    Nook Color not charging.

Having some problems with the nook color charging. It only gets to 37% and stops. The system information shows "Not Charging" when I plug in the charger and the connector on the charger stays yellow and never turns grren to indicate full charge. I have shut the nook off completly and let it set over night plugged in and it still stays the same, where it used to take maybe 1-2 hours for a full charge from an almost dead battery. I have tried using multiple wall outlets and usb ports on my computer. Has anyone else ran ino this problem?

        • Re: Nook Color not charging.

There have been a number of reports about problems with the cable itself.  If there's a B&N store near you, I'd take my NC in and try a new cable.  (Take your receipt with you in case the NC itself is defective.)

the exact same thing is happening to mine...did you find a solution?

If you look into device info in settings and it says "not charging" while plugged into a wall outlet, most likely the cable is bad.  Again, the best suggestion is to go to a B&N if you can and have them check it out for you-have them try your cable on a NC, then try a different cable on your NC-also while there I'd see if they will connect it to a computer to make sure everything is working right there as well.

Go to Barnes and Noble, and try with a cable known to be good, and a charger capable of supplying the needed power.  The Nook Color needs a high amperage charger, and most generic chargers/cables can't supply the needed charge.  I just found this out today after my new Nook - only a week old, refused to charge, but I was using a generic cable.

                    • Re: Nook Color not charging.

Mine started doing the same after four months of ownership.

Bought a new cable from a Books-A-Million not far from me with no success.

Guess I'll have to take it up to a B&N to see what's going on.

I have two USB cables that are IDENTICAL to the "special" Nook cable, without the N, so it's understandable one would try that.  In fact, my girlfriend & I had discussed the very thing, when I was reading about the cable.  She looked at it and said it has the same # of pins as her phone charger.  I guess there's a special circuit that lights up the N and changes the color when charged. The cable could be a bit longer though.  It's tempting to use one of the other ones because they are longer.

I don't know what type of phone she has, but my NookColor cable looks like my phone charger, but it's not.  As someone else explained, the proprietary cable has an extra pin to rapidly charge the device.  The phone cable will work, but at a much slower rate.  The plug is also a bit longer than the regular cable.

It really is a different cable, there's been a lot of warnings about not using it to charge the N1E or the N2E.

The NOOKcolor uses a special proprietary cable that does look similar to the standard one. It contains extra pins to allow extra power for quicker charging. You can use a standard cable to charge it, but it will do so very slowly. You may wish to take your NC and charger and cord to a store if possible to find where the fault lies. Most often it is the cord and sometimes stores can give you a new one on the spot. Sometimes, they can't and you have to wait for one to be sent to you. The cords are an issue since they seem to be prone to becoming too loose to make a good connection. Once this happens, you cannot use it to connect to a pc and it may still look like it has charged your NC because the light is green, but if you look on the NC, it will say "not charging". I belive the connector must be somewhat more malleable than standard ones, perhaps due to heat generated. Some have also had the plastic casing come apart. Again I wonder if this is due to heat weakening glue within it. Just a guess.
                          • Re: Nook Color not charging.

I just returned my original NC for a replacement.  One issue . . . the battery was no longer holding a charge after only 8 months of use, second issue was the charger itself.  The pin/metal part that actually goes into the NC was no longer sturdy and couldn't get a good charge going.

First problem, the chargers are made in China . . . that should tell you something lol.  If you call CS you should be able to get just the charger replaced without any problems.

I have suggested time and time again that they move the charger to the top of the NC so you could read while it's charging.  I doubt that will happen lol, don't hold your breath.

A thought . . . no matter where the charger is located on the NC the connection would only be sturdy, without stress, if it's laying flat.

I place a small folded kleenex under the cord of the charger now so that it has no stress at all on it when in use.  I'm hoping that will help it last longer?

I've already replaced my original NC charger cord and now I'm having problems again.  No matter what I do I can't get it to acknowledge being plugged in.  It shows an amber light but in settings it indicates it's not charging. I bought my granddaughter a nook tablet and just plugged my Nook Color into her charger and it's charging fine first try.

After having my original cord fall apart at where the plug goes into the mini usb part, I have been very careful.  I plug it in and leave it alone, no using it while charging.  Guess I have to go to the bn store and get another charger cord.

                                  • Re: Nook Color not charging.

My charger has just started doing the same.  I plug it in the amber light comes on but not shown to be charging on the nook.  The next day I unplugged it and it showed it was charging and there wasn't anything plugged into the nook?  Crazy.  I have two other chargers because this is the second charger I have owned that has gone bad on my and i'm not going to be stuck without the ability to charge.

Did you try another outlet? Thats what i did and i had a similar problem and that fixed it if its on an surge protector try one without a surge protector

I have misplaced my B&N charger (been using generic for months w/no problems).

I haven't used my Nook for 6 - 8 weeks so it lost the charge. Now I am having charging problems. While I look for the B&N charger and cable I notice many mentions of power output of the sturdier generic chargers.

The one I used sucessfully for 4 month has a 1000mA output so it's micro USB end would be rated that high. I note my LG phone charger is only rated 200 mA so understand why that might not work.

What does the B&N charger say on it?

Wondering if anyone can help me.

I bought a Nook almost 6 months ago and haven't had any problems with it until this Sunday evening.

I tried charging it before I started reading on Sunday night and while the light on the cable lit up orange, the reader stated that it was not charging.

I then tried to connect it to the PC only to find that 'Windows does not recognise the drive and there was an error' and then proceeded to tell me that one of my ports were damaged. I have however connected other devices to the ports and they all work perfectly.

Could it be the device or maybe just the cable.

Also its a bit difficult for me to call CS or even walk into a B&N store as I do not reside in the US.

                                          Any help would be appreciated

There is an option to buying a B&N cord to replace the one that failed and certainly an option after having two B&N cables fail.

If you can accept a slower charging rate then there are generic micro USB chargers available that have 1000mA or 1200mA output instead of the 1900mA output from the B&N charger.

These generic chargers are available for $5 to $10 and the cordes are nice and flexible. Just be sure to check the output current as some phone chargers are only 200mA and you need at least 1000mA output.

There are 1900mA battery backup power units. in the $20 - $30 range

Many micro USB chargers on eBay for less than $9. Just be sure the specs say 1000mA or better.

I had this same problem with my NC after having it 4 months. I bought a new charger and that sloved the problem for a month before it quit charging again. After calling Support they told me it was a software issue since the cord itself was lighting up. Factory resetting it temporarily fixed it but they eventually had to send me a different NC. Haven't had this issue with my new one yet.

Rats, mine just started doing this, too. My NC did a soft reboot and dropped back to the original software. Reinstalled the latest version, but now the battery stays at 20% despite reading "charging". I have used a new cable and tried my car adaptor. No luck. The cable indicator will go from yellow to green over time like I am fully charged, but the battery icon stays yellow and the digital percent never changes. Guess I will be visiting the brick and mortar for assistance. :smileyfrustrated:

Now I need to call 800 number to discuss options and cost for repair. Not sure I am comfortable potentially purchasing another NC if it only lasts a year. Books can be viewed via apps on laptop  and smartphone. Googling Amazon Fire and they seem to be having some reports of battery issues, too. What's an avid reader who doesn't have space for more bookshelves to do?

After reading all these post I would have to say there is a software or hardware design problem with the NC.  My wife is the the Nook reader.  I have a CNC machine and it uses a very involved software program. When I go on those web site I can find answers to those post from the hardware or software suppler.  Here I only seem to see user replies.  It would be my guess BN knows they have a problem and hope your nook will run out of warranty.   Great way to get people to by the nook   once.

The Nook chargers are a piece of crap!  My first one started to fall apart within 2 months of getting my NC.  I taped it together, but it still disintegrated a few months later.  I had to request a new charger twice before I got one, and the new one charges verrry sloowwwly and the n never turns green unless I keep the NC on while charging ( and I mean on, not sleeping).  B&N knows the chargers are bad and refuses to redesign them.  I think they expect people will buy another crappy charger for a ridiculously high price when the warrenty expires.  They also expect people to go out and buy a new NC when the battery dies (since supposedly, they're no replaceable).  Well, guess what.  I won't be one of them.  I can read my Nook books (most of which were free, since I can no longer afford most ebooks since the prices skyrocketed)on my ipad (which will replace the battery as long as it's under warranty).  If I want a more portable reading device, I'll just purchase a cheap android tablet and download the Nook and Kindle apps (epecially since Kindle books are often much less expensive than Nook books and the android market has many free apps that I like)

                                                      • Re: Nook Color not charging.
I am having kind of similar issues. My nook color will not charge sometimes and when I plug it in the n light is green saying it is fully charged when it is not actually charging. Then it will start charging very slowly and stop again and go back down.

My nook color charger seems to have completely crapped out.  I called the b & n phone number and they could not have been more helpful.

After going to my local B & N store to determine that the charger was bad, and that the nook itself was ok, I phoned B & N again and they are sending me a charger free of charge (pardon the pun).

I am quite pleased with B & N and will continue to happily use my Nook color.  Fortunately, my wife had purchased the NC extended warranty as my NC is a year and 9 months old - beyond the regular one year warranty.

I had a similar problem. When not plugged in the Nook said dischargings ,like it should, but when plugged in it said not charging. I went to the B & N store and they plugged in one of their chargers and it worked. So I went ahead and bought the new charger $24.99, but make sure you have them test it in the store. I got home and the new charger didn't work either, probably a bad one that was put back on the shelf. But the new charger is working fine now. I think it is the mini plug that goes bad.
                                                            • Re: Nook Color not charging.

Ok...this is exactly what is happening with my Nook Color!  I DID go to the Nook center at the nearby Barnes and Noble and we tested the charger with the store chargers that were charging their displays.  Same thing.  The device flashes from time to time, that the "Your Battery is too low to power On.  Please connect your charger".  Which, of course I am doing.   Otherwise for the sporadic flash of this message, the screen is black.

I have read that this is a problem and unfortunately, the same answer is to check the charger.  I have, as has the store itself.  They gave me a 800 number which I have not called yet (I was hoping I could fix it myself without the hassle of sending it in).

It is September 16, and I received this as a gift for Christmas from my husband.  So sad, to see this problem is not an isolated occurance.  This device is less than a year old....this SHOULD NOT be happening!

Now what?  Where do we go from here????

                                                                Thank You

In the last month, my nook has gone thru 3 cables. My power (outlets) are clean, it seems to be a Q2C issue on the cables.

I am very disappointed with this product..

With all the options out there, I am surprised Nook won't really address this issue...guess they think marketing can cover for poor design....

I will definitely tell everyone I meet the issues I am having with this product and recommend they should run from B&N and look at other products.

                                                                        • Re: Nook Color not charging.
                                                                          kawherp

I've gone though multiple cables. And now the store no longer has cables to swap. They told me I'd have to go online to buy a new one as it is not under warranty. At $25? Not happening! The next cord won't last longer than any of the others have. I've been super careful with my power cord and color nook since I have known it is an issue.

The screen has some lighter blotchy areas, too. I'm wondering if it's on its way out. In which case, I got two solid years of use out of it, but I expected to get more since I am so careful with it. I have an ipod that is 8 years old and still working after begin dropped a couple of times at the gym. My color nook has never been dropped, never subjected to extreme temperatures, lives in a protective cover, and is only charged at home in an outlet that has no trip hazards. Right now, I struggle to get it to charge. The cord has to be wiggled until it is just so... and I cross my fingers every time.

I'm very leery of upgrading to a Nook HD since I have no sense that it will last any longer. It has a different cord, yes. But will the device last? For $240, I really expect to get several years out of it when I treat it with such care.

                                                                            • Re: Nook Color not charging.

Kawherp, I've had no problems with my Nook Color. It's 3+ years.

There are, however, lots of charging cable issues with Nook Color. So perhaps a bunch of charging cables were all bad.

I've never heard of the 'lighter blotchy areas' issue. Could you please explain more what that is?

Can you not try a charger cable for another device with your Nook Color? Any microUSB cable should work.

                                                                                • Re: Nook Color not charging.
                                                                                  kawherp

My phone charger seems to fit, but won't charge it. It's the only cord I have here that even fits. But I've been down this road 3-4 times... the Nook cord fails to charge/connect my Nook to the computer, I go to BN, they swap the cord out, and I'm good for another 6 months.. repeat.

The screen has lighter areas. It's not pinpoints where a single pixel is bad. But there are areas that are noticeably lighter/brighter than others. It's mostly in a vertical line about 1/3 of the way in from the left edge, going most of the way up and down the screen. I can live with it, but it shouldn't be doing this after just 2 years of careful use. I'd understand if it had been living in my middle schooler's backpack and being beaten up. But I handle it carefully.

                                                                                    • Re: Nook Color not charging.

The cord failing every 6 months. Yes, I've seen that.

It makes me wonder - what is it about some people's Nooks (or about the cables they get) that they fail every 6 months.

                                                                                      *****

I thought it was an issue with cables. If so, why would some people never get it and some people get it consistently.

                                                                                      *****

That's strange to have a strip that is lighter than the rest of the screen.

I can't think of anything that might work for that. It seems like the screen itself is dying.

                                                                            • Re: Nook Color not charging.
