    New Nook Ghosting issues?

    artseattle

On another forum some owners of the new Simple Touch Nook have noticed (complained) about a ghosting left from the previous pages that is not removed until the major page refresh that occurs every six page turns.  They describe being able to see the letters and graphics from the previous pages very lightly in the background.  Anyone noticing this?  Is it distracting?

I saw it when I played with a demo unit, but as soon as I was doing something other than look for ghosting, I didn't really even notice it.

I saw that Mobileread article. He posted a picture today showing a large amount of "white" on the page (during a dictionary lookup) and it looks pretty rough. It's not too noticeable when the page is filled with text.

I haven't seen any ghosting with mine so far either. I'm very impressed with both the touch screen and it's overall responsiveness.

I purchased mine this morning, then took it out by the pool.  The ghosting on mine was pretty significant - so much so that the letters of the current page were mottled where the previous page's letters were.

I took it by the store to see what could be done and they were going to exchange it with a different one, but they were out.  I guess if other folks are having the same issues, then it is in the design and not with my particular unit.

I saw someone mentioned the actual "refresh" only happened every 6 page turns?

All e-Link displays suffer from some amount of ghosting its just a matter of how noticble it is. I had to load the image from Moblilereads forum in an image editor and crank the contrast up to see what he was talking about.

With the N1E I was rather annoyed when update 1.5 was released with the faster page turns. I had just started a book with a lot of images and the images always ghosted to the next page.

As new as your unit is, I would use it for 14 days and see if it doesn't improve. If it doesn't improve to your satisfaction return it and get either a replacement or a credit. My guess is that effect will lessen as the display is exposed to light.

The "screen refresh" people are refering to isn't an actual refresh but a page flush. Thats where the entire screen is turned black then white to reduce any ghosting effect. On the N1E and most e-Ink devices that happens on every page turn. On the Nook 2E that happens every 6 pages.

Just experienced the similar issue here.

The screen was amazing until I read like 100 or so pages, and after I looked up a word, the dictionary window had the real bad case of ghosting. Then, I turned couple of more pages, and those pages also showed overlapped ghosting effect. (in a quite a dark fashion).

I went back to the home screen, then immediately went back to the book, and it was fine.

                        But.

                        I don't like it.

I've had my new Nook since June 4. So far I haven't seen the issue at all, and I've read 15 books so far on it.

I have not seen it and from my experiences with a couple books I have read the refresh on every 6th page is not a strict 6th page. I read a book that had symbols used throughout the book & when it was used the next page refreshed even if it was not the 6th page & I am currently reading a baseball book & just through the part where photos were posted & each page refreshed. So I think the programming is based on if it feels there will be ghosting or not & if deemed necessary will do a auto refresh to resolve the issue. I could be wrong but this is what I have noticed. BTW it does impact the battery but not significantly ...

I noticed this ghosting issue, so I called the customer service number, they were very polite, but not very helpful, the troubleshooting method was to turn it off, wait 20 seconds and then turn it back on.  I was asked repeatedly which books I have noticed the problem on and if I have dropped the Nook.  I will be taking my Fathers Day gift Nook to a B&N store to see if they can help.  Why not refresh every page?

For me the ghosting is beyone significant.  Well maybe it's so significant that's it's not ghosting. lol

For me the whole page grays out into a dark gray  all around the page and make it more than noticeable, it almost impossible to read.  It looks like when you press the n button and the whole screen darkens.  Turning pages only seems to make this issue worse and putting it to sleep doesn't rectify the problem.  I have to turn it off, which is a big pain in the middle of reading.

I talked to C/S who had me to a erease/deregister which was a pain, since I've only had the device one day so i've basically  all night last nichg and all morning this morning set up my Nook.

Is anyone else having this problem to this degree???

I've had mine since the day it was released to the public. I've encountered significan ghosting twice. Each time required a reboot.

I've had my new Nook touch for 4 days and yesterday I experienced my first problems with ghosting of images from the prevous pages.  It did not clear up with the page refresh.  The only thing that cleared it was to power completely off and back on.  I didn't have any problems the rest of the day but today I've experienced it again and once agian the only thing that cleared it was to power completely off and on again.  It in not an issue of the light on the screen as right before the problem and after it's cleared up by powering on/off the image is clear and there's no ghosting in the exact same light.  I'm prepared to trade it in for another but I'm wondering if it's not just a failure with my particular reader but some other glitch in the new Nook.

I've had similar issues as well, to the extent where multiple previous pages would bleed through into my current page and it is very noticeable.  It fixed itself after I restart it but I'm hoping it'll somehow fix itself so I don't have to return it.

I just bought the New Nook 4 days ago. The ghosting started a couple of days later and a full power down seems the only resolution. Today is been ghosting frequently and become very hard to read at times. If it keeps it up I will have to return the reader. Too much $ for such an issue.

I've had mine for two days now and I'm seeing this.  Maybe this is how e-ink book readers work and I didn't do all my research before buying one....I never spent extended periods reading on the demo units in the stores...but i don't like this.

Yes, four times now.  I took pictures this latest episode and I am taking the photos with me to B & N since it does it intermittently.

I'm on my 4th book on my N2E. To date the only time it's been terribly noticeable was when I was reading a book that had a light colored (not white) background. Even then it didn't really bother me. If I turn the page and it's not one of the pages that do a full refresh, if I hold the thing at the right angle under a strong light, I can kind of see the ghosting. Honestly, at worst it's about 1/2 as noticeable as the text bleeding through from the back side of a paper book page. I would have to make a conscious decision to be bothered by it in order for it to bother me. The slightly faster / less flashy page turn is really about the only reason I picked the Nook over the Kobo, though now that I've had the Nook for a few weeks I would go with it again anyway because of the insanely good job they did with designing the case, particularly the bezel page turn buttons on both sides. I use these a LOT, on both sides and wouldn't want to lose them. Also it fits better in the pocket than the Kobo.

I am having the issue with my present second reader. Having returned the first one within the two week purchsing period for the same problem. I am returning the second one today and will try one more time. I prefer the new reader over the original because of the size. My wife has the original and it's too bulky for me. I hope this is the" third time's a charm" one.

Ghosting problems started setting in for me after a month, and they are getting worse. I love the size of the new Nook, but B&N's solutions of restarting the device or deregister/reregister is ridiculous. If this had happened in the 14 day period, I wouldn't be an owner right now. I've been working with customer service and a local store and htey still haven't agreed to repalce it yet. Very frustrating!

My daughter's week old Nook had it's first ghosting episode tonight. Placing the nook in sleep refreshed the page.

She has also had a problem with freezing the first couple of days but nothing since. Not too worried yet, but will consider calling B&N about a replacement if the problesm continue after updates.

Their telephone customer service made me feel like I was the bad guy all the way through this process. Hope I never have to deal with them again!

I've held off purchasing a Simple Touch and I'm glad I did.  I've been to B&N several times to try out the Simple Touch and the other day was the first time I saw ghosting.  It was very noticeable and, if I owned the device, I would have been quite upset.  I asked the salesman about the ghosting and he said it had been resolved in a firmware update.  But after reading this thread, I know the salesman was wrong.

I hope B&N takes care of this issue soon, perhaps doing what Kobo did and making the page refresh time user-selectable.  Until they do I'm not making the purchase.

Reading through this thread, I take away a couple things:

                                                                1) Extreme examples that are likely device defects aside, the ghosting seems to be caused by the changes made to the logic governing the page refresh rate. The B&N development team needs to look at this overall and look at including user-selected refresh rates in future firmware updates. With a clear statement in the user manual that selected a higher refresh rate (to reduce ghosting) will likely result in greater battery consumption, slightly slower page turn rates, and more noticeable flashing between pages.

                                                                2) B&N customer service needs to stop relying on "when in doubt, de-register & re-register your NOOK" as a solution to technical problems. It may be the solution in this case, but too often I've seen examples from people with problems that could easily be solved in other ways (such as simply turning off and restarting the device) that have been told to de-register. If the process were not such a PITA, that would be fine; but falling back to factory settings and having to reload everything should not be the go-to solution.

I'm not too worried about the ghosting issue at this point. It won't stop me from getting my N2E in a few weeks. (Saving up my $$.)

I've read about this issue online and seen it firsthand in store. Given that this problem appears to have such a simple solution (as other posters have noted), it is frustrating that BN has not taken action. The second I hear about an update that resolves this problem, I'll order the new nook, but until then, I'll be sticking with my reliable original model.

I loved my NE1, so I jumped on the chance to get the NST when I saw a deal for $79.99 plus a 2GB microSD card a few days ago.

Well, it arrived today and now I wish I didn't. The ghosting on this thing is sickening to me. I flip the page and just watch line after line of off-white crap appear behind the black text. Tried resetting it, tried updating to 1.10, and it's the same. Is there a burn in time on this thing that I should let it run for or is this just faulty? My NE1 never had this problem, (because of per-page refresh, obviously) and I cannot stand it and do not see how anyone else could, which makes me think that not all units are experiencing this. Has anyone exchanged a NST because of ghosting and got one that does not ghost? All it would take is to add a per-page refresh back into the software, but judging by the technological race to the bottom on these things, I'm guessing we won't get it.

As if this wasn't bad enough, I had a book freeze twice (physical page turns and touch screen would not work, but nook button would) and then a crash (a pop-up that some part of the software was not responding...ON AN E-READER!?).

This thing is going back for sure. The only question is if it is an exchange or a return. My NE1 works fine, and the only thing I was really looking for was the dictionary and highlighting, so I might just wait for the next version.

                                                                  • Re: New Nook Ghosting issues?

Since you've just gotten the device I would try going to a store to exchange it if you have a store near you.  As far as ghosting is concerned, I've had my N2E since it was released and only once saw a ghosting issue.  A reboot solved that.  My initial thought is that you may have a defective Nook if a reboot (powering off all the way and powering on again) doesn't fix the problem.

                                                                    Good luck.

I have read many pages of this thread, as well as the more recent posts and I didn't see the easy fix I've read about on the XDA forums of the NST.

I too sometimes notice ghosting, especially if I'm reading in sunlight and after turning a few pages

                                                                    .

THE QUICK, EASY FIX IS TO DOUBLE CLICK THE HOME BUTTON TO FORCE A REFRESH OF THE SCREEN.

Give it a try and report back.

From what I can tell from the example images, your NOOK is behaving normally. The lower refresh rate increases battery life, but it does mean ghosting can become noticeable, especially when there are large areas of white space on the new page for the afterimage to ghost into.

I wouldn't consider this a bug/issue, as this was how it was designed. It is an issue in the sense that some people find it bothersome.

If the ghosting is so bad it actually obscures words or prevents reading, I'd be worried. So far I haven't seen an example of this. Everyone just seems to have a different tolerance for artifacting.

Which is why page refresh rate should be user adjustable. (With a clear warning that setting it below the factory preset may reduce battery usage substantially.)

                                                                        • Re: New Nook Ghosting issues?

I am trying to determine if the issues I see are "normal"  or worse than average.  When reading my NST, about every other time I use it I can see text from the previous page as well as the text on the current page gets much lighter and/or has spots in the letters.  If there are photos as in a Newspaper, I can often see previous text in the photo.

Also, if I push N button twice it usually improves, but the bottom couple rows are fully dark and the rest of the text is quite  a bit lighter. Also, the improvement typically does not last more than 1 page. Sometimes the text gets so bad it is hardly readable.

Other times I can read 50 to 100 pages with no issues.

Will BN help with things like this if I take it to a store even though I bought it at bn.com??

So if you have sideloaded any material, make sure you copy it to your PC or a memory card before going to the store.

I stopped by B&N today to ask them about it, and the Nook lady told me it's most likely caused by being on the shelf in the store too long (my hubby bought it at Target). It wouldn't happen if he had bought one at B&N. Upon mentioning this forum topic she would have me believe that most of you must have purchased your Nooks from a vendor other than B&N, so I'm wondering if that's true?

I hope she's right and there will not be any more ghosting. The only other question I have is, how do I move the one book I bought from my Nook to my Mac so I can do the deregistering thing and not lose my book? I'm not seeing the file in the Nook's book folder.

                                                                                • Re: New Nook Ghosting issues?

I could see if there was a known hardware issue that has been identified and fixed: that would definitely cause an old inventory/new inventory problem.

Though make sure you read through this thread and others for descriptions of normal ghosting and the refresh rate on the N2E. Your situation may be a defect, or you may just not be used to the normal ghosting yet. (Some are more sensitive to it than others.)

I haven't allowed my nook to updates it software, but if the new version corrects ghosting even a bit I don't think it will be noticable at all.
