - so much larger screen. Why didn't B&N also charge us for the update?

I have an android phone.  I did not expect the nook update to do everything my smartphone does.  I am thrilled because the things it does do allow me to do more than I could before.  I think the people who are thrilled knew when they bought the nook that the price they paid would never be enough to buy a tablet and decided that what they wanted was an e-reader that might have some useful tablet functions.  Having made that decision they did not have unrealistic expectations.

Theoretically, they can roll new ones out at any time.  And apps can be released continuously... they don't need to wait for either a major or minor update.  I think this is a really good thing.  Obviously, this depends on them having new apps from devs to add.

You could offer it completely for free, if you wanted to.  And no, B&N wouldn't charge the downloader.

i am disappointed.  I just recently bought my nookcolor because I was told by the BN associate that the android apps would soon be added to the software.  At the time, I was choosing between the $250 nookcolor or the $500 samsung galaxy tab at verizon.  I chose the nookcolor because of the cheaper price and the free wifi (the tab would have been another $20 a month).  I also had just downgraded my smart phone to a text/talk only phone to save $ on the data plan.  So, I was excited for this update.  But, the choices given- are crap!  There's not even a Words with Friends.. and it seems that 100 out of the 139 apps available are geared towards children!!  Well, seriously.. I am considering giving my nook to my mother in law- who would use it strictly as an e-reader and not care for the apps.. and get myself the galaxy tab with all the android apps I want.. which is now just $199 at verizon.  Sorry, BN, but that's your competition now and you FAILED!

Being an Angry Bird addict, I'm glad to have it here but was a bit suprised to have to pay for it.  And I was hoping for Seasons and Rio too, but I dont see them in the App store.  I like not having the ads on Angry Birds tho.

I purchased the Nook as an ereader and it definitely suits all of my purposes for that.  I hate the kindle and the ipad is too heavy and too expensive.  To have some of these extras on the Nook  Color is a nice bonus - without having to pay a ton of money for apps I will never use, and only pay for the ones I want.  I can live with that.

Yesterday my husband received a free Dell Streak tablet - thats a beautiful little device and with full access to the android market.  It goes for $500, tho.  If it wasn't free, he wouldn't have it.  :smileytongue:

He said if he hadn't received the Streak for free, he'd be off to buy the NookColor tonite.

I believe in time the NookColor will have a lot more apps.  We live in a world where we all want instant gratification with everything we want, so patience is not something that everyone is used to anymore when it comes to gadgets.

So long story short, after a few weeks of reading up, I used autonooter and I ended up with a completely different device; amazing. :smileysurprised: Fast, intuitive, tons of free apps, and plenty for my kids- especially educational, and still the same e-reader stock with a touch of a button. I cannot wait to see the capabilities when an autonooter is developed for NC 1.2 with froyo.

                                                                          1.  Native email app, works fine with gmail.

                                                                          2.  Google docs now works fine on the NC.  Previously, you could not display the keyboard, but now it seems quite seamless.

                                                                          3.  Fliq notes app, free.  More than any other app, I was hoping for a free note taking app.  Haven't really tried it out in detail, but at least now I can take notes fairly quickly, and manage them.  I'd love to see an enhanced note app, more of a basic word processor, actually, but for now, this fits the bill.

                                                                          4.  low-res flash seems to work.  Could be better, but at least now most websites will work reasonably well where flash is required, and I feel more comfortable using the web browser generally.

                                                                          Misses:

                                                                          1.  Too few apps, too many at high cost.  Some of the apps I've gotten for free on my G2 android phone that I use include a telnet client, tools for calculating IP addresses and subnet masks, ping and other network related apps, a guitar tuner, and currency exchange app.

                                                                          2.  Sound on flash videos is pretty low through the built in speaker.

Outside of that, it's at least a start, and I have hopes for B&N working with more developers who already have android apps that primarily need to be ported to the new screen size.  But my initial needs have been met, and I look foward to more as time goes on.

                                                                            • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

Some that are in not-quite HD look as if they are HD... The virtual keyboard doesn't seem so oversensitive tonight. Is that just my imagination? I'm not getting so many double letters nor is it typing when I merely hover over it. My one regret is that books cannot be turned to Landscape, a basic reading thing they should have done for a still-relatively smaller screen. (I couldn't care less about animating a page turn!) and pictures still cannot be zoomed.

The update doesn't disappoint me necessarily, but I can see where people are disappointed.  IMNSHO, I think these things:

                                                                                1.  Angry Birds for 2.99 is more than it is on any other "android" stores.  Is it because B&N is charging a higher rate?  Is it because it's the HD version?  I don't know, and frankly don't care - it's a great app, and 2.99 is not too much to spend.  Think of it this way - you spend 60.00 for an xbox360 game, 50 for many first rate PC games, and 19.99 is a "bargain" price for most PC/Video systems.

                                                                                2.  I am a little confused why they haven't gotten a good CBR (Comic Book format) reader on this thing yet.  First they could open up the bookstore to sell CBR files, and people could sideload their collections.  The screen is *perfect* for comic readers, and I myself know a few comic people that would buy this thing if it did the cbr files.  Comixology has an app that works on android that most people really dig, but I don't know if it allows for sideloaded content.

                                                                                3.  Being as it's "about books" and books are usually "about words"... I'm surprised Words With Friends didn't make the app store...

That's about it.  Other than that - this thing is awesome for reading books, and the little apps - they are nice, but I own the NC to read my Grisham, Lescroart, Baldacci, etc... :smileyhappy:

                                                                                • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

No, I am not disappointed at all. The install was perfect  and everything came up as expected.

I took a quick glance at the app store but didn't find anything of interest (Sorry, no interest in Angry Birds either lol)

The unit seems more responsive and overall seems like a good stable release. Hopefully there is some improvement in the overall battery life.

I can understand some of the complaints about a lack of functionality, the cost of apps and the problems some had when upgrading. For me, it's a solid device that does exactly what I bought it for which is reading and light web browsing.

                                                                                  • Re: Anyone else disappointed?
I'm disapointed in the free apps junk. Some programs that are free still need a CC and a download and these are already on laptops and handhelds. Buying a "free" app ask for a credit card# , I use paypal. I don't care if its for DRM reasons. A credit card IS not a I.D. if a small service fee is charged is nor FREE. Don't start with the "Its like a shipping fee you pay if you order something by mail." Its not tangible, its a electronic signal! There is no shipping weight! I pay for internet access so I have already paid the delivery service. Its a little weird going into a news site and seeing movement flash is nice so long as they don't fill the page with moving advertising and slow up the site causing one to change the user agent to mobile.
                                                                                    • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

Yep!  Very disappointed but probably for a different reason than most.

Back in November I purchased a Nook Color because of their Nook App Developer program.  I develop software for a living and thought this would be a great opportunity.  So, I signed up (as did MANY other developers) just to find out it was a ploy.  There are literally thousands of developers out here, wanting to create innovative apps for the Nook and B&N will not allow us.  Why?  We still don't know.  We've heard repeatedly for the last 6 months that we will "soon" be able to contribute to the Nook app store yet here we are.  The Nook "store" is open with a mere 139 apps.  I, personally, would be happy to create a FREE calculator program.  However, B&N has yet to truly open up development to everyone.  So, will more apps be coming?  Yes!  Will Nook users have the same choices as someone with just about any other Android device?  No!  Was this done on purpose by B&N?  Maybe.

With that said, I do love my Nook Color and even without the Nook store I would be very happy with my purchase.  I have to say though, of the apps that were released today, none seemed to interest me enough to part with my money.  :smileysad:  Too bad.

                                                                                      • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

I can't believe that with all the emphasis on making this a great reader, they managed to miss 2 major fixes with this update.

                                                                                        1. Dark mode!! The background is still gray...not very good for reading in the dark because of lower contrast than white on black. How can the reader apps on my smartphone have a better night mode than this $250 e-reader? Make the background BLACK please B&N, how hard can it be?

                                                                                        2. Still can't read books in landscape mode. This is a major flaw because you can't read outside wearing polarized sunglasses in portrait mode, but by rotating to landscape mode you would be able to see the screen clearly. So, I guess B&N is encouraging us not to go outside and/or to wear sunglasses that aren't as good for our eyes...what a shame.

These were two very simple fixes that need to be made and I can't imagine how they were missed. I really hope they fix these things in the next update, or I think I'm out.

                                                                                        • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

I am very HAPPY about this update. NookColor has been a great eReader and now it is a very versatile tablet that would server the needs of many users. At the same time, people would want everything Android does can still dual boot CM7 Gingerbread or even HC on the external SD card. Best of both worlds.

If people complaint why is the B&N Market is locked, one can ask similar question to why is Apple AppStore locked.

                                                                                          • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

                                                                                              • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

Well, I just finished loading and checking out the new update. My only wishlist items were 1) a page turning animation because there were problems with several pages turning at once, and 2) a button or other feature that would allow easy adding of side-loaded books to the home page. Well, I got mostly what I wanted. The pages now slide left and right and you can put side-loaded books on the home page, although you have to open each book first. This for me is an enhancement of the reading experience, which is nice.

I cannot use any apps other than what is pre-loaded because I do not have a credit card build into my BN account. Will that change? I don't know.

It's unfortunate some are disappointed. For me there are 3 options:

Just like here, apps on my smarttv are sometimes free but most of them are a couple of dollars.

You have a cursor now so when you are typing you can go back and make corrections, the notepad app is free, email is great.

I bought an ereader that had color capabilities (magazines) AND would let me checkout books for free from my public library. Now I have an ereader with the capabilities that I want AND I can dabble in the Android realm if not fully explore when I want. Satisfied - a resounding YES!

I got my notes, calendar, tasks, i agree with others, there are things i expect to pay for, but not a basic calculator. That threw me off. It says its a basic calculator. Other than that, i happy, plus too many apps running and bogging down the system can drain battery life, like apps on my phone that i cant delete. I bought this to read books, and now they have added everything i really would use. I must admit, i dont watch movies on my nookcolor, i dont have a bunch of pictures stored, i convert my pdfs using calibre (love it), which i dont have many, only about two. :-) so I'm not in the league of others who are maxing out the functionality. Im happy to be able to take notes, create tasks, quickly look at a calendar, and mostly read my books. Now this may be silly, but a zip code, area code program would be nice. I want to check out the conversion tool, but dont want to pay to find out it isnt as good as others I've used. Do they have a try before you buy option?

In the scheme of things it's minor), my only gripe is the failure of BN to add the landscape mode for reading books.

I will then either uninstall the update and root my NC, or if an updated root comes out take it from there.

I bought my nc for reading not knowing that it would get this update.  So this is just an added bonus.  I am used to buying iphone apps so paying for them is no big deal.

I am overall happy with the update.  I know more apps will be coming so no big deal for me.  If I really need an app I get it on my iphone.

I get a kick out of reading all of the complaints on this board.  There are some people in this world who are never happy.  I am just blessed to be able to have my nook color.

I'm definitely disappointed. Videos that used to play beautifully smooth on the NookColor now stutter with dropped frames.

I'm all for updates that broaden -- and enhance --  the user experience. And I'm all for updates that improve performance.

But no update should ever cause you to LOSE something you've come to appreciate. The silky smooth video playback of the NookColor appears to be gone. In its place we now have stuttering and jerkiness.

I don't see how you would choose to lessen part of the unit's performance as a trade off to add a bunch of new features.

B&N -- can you please address this?

                                                                                                                      • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

Yes, I am disappointed too. Even though I bought the Nook as a reader. It was not because of the Apps but why BN need to charge for those Apps that are free every where else? I understand BN need to control and protect the hardware and products and also the apps store, but they should just provide a place where we can install some other apps like the weather or my local radio station app, etc.  I am hoping BN will have more apps in their store soon.

                                                                                                                        • Re: Anyone else disappointed?

They did a pretty good job however I am disappointed that all the bugs were not fixed before they rolled out the update. When I bought my NC 2 months ago I bought it for an e-reader. The tabet capabilities are just a plus for me. The contacts app is whats frustrating me. My contacts disappear and reappear. Now it says I have no friends however in the update tab it tells me my friends updates. Weird! Aside from that I think it was a good effort.
