    Three problems with new NC

I just bought my NC yesterday and have had three problems.

      1) my downloaded free books from the B&N website disappeared. The only way to retrieve them was to reboot the NC, then go back to B&N and re-download all 7 books. Why would they disappear?

      2) when playing the tutorial video, the sound cut in and out. Could it be a bad speaker, or is the video not functioning well?

      3) When I'm in an ebook and click on the bar with the Text option, I do NOT have a button to click to change background screen color OR font color. I only have text size, font type, plus buttons to change line spacing and how much text fills the page. ALSO, when clicking to change line spacing from single space to 1 and 1/2 spacing, it reverts to single spacing and will not allow me to change it.

What's up? I'm thinking I may have a defective unit and will need to exchange it. OR, if this is how Nook Color works, I may return it and search for another e-reader!

You have 14 days to return it for a complete refund.

I first obtained the NC in December and it worked beautifully up until this week's update.  This update has caused numerous problems, and it totally cooked my original NC.  It worked fine prior to update, became completely disfunctional after the update.  I now have a REFURBISHED replacement.  Not a new one, a refurbished one, or what BN calls a "new-pre-owned Nook Color".

Given the update and all the problems it has caused, and given an uncertain future not only for the Nook Color's functionality as a half-baked tablet, but BN's own solvency (read the reports...), and given that Amazon is supposedly coming out with an inexpensive tablet this summer (speculation at this point, but those in the know are fairly certain it will happen, in a couple of months!!), if I were you, I'd return it.  If you don't need one right now ... if you're not committed to owning a lot of BN-eBooks, like I was since I'd purchased the original Nook (the b&w one), then in my opinion, I wouldn't want to risk having a device that won't work well, one that I won't be happy with for at least a few years.

It's a gamble. BN might fix things... they might not.  Who knows?  BN isn't talking.

Your concern with a "refurbished" NC sounds like sour grapes on YOUR part to me.

Tell me, what manufacturer of an electronic device gives you a BRAND NEW UNUSED as a replacement for defective device once you get beyond the original possibly being DOA?

Seriously?    IF you take your car in for warranty work, you don't get a new car, you get a car back that has been "refurbished"     If you want to wait for B&N to take your exact NC, and send it to a repair facility and fix it, then send it back to you....would you be happy?

Replacing with "refurbished" is 100% standard industry practice.   It gets you a replacement almost immediately and the manufacturer doesn't have to have a customer service repair facility nearby.   The unit you turn in, is in turn, fixed...re-certified and then it too becomes a "refurbished" unit.   All in one central location.

Get off your high horse, learn how the real world works.

As to the new cheapie Kindle...if that's your choice, go for it.   Understand it will be ad supported, but if you don't mind seeing ads .... do it.

First of all ignore the previous post. No that is not how the NC works, Mine works great both before and after the update. If you just got it yesterday and have problems why don't you go back to the store and ask them to take a look at it? Did they help you set it up?

font color is on the same menu as font, font size and right next to where you are trying to select the spacing - . Make sure you don't have publisher default selected.

As for your free preloaded books, I have no idea unless you removed them from the home screen. If it hasn't happened again maybe it was just a setup issue.

I've never watched the video so I can't help you with that.

Pressed every button in the text window with and without publisher default on.

                  The font color never changed.

Just to clarify what others have said so well.  The things spoken of do indicate something is not working right with the OP's NOOKcolor.  It can be exchanged for a new one since the OP just got it.  Older NCs that are under warranty may be exchanged for refurbs based upon what BN has available.  This is standard in the industry.  Apple and Amazon both do this.

My family has 4 NCs, 2 are in my same household, and they have been working great all along.  When I first got a NOOKcolor in November, it had a defective connector.  I called, talked to support, and got it exchanged promptly.  Since then the one I have has been great.  The update is fantastic for the apps and all, but I consider the NC to be a great value for what it has done all along.

But, defective ones do happen.  Every device manufacturer has the same issue.  And they deal with them in much the same way.

People with problems tend to come onto support boards looking for answers, so it can seem like problems are widespread, but considering the vast number of users out there, the number of problems is actually small.

If something happens when installing the update, it could be user error.  Some people do not read the directions and so don't eject properly.  But, it could be that the device was defective or the user had done something prior to the update which interfered with the update.   If a unit is defective, return it.

Since you just bought it yesterday it can still be exchanged at the store if it is not functioning properly.

Do not be fooled by the forum obviously people with problems come here to ask for help, so the amount of trouble you read about is not representative of the nook color.

I have had none of the problems listed before or since the update. When I mention any of the issues I read about here to nook users who do not read the boards, well they look at me as if I am nuts.  You might have an issue with yours but they will replace right in the store within the first 14 days..Welcome to nook, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
