Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

Is anyone else having an issue sliding the provided micro-USB cable/charger into the Nook Color? Mine requires some angling and finagling to get in. Was wondering if this is a common issue, or if I'm just really, really unlucky.

Also, when my unit is completely charged and turned off (not sleeping), the nook symbol on the charger is like 3/4's green and 1/4 orange, instead of being completely green. When completely charged and turned on, the charger is completely green though.

I don't feel like exchanging unless I can be reasonably sure the next one doesn't have the same problems. Thanks.

Mine is the same way, I have to really shove it in there to fit.  And if you touch it at while while it is charging, it turns off.  It really is an issue when I am loading items on there, my Mac keeps having an error popping up saying that I disconnected without ejecting properly.

I struggled last night. I thought it was in it's case crooked or something.

            • AC adapter!@!&%

Just wanted to let everyone know I LOVE the new NOOKCOLOR.. Just picked up today and after a few glitches I am up and running plus side loading my library books. BUT  I hate the AC adapter!! It is not small or flexible like the original NOOk adapter. It is also not easy to put into the NC,, That being said  The Color and clarity on the NC is beautiful.. :smileyhappy:

              • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

I'm having difficulty connecting the charger to my NC as well.  I am seriously considering returning the device because of it.  This wouldn't be such a concern to me if the NC had lengthier battery life and required less frequent charging.  However, I expect I'll need to charge it several times a week and I have no interest in "fighting" and "coaxing" the adapter with every charge.

My recommendation would be to exchange it at a local B N store and test the adapter connection of the replacement.  while in the store.

                  • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

Me too. Brought my Nookcolor back to the B&N store. They said a lot of people are having hte problem, and not to worry about it. As long as you can get it in and it charges, there should be no problem. I'm gonna be PISSED if it breaks because of this and I have to wait weeks for a replacement...

Also -- I compared mine to the others they had inthe store. The others were easier to plug usb in, but they all leave about a 1/10" of space between the unit and the butt-end of hte usb plug showing. This makes it 'look' like it isn't plugged in all the way, but apparently it is.

Hint: Its easier to get plug in if you angle it up as you plug it in...i.e. hold hte plug lower than the unit, tilt it up toward the unit, and slide it in that way. Seems to work best that way...

You are not alone. I bought mine yesterday and I am having the same issue as well. Fear is the same - that it does not break the connections.

                    • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

SOB!!!!  The charger is a piece of c..p!  the first one was very difficult to slide in so I exchanged it and they had to replace the entire nookcolor, BECAUSE, unlike the ipad,  B and N doesn't carry accessory essentials IN THE STORE.

How can you come out with a new product and be half equipped?  Placement of the charging port is VERY POOR DESIGN:smileymad:  Cannot sit at the table with it charging since the edge won't sit flat...very uncomfortable. should have been on top.  Cannot use just any micro usb, tried the i-go ....NO GO!  I'm thinking about returning and getting the ipad. I am sooo pissed off!

I wonder why your igo cable didn't work. My nook3g cable works fine. My understanding is you loose the fast charge with a standard cable. I know my local bn store had acc. for 3g, don't know about color. I know this does not fix the problem, and it does need fixing, but I think if might be safer to get a standard usb to micro usb for file transfers.

I was also experiencing this problem. Just as it seemed to be getting a little better, I now have a more urgent problem. When I connect my NC to my pc via the USB my ADE does not even acknowledge it anymore. If I go to My Computer and then try to open the Nook, I get an error telling me to insert a disk in Drive E and the same when I try to open Drive F. What this means to me is now I cannot move library books to my Nook from my pc. So far the cable was okay when I last charged it. I followed the instructions for setting up ADE and NC and that was okay with the exception that instead of it showing up on my ADE as "Nook", it showed up as Xmedia, but name difference aside, I have been able to load 4 library books. I was wanting to load a couple of pdfs to see how they display and just can't get it to open. Bad cord? Should I return or is there an easy fix?

                          Thanks for any help.

I got my NC last week and have had the same issues. It is difficult to connect it to the NC device, and then it loosens up and disconnects itself from my pc.   When I do connect the NC, I have to make sure it isn’t jostled or else the pc thinks I unplugged the NC without ejecting it, and then it kills my USB ports.  All of them, and then a reboot is required.  I checked over my USB hardware on my machine and all the drivers are current.

I bought another charger from BN to see if it might have been that particular adapter that came with the NC.  Not the case.  It will have to go back.  I’m also having problems with ADE authorizing the device which I posted about and haven’t had any luck resolving that issue yet.  No problems with my nook classic in that area…

I’ll be returning mine this week.  I should have waited a few months to see how the NC bugs shook out first and after the first software update.

Unfortunately it sounds like the adapter problem is a wide spread issue.  It won’t compel me to buy an iPad though.

I've had problems getting the connector into the USB port since I got my NOOKcolor two weeks ago.  I am by no means a novice when it comes to computers and mobile devices and have been incredibly frustrated by this poor design.  And as of today the "n" in the connector no longer lights no matter how carefully I try to plug the connector into the port.  The bottom line is that if the connector won't seat, the device won't charge, and it then becomes pretty darned useless.  Mine is going to have to go back tomorrow.  Unfortunately, the closest Barnes & Noble is a good hour and a half away.

                              • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

I have the same problem.  I found that if I don't slide it in straight on, but rather slightly tilted upwards, it goes in pretty smoothly.  A little silly, but unfortunately not something they can fix with a firmware update, so we're stuck with it.

                                  • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color
                                    BluesBaby

I was able to get the connector into Barnes and Noble's oddball microUSB port by tilting it slightly upwards (never an easy task, though), and it seemed to be working just fine for the past couple of weeks; however, as of yesterday morning, that just didn't work anymore.  I tried everything I could think of for more than half an hour and then went back and tried it again a few hours later with absolutely no luck with the supplied cable and adapter.  I even inspected both the port and the connector under a strong magnifying glass and couldn't see anything obviously wrong with either one (I've been working with both hardware and software professionally for more years than I'm going to confess to here :smileywink:).  I finally gave up and went back to reading on the Nook for Android app on my Dell Streak.  I rarely use my classic Nook because I prefer reading on a backlit screen.

I eventually was able use a generic microUSB to charge the NC enough so I could connect to my computer and back up my files prior to returning the device...charging that way seemed to take forever even though I only charged it to slightly more than 30%.

Well have had the Nookcolor for one week.  Used no more than three hours.  Plugged the power cord in tonight and the end (with the light) just fell apart. Of course they say that it is the only cord one can use.  I only have 20 or 30 USB cables lying around the house.  Isn't it enough that I paid several hundred dollars and buy B & N books and you make me have to buy your damn cable???  I think I will just take it back and buy a Kindle or just wait for a more responsible user friendly unit.  Charging this unit every 8 hours is insane.

                                    • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

I had the same problem with my USB cable. I thought it was me but I brought one by mistake when I ordered my nookcolor, so I had a extra one and that went in fine. So I think its just the cable.

                                      • Some Charging Cable Issues Were Clarified a Month Ago by Adminstrator...

Yes I have the same problem with insertion of the NC Micro USB plug, they should have designed it with the Mini USB plug as successfully used on Motorola and HTC phones.  However, the Micro USB

is now the de facto standard for new Smartphones, but I think it's not as rugged as the Mini USB.

I posed this question on NookColor board a month ago (11/09) before I had my NC delivered:

"Just curious, but why is there one cable for NookColor and one for Nook 3G/WiFi included in the Car charging kit if both use the MicroUSB plug?  Are the pinouts of each cable different, and what, if any, damage might result from mixing up the cables?  Are the devices protected from this occurence?"

Here is answer from Board Admin Michael-V:

                                        "@Capcom,

The NOOKcolor comes with a wall adapter charger designed for fast charging that will charge your NOOKcolor to 80% in 2 hours, and fully charge your NOOKcolor in 4-5 hours. If you operate your NOOKcolor while charging, then the charging process will take longer (depending on activity).

When connected to a PC or Mac via a USB cable, NOOKcolor can charge but at a much slower rate and only if the device is not in use. Otherwise using the device will actually consume more power that it receives from the USB cable.

NOTE: We do not recommend using any other wall adapter charger including the original NOOK charger.

NOOKcolor has a custom connector that is compatible with usb connectivity.

While the NOOKcolor connector may appear the same as a microUSB connector, the connector is slightly longer supporting a second set of pins dedicated for charging at a higher rate for a higher capacity battery (when compared to Nook and other mobile devices). As a result the NOOKcolor connector will NOT work in other typical microUSB ports.

However you can use a microUSB connector on the NOOKcolor to sync data from a PC/MAC, but not for the fast charging provided by your dedicated NOOKcolor cable.

One more thing – the NOOKcolor cable should ONLY be used with the provided NOOKcolor AC adaptor."

If you notice, the NC wall charger has an output rating of 1.9Amps @ 5 Volts and the yet to be released NC car charger is rated at 2.1 Amps.  I was looking around Best Buy for an alternative USB jack type car charger and found biggest one was 1.0 A.  Guess I'll have to wait for the B&N NC car charger to become available?,,,,,

                                          'Evidently Nooks respond to threats'

I wish mine did.  I have this exact problem, too.  It is annoying. My 'n' was lighting up either bright red or not at all.  After messing with it, I could get it to go to the orangish it is when charging.

I went to a B&N store. They took it away for a few minutes, came back and told me they got the plug to light up red, also.  Gee, now that we have THAT established...then had the nerve to act as if I am too simple to figure out how to plug a charger into a device.  They finally told me I needed to be 'more careful' when charging my device.  They did not treat my problem with the concern and dignity it deserved, neither did they solve that problem.

I suppose I will have to find another B&N store or I will have to call the 800 number.  I usually get a decent person with the 800 number, but it takes longer to resolve any issue I may have.

I do not like the idea of wiggling or adjusting the charger in the NC, I don't like the thought I might damage something internal, then I'll really be in a snit.  I did get the extended 2 yr warranty, though.  That way, I can know that I am covered for any mishap, not just something that B&N can pooh pooh away with the ordinary 1 yr defect clause.

If anyone has any other solutions other than the threats (although I do like that one, it did not work in my case.  I guess my NC is as mean and tough as I am), I'd like to hear them.

Now we are having the same issue with it being difficult to slide in.

                                              Afraid it will break.

I also have this problem with a Nook Color received for Christmas.  The cable was difficult to insert.  Also, the cable needs to be held in a precise position, or else the unit stops charging.  This is especially bad when it's connected to my PC for transferring files.  If the cable is moved, the best case scenario is that the Nook Color disconnects, and the worst case scenario is that all of my PC's USB ports stop working.  Both scenarios have happened.  I've had to do a hard reset on my PC -- not good at all.

I have to say, my connection is working great. A little tight the 1st time but is easier now. The case I have from B&N has a large enough hole to accomodate. Also I purchased a retractable USB  kit from Walmart so that I have a seperate cable for sideloading.

I don't power off when charging and the cable changes color from amber to solid green as soon as complete, which by the way is relatively quick. There are a lot of options out there for more portable power cords that will charge all your devices I carry one when I travel that can charge the laptop, blackberry, and nook. B&N did a great job with the NOOK COLOR and I can't wait for new apps. If the only problem is a poorly designed charger I'm doing great. Still can't justify the cost of an iPad as an eReader.:manhappy:

Bought this thing last week as a birthday present for my 8 yr old daughter. On first use setting the unit up, I noticed that charger was difficult to slide in. I knew it was not normal. In the last few days I observed my daughter struggle with it each time she wanted to charge it. Then yesterday it wouldn't charge at all. BN replaced the entire unit today no questions asked. The new unit is charging right before me as I write but sliding the charger in is still frustrating. Not sure I want to put my little girl through this. She is used to gadgets and their charger but this is frustrating. Considering, asking for a refund now that we have not invested in many books yet. Nook color by itself is great and my daughter likes it.

Some folks have reported that it gets easier: after a little time, after a little practice, or by being careful of the angle of entry. Yes, it is a little balky, but all of us are managing.

As you probably are aware, the charger cable is special, with extra pins to allow fast charge of the NC. You seem to be able to use an ordinary cable for connecting to a PC to transfer files, etc.

Yes, I have a terrible time plugging mine it.  My husband also has a problem plugging it in.  I actually took mine back to the store and one of their salespeople actually broke it and they had to exchange it for me.  The new one is just as difficult.  Sometimes it is easy.  Other times I feel like it will neve connect again.

I got mine in November. The first time I plugged the cord in to the Nookcolor I didn't realized that it had to go further in than my Classic Nook. I panicked a bit when the 'n' light didn't come on as the instructions indicated.

I admit it was a little awkward the second and third time but it got much easier quickly.

I have to agree with everyone on the NC charger connection being difficult to insert. Now I am having a problem with the charger getting extremely hot. I unplugged it so it would not cause any damage to my NC. MAy have to buy a new charger...wow...and this is not that old.

                                                                  • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

When I first had it there was some difficulty getting it to slide in properly. Now, it doesn't work at all. I phone technical help and am receiving a new charger for no charge because it is less than one year old.

                                                                    • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

I do like it, a lot, but the whole power thing is horrible. Can't charge while in my stand-up case because the mini usb sticks out to far (- JAVOedge case, has all the the port holes needed.) The charge indicator wavers from amber to gold to green, even on full charge. I'm concerned the thing will break and then i'll be stuck with a $250 paperweight. I won't be a happy camper then...

                                                                      • Re: Difficult to slide charger into Nook Color

However when I do get it in it charges.

Since then I have bought 2 sets of charging kits and a cable which just broke a while ago. All of which are useless right now. I even instructed my kids not to touch the charger so I charge the device everytime. The Nookcolor itself is wonderful. My kids enjoy hours of reading and browsing the web.
