Apps you would like to see on the Nook Tablet

Post here apps you would like to see on the Nook Tablet! I'll start with: Dropbox (get the nook color version up and running on the Tablet!), Overdrive Media Console, Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile, Mint.com, Wordpress, Google Translate, Google maps (although why really if you have a phone and this is a wifi only device?), IMDB, Shazam, WebMD, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Skype (make use of the voice at least, we have a microphone after all), Slacker Radio, TED, Plants vs. Zombies, Cut the Rope, Yelp, Bloomberg...
        • Re: Apps you would like to see on the Nook Tablet

          Quizard, or any flashcard app!

          • Re: Apps you would like to see on the Nook Tablet

I'd love to see Slacker Radio, Cut the Rope, Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, a decent weather app, a decent calculator, a photo viewer based on Dropbox or some other cloud storage service, and the FREE versions of my favorite apps: Angry Birds, TuneIn Radio, etc. Not sure why BN has the paid versions of so many apps and not the free versions.

Lack of apps is my one big complaint with the Nook Tablet! It's a great reader, but lack of apps makes it pretty useless as a general-purpose tablet. Crossing my fingers that will change in the near future...

Perhaps it's because the "free" versions of those apps on other platforms have ads, which are unavailable for monetization to developers on the Nook platform?  Just a wild guess.

Bookworm and Words with friends!  all my scrabble buddies are on facebook and the facebook Words with friends does not  like the Nook browser....don't wish to purchase  the scrabble game offered in the app store as I would have to start my friends list again.  It's a simple and free game.  unsure why it is such a problem for Barnes and Noble.  I know a lot of people have requested it.

The entire Android Market. It is a foolish, indeed a doomed strategy for Barnes & Noble to limit the applications available on the NT. Right now, I use my tablet only as an e-reader. For everything else I use my smart phone, mostly because what I can do for free on my phone I have to purchase on the NT. I can guarantee that it'll take some real convincing for me to buying another Barnes & Nobel product in the future. And I tell people who are on the bubble the by a Kindle Fire instead because they can access all those free apps that I can only wish for on lists like this.

But to answer the question directly:

A FREE scientific calculator ( .99? Really? My phone is free.)

A FREE stop watch/timer/alarm clock ( 1.00? Really? My phone is free.)

A measurements coversion tool (I have access to a dozen free ones on my phone.)

                      Stitcher (free on my phone)

Slacker Radio (far superior to Pandora -- and free as well)

Dropbox (free on my phone of course)

                      Cozi (yes, free)

I don't disagree with you that it would benefit Nook owners to have such access.  However, B&N has made it extremely clear that they have no intention of doing so, so the point is moot.

Yes.  If you're too cheap to pay a buck for the handful of apps you want, you should definitely go elsewhere.  The Nooks don't have nearly as many "free" apps as other platforms.

So, I may be going out on a limb here, but I guess you'd like all your software for free?  :smileywink:  Of course, I'm sure that none of that free software on your phone has advertisements.

(Has no one noticed the correlation in many areas, like TV, where when you watch shows and movies for 'free' you have advertisements?  And when you watch programming without advertising, you have to pay for it?  A similar thing happens on mobile devices.)

                          > Dropbox (free on my phone of course)

Both of those are already available on both the NC and NT, and both are also free.  But apparently you're also too lazy to even look and see what you can already get for free.

Or maybe you just wanted to stop by to promote the KF.

                              Mark,

I think the number one reason why there aren't more free apps out there for the Nook is because BN doesn't distribute their SDK to the "garage" developer.

They used to allow anyone to download the SDK and emulator and write code for that, but restricted the ability to run a binary on the device to the only the "chosen ones".

If BN lifted that restriction and allowed anyone to write apps for the platform there would be all sorts of free apps available.

                                  Don,

I just noticed your comment from May, since I don't stop by here very often these days.  Sorry.

First off, I'm painfully aware of the points you made.  I made the same points to B&N about 18 months ago.  :smileysad:

Secondly, if they did open things up, I don't know if 'there would be all sorts of free apps' as a result.  But there certainly would be significantly more than there are now.

I know there was a huge amount of interest from that group when the dev program was initially announced.  And B&N capitalized on that, to imply to the press that it had thousands of devs working on Nook apps, when in reality they had only hundreds.  The thousands were folks who were interested, but not 'qualified', and thus locked out.  The press never caught on, or questioned why it took 50+ "developers" for every app that was making it out.

B&N's concern is partly that the quality standards there would not be good enough, but mostly that 'garage developers' could not be counted on to provide support.  That's an important aspect, because B&N is not in a position to provide any support themselves for individual apps.  Nor are they capable of providing tech support to help out new devs getting started with Android, though some of that could come directly from the community.

The big win from my perspective, in opening things up as you suggested, is that those getting started that way and offering free apps would have some connection to the Nook platform, and go on to create amazing apps tailored specifically to the Nook (which is what B&N claimed was going to happen, but never did).

Droid48 is a free scientific calculator, but not available for the nook.  In addidion Droid48 does not have advertisements.

Though I will admit the hp48 series of calculators are not for most, not even most people wanting or needing a scientific calculator.

I also want swype, even if its from the nook store for a few bucks extra.

Personally I want to see better integration with librarything, google drive connectivity, full device management via Caliber, and drivers for the bluetooth hardware that is already there, (Not to mention the potential for an external kbd and mouse/glidepad/computer integration. )

I also want the ability to change the certain defaults, as an example I want my library to open to my bookshelves, and the ability to identify books that are not yet on shelves.

In addition I want use my nook while its plugged into a computer, instead of the blocking screen.

Here is how you can get this: In addition I want use my nook while its plugged into a computer, instead of the blocking screen.

When you plug in your Nook the USB screen will come up.

Go to 'My Computer' and right click on Nook drive and press 'Eject'.

Then, if you have an SD card in your nook, right click on the drive corresponding to your SD Card and press 'Eject'.

Now the USB window will go away and you can use the Nook while its connected to your computer.
