What are you covering your HD+'s with?

    cindylee60

I ordered the Groovy cover, but have read a couple people got them and didn't really like them. I'll have to see if I like mine when it comes (though that might be difficult since it shipped and my HD+ has been delayed)

What did everyone get and do they like it?

I've been waiting for Oberon to announce a cover for the HD+ tab size, but so far they just plan a sleeve.

        • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?

I purchased the Groovy cover in purple. It is ok, it doesn't seem as sturdy as I would like for a stand cover to be. I will probably keep it and get a second one, maybe one of the 360 covers.

            • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?
My groovy cover was defective. The left-hand side of the HD+ and the groovy do not line up. I thought it was due to.my dyslexia, but a random cover at a bn store was also wrong. A shame, because design wise t would have been nice. I bought something else. I got the Lautner. I checked out the cheetah, but it looked would not hold up well if I folded it back. I hope your Groovy is.okay. Oh all those periods in my typing? The new keyboard. Tohu

I got one of the 360 covers (Black).  It is very good and the tablet swivels 360 so the cover can be used with the NOOK HD+ Horizontal or Vertical.  HD+ can be placed in both directions to both axis.  It seems sturdy enough but no closure catch.

I bought the 360 cover in burgundy . I had the groovy cover ordered in purple but after seeing the two side by side I  decided on the 360 . I wish that BN would have had more colors or prints to choose from in the 360 cover .. but it is sturdy.

Got the HD+ yesterday along with the Groovy cover.  LOve the HD+, but the cover's going back.  It is just chintzy.  Feels cheap. skimpy.  The edges are sharp, so it's very uncomfortable to hold in the hand. I'm thinking of holding out for an Oberon cover--sleeve would be even better.

I got both of The New Yorker covers for my HD+. I had to take one back because I didn't notice (I was so excited Thursday that my HD+ had came that I forgot to double check the entire cover before purchasing it) that one of the small holders were cracked.

I like these covers a lot because they are easy to open. With my Nook tablet, my first was the red cover with the clasp...loved it overall with the exception that I didn't like the clasp hitting my N-Tablet.., and for I recently got the Submarine Beatles cover for sale which I LOVE.

Today I returend the Groovy cover and replaced it with the 360 degree cover,  The new one is more substantial but still light.  It doesn't have the open-to-turn-on feature of the Groovy cover, but I that's no biggie.  I had considered an Oberon cover--I have one for my NC and it is a lovely work of art.  The only problem is that it is heavy.  The HD+ is light for its class, but still quite a bit heavier than the NC; adding the extra weight of the Obernon cover didn't make sense to me.  I'd called them and they said they would be making a cover for te HD+, to be released in late November/early December.  they didn't mention a sleeve.  They had made a sleeve for readers the sixe of the NC and the Kindle Fire, but they've discontinued them, so I'm not sure if they'll try them again for larger tablets.  I'd have opted for that if it were available now; but I didn't want to leave it unprotected for another month or two.

Barnes and Nobles clearly has issues with its current caases for the Nook HD+.  For the most part they arent' attractive or offer a significant variety in their designs.  I looked at the Groovy before settling on the 360.  It does add bulk but it has a better feel and I'd imagine will be more usable long term.  However, it only comes in two colors - neither of which is what I would've preferred, but is all that was available.  It also seems ridiculous the case doesn't showcase the sleep/wake functionality provided by the Nook.  Its a Barnes and Noble case made for a Barnes and Noble device!  That's really unexcusable.

The other issue I have with the cases is their packaging.  You have to look on the back of the box to determine the type of case.  There should be a graphic on the front of the box indicating whether its a Groovy, 360, etc.  Just a little visual beneath the Nook HD / HD + logo.  It took myself and the clerk at the B&N store to find the 360 cover.  It was clearly indicated on the display shelving, but the store had all the cases there - jumbled together.

I hope something better comes out in the aftermarket.  But, Barnes and Noble should be ashamed of what it's offering in case design for its signature device.

I am using the groovy cover. I actually don't find it flimsy. The automatic turn on / off feature saves wear and tear on buttons. We will see about the edges, could be a wear issue. The viewing angle when in landscape is perfect for me, bifocals.

I purchased the Seaton cover in purple, and it will be going back to the store today.  Don't like the feel of it, is boring just purple, also didn't like the fact that there were no pockets like the old quote cover I had for my old Nook.  Was handy for when you only wanted to bring your Nook into the coffee shop etc and I miss having that option.  Was really disappointed the choices were so boring or ugly.

I purchased the groovy cover and at first, I too thought it might be too flimsy. My nook covers tend to take a lot of abuse as I keep my nook at hand at all times. One concern I had with purchasing both the HD+ and a cover was weight and portability. I always look for a purse that is not too big but has a side pocket to keep my nook separate from the contents of my purse and easy to get to and put away. I was quite surprised to find that my new HD+ and groovy cover actually fit into the side pocket easier and with less bulk than my NC with it's industrial easel cover. I try to keep my purses as small as I can get away with to force me to keep what I put into it at a minimum because I get serious back pain otherwise. The new HD+ with it's cover seems lighter in my purse than the NC with it's cover and it is less deep so it actually creates less bulk as well.

Even with covers that can perform as easels, I rarely use them as such, prefering to use an actual easel to raise my device up off the surface for easier viewing and in the case of reading cookbooks and such, keeps it safer from accidental spills and such. I AM quite messy when I cook.

I'm quite happy with my cover and the HD+. I worried about the size and weight being comfortable to use, but I worry no longer.

I have to say, that when I read the subjet of "What are you covering your HD+'s with?" that my first reaction was to type in:

                                "Hugs and Kisses"

But that seems a bit creepy so I'll just say I'm covering mine with the Black 360. It's a heavier case, but as far as I'm concerned that's perfect since mine gets tossed into a bag and goes with me every day.  My only wish is that it had a clasp to hold it shut but that's pretty minor.

I have the same one.  It is light, feels good in the hand, looks elegant and will stand the Nook up in landscape or portrait.

I was checking out alternative covers for the HD+ and found one with a BT keyboard built-in  at Amazon, and I am thinking about getting it: check it out, search for at Amazon

I found the Ionic Bluetooth Keyboard Tablet Stand Leather Case for the Nook HD+ as well.  On Amazon for only $35 plus $3 shipping.  It does not have any reviews as of yet because it is not in stock until January 3rd.  I called the company shipping the product because the ad on Amazon really does not give any deminsions, only that it weighs 1.4 pounds.  I wonder how bulky it will make the device appear.

The representative that I talked with says that she was going to measure it for me but sinceh it is not in stock until January 3rd her company does not have any at this time either.  I suppose for the price it is not a bad deal to at least try it.

I called the tech support line at BN for info on what bluetooth keyboard they recommend and they told me to call my local store.  That was disappointing, I thought that BN would have at least done some research on how to expand and improve the sell value of the device but they have not done so apparently.

Don't get me wrong, I love my device.  I also own the Nook Color.  I would just like to see BN do something to expand and be a leader, not a follower, in the tablet industry.  It would also help if they expanded their app store to include more choices.  After all the device is running ICS.

If I decide to get the accessory I will write back and let you know how it works.

Since Oberon Design doesn't yet make covers for the HD+, I just went down to my B&N store and got the cheapest cover available (in chocolate) to tide me over until Oberon comes through.  In the meantime I'll continue to go over the fantastic Oberon designs trying to make up my mind which one to get when they finally come through with an HD+ cover.

If I could delete my earlier whine here about the Seaton cover being drab, I would. After reading about all the doo-dads on these other covers, I realized that Seaton was just what I wanted--something plain, like a bookjacket. The Seaton is lightweight, and tasteful. (Plus I just discovered last night that this HD+ comes with some pretty nifty wallpaper options, which just made a very good thing even better) :smileyhappy:
                                              • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?

I was pretty disappointed in the 360 cover for all the reasons people have listed: bulky, kind of ugly, and no magnetic clasp (such a great feature on the Javoedge cover for my Nook Color). I felt a bit coerced into overpaying for something that was adequate at best, because the HD+ wasn't going to be rattling around in my bag naked.

The case has grown on me, though. The lack of clasp isn't a big deal now that the cover is broken in, and the pro of being bulky is that the case protects my tablet well enough that I don't have to worry about it. The swivel stand is a sound design, too, and easy to close up and put away quickly even if I have the tablet standing in portrait. I'd still rather it didn't have that generic "floor mat" look/feel and did have a magnetic clasp.

Don't like this, don't like that, corners too sharp, too thick, to heavy, not quality workmanship and all those issues. Seems like lots of people have problems with the store bought covers. Why not be unique and make your own.

Find a nice colored hard back book of the right size with a title that matches your attitude, my first cover is "And Another Thing" by Eoin Colfer. I found it at a Good Will store. It is showing quite a bit of wear after the first year, but the hard cover is lighter weight, thinner, and tougher than those in the store.

Because of style differences I won't share here how I made my cover, but you can check the Internet and YouTube for instructions, be careful though, there are a lot of ideas out there. Save $30 and creative at the same time.

I use a layer of plastic wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil and repeat that 4 times, This will protect my NOOK from an EMP.

It occurs to me that B&N was probably going for a cloth-bound hardcover look with the 360 case (kind of duh now that I've thought of it, but others were a bit puzzled by the case material, too). Hardcovers, though, are generally covered by a dust jacket. I tried some dust jackets from my book shelves on for size and a few of them fit, but I think they would get shredded as the covered HD+ gets manhandled in and out of my bag, and aesthetically none of them grabbed me as something I wanted to always have with me.

That's when I remembered what we did with textbooks in elementary and high school--we would make really sturdy covers for them out of brown paper bags! They're rugged, easily replaceable, you can decorate them any way you like, and it's both more "Modern" and "Classic" (i.e. simple and inoffensive) than any of the available covers. The 360 case should accomodate such a jacket securely enough with no danger of roughing up the HD+ screen, so I'm going to give it a try :smileyhappy:

                                                          • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?

Wellllll... a brown bag cover gave me new appreciation for the soft texture of the naked 360 case, but I gave up too quickly on the dust jacket idea: the jacket from my copy of The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a near perfect fit! What cover could possibly be more appropriate for a device loaded with thousands of stories? It's a brilliant bit of synchronicity, as Campbell's mentor Jung would have it :smileywink:

For anyone who really wants to personalize, though, a paper cover is definitely an option on these cases with the rotating stand (offering space under the Nook to secure a flap), either with nicer paper or as a foundation for other material.

It's going for a Moleskine notebook look, judging from the pics.

For fine hand tooled leather that will outlast your device check out the oberon covers. I have two of them and love them.

My husband gave me an early Christmas gift of the purple Groovy Stand. I mostly love it. It needs a latch or elastic to keep it closed, I'm going to have to improvise something so it will be safe when I put it in my purse. I love how it folds into a stand but the way the cover goes into the clip thingy could have been done differently. When folded it easily slips out of the clip if bumped or moved such as when it is on my lap. Works great on a flat surface though. He also bought me the purple stylus to match and I LOVE it. It isn't perfect but it sure cuts down on fingerprints.

I like the way it feels and how light it is when it's cover free.

When I got the HD+ it was a no brainer. Right now I'm rocking a customized duct tape cover with my daughter's nature photography :-)

I have an Oberon cover for my NC.  It is visually lovely and pleasant to hold in the hand.  They've come out with a "universal" cover for larger tablets that would fit the HD+, but they weigh 14 ounces!  I couldn't see almost doubling the weight; to me, it would be defeating one of the prime plusses of the HD+, that of being the lightest in the field.  So I bought one of their large tablet sleeves.  It is simply beautiful.  It is also weel made, so it will be enduring; and  it will fit future tablets of this general size. They are made to order by an american company here in their workshop in California. To me, it was a worthy investment on many levels.  It protects my Nook, it is truly lovely, and when I use the Nook in its light weight simple form.

                                                                            • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?

                                                                                • Re: What are you covering your HD+'s with?

It's a little tricky to find them on their web site--I'd have missed them entirely were it not for my following them on Facebook.  The link is: https://oberon.gostorego.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=large+sleeves. I chose the Roof of Heaven in blue.  I really like the flexibility factor: when (as it inevitably will) the HD+ is obsolete, I can still use the sleeve.  The cover I have for my NC is truly gorgeous; now that I'm not using the NC as much, I the cover has no further function unless I can figure a way to adapt it to a notebook or something. Funny that I feel more of a loss in not using the cover than I do in not using the device!  I think it's because these covers feel like craft and not just technology. And, since they are pricey, it seems more like an investment than a sheer luxury.

I instead chose the red Jonathan Adler cover with the embossed pattern. I love this cover and I think I have figured out why. I still love the feel of having a book in my hands and this cover gives me that feeling. Maybe for people who are more inclined to have a smaller sleeker tablet the Groovy cover would be a better choice, but the Adler cover gives me a better feeling of more protection and the satisfaction of having a "book" in my hand.

For reading, I usually take it out of the Groovy and let it go nekkid. For this reason I'm considering the Oberon Big Tab Sleeve. I think the HD+ along with the Groovy cover might fit in that.
