    PC unable to see NC

    lollyLD

I too have been unable to get my NC to show up on my laptop running Vista or my desktop running XP. I have read similar problems left by other users. Following the suggestions, I have made sure the NC is definitely awake (swiped the bar across screen). I have rebooted everything and tried different USB ports on both computers. I did call CS and they had me unregister my NC and reregister, but this did not change anything. Finally they said they were sending me a new cable. I was told not to try any other cable, but NC, so I don't know if this will even fix the problem. (I have been waiting 10 days, so called again and learned that it has not shipped yet.) Should I try and buy another (they are not available online from BN)? I have only had NC for a month and never been able to use PC to transfer files. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

BTW, my cable has just started having new problems- won't  charge when its plugged into wall. Once the battery is very low, it starts to charge then. it used to work fine. I do not "see" any physical problems with cable as some have described it splitting. I miss my NC and want to check out library books!

They have had to replace a lot of these cables, so it may take a while.

For file transfer, a standard USB/microUSB cable will work fine.  I connect to my Linux & Mac with one and it seems to connect more quickly.

Charging the NC is the problem and that is why the stock cable is different.  I would call back and try to apply some pressure.

Thank you. It did seem that a cable problem might be the answer, that was until I read that many other users were experiencing a similar problem. Eventually, the cable stopped charging (after all my fiddling - moving from one computer to another and then between USB ports...I worried I had unsuspectingly damaged it (I guess I might have). Now it probably is the cable since it doesn't handle either task...hopefully it's not that fragile?! I will probably go ahead and order another cable for connecting to PC, and also call BN CS again for the charging cable. Thanks again

Def sounds like a cable problem.

For others experiancing this trbl on Vista, try removing the micro SD card. For some reason Vista seems to have trbl with 2 drives on 1 USB???  I don't like having to do it but I have a SD/microSD USB adapter and I use that to acces my SD card when needed. I believe I read here that the trbl is only on PCs running Vista 64. Anyone else have some insight on this?

I've had the same problem running windows 7.  A "generic" cord seems to work - with the usb directly in the laptop.

I had not heard of this cable problem - will probably try to get a back up.  Everyone thinks the generic micro usb work - but apparently they do not.  I did try to charge my NC one day with one of my generic micro cords - it did work, but it took a really long time......

I had the same problem a month ago. Didn't work on either windows 7 or xp. Try turning off wifi....for some reason this was the answer for me...I have had no problems since. About the cable and charging...we all know it is poorly designed. What I have figured out is to gently put pressure on the cablt til you see the amber charge light...sometimes I have to place a book or something on the cable to keep it in the correct position to charge. Hope this Helps!

                      Interesting.

I also had quite a bit of connectivity problems yesterday while I had my NC connected to my PC (via generic micro cable).  We re-booted everything today (including modem and router) and NC was no longer in the queue.  All appears to be working ok.  Hate to say it was related as I'm sure traffic was heavy yesterday (Super Bowl).  But seems suspicious given the comments about wifi.......

The cable is the culprit. I had the same problem but noticed it in the opposite order.....one day noticed that it was no longer charging, plugged it into pc to see if i could charge from that and noticed the pc no longer saw the nc at all. I called the local bn store, described the prob, brought it in, they tested my cable on their nc then their charger on my nc. It was the cable. They gave me a new cable then and there, easy as pie. I was in the store all of ten minutes. No problems since.
