Has anyone ever bought a book from Smashwords? Or a smashwords book available on B&N? I was curious about quality since anyone can epublish through them. How's the editing? Content? Reading level? Just curious.
I've downloaded a number of free books from Smashwords. Somewhere around 70 or so.
I go directly to Smashwords, rather than through B&N. You can read the beginning of anything that's published there, right online. You can also see if anyone's reviewed the book on Smashwords. There also could be reviews on B&N.
My experience has been that the quality level of the writing is surprisingly high. Of course there is some junk, but a quick look at the preview will usually help sort that out.
The quality level of the editing varies quite a bit.
Of the stuff I've read and rated there, I've given out
- 1-star (bad stuff) : 1
- 2-stars (didn't like it) : 4
- 3-stars (okay, not special but hey it was free) : 9
- 4-stars (very good) : 9
- 5-stars (outstanding) : 6
I've also been unable to rate one novelette that I got free that are no longer free (for non-free stuff you have to have bought it to rate it). I'd have given that one 5 stars, too.
So out of 30 novels and short stories I've read, half got a rating of 4 or 5 stars, and over 80% got 3 stars or better from me.
I have downloaded several books from smashwords. the only problem i found was that some of the books are very very very short! (i know now to check the file size!) Some as small as 4 or 5 pages!! Thank god I did not pay for those!!
I did notice that once in a while... the print becomes darker (or bold) or that the actual font changed size. But that wasnt a real problem to me.
I got a free ebook from Smashwords over the summer. I loved it so much that I went back and bought a couple more by the same author. The first book is no longer free, but it's all very well written and better romance than I usually read. This was the first one; haven't read the others yet so I can't tell you about them, but I really like this one!
