Nook Simple Touch Update 1.1 available today (well maybe)!

Apparently it is online as being available, however, they seem to have forgotten the hyperlink on "click here"

Hopefully it is up later today.  I am looking forward to an update as I hope that it will fix some of the bugs that seem to be prevalent on most Nook Simple Touches.

          Hey all,

The link will be up shortly!

It seems as though the update will allow quicker page turns.  According to CNET and Endgadget, it will refresh at 450 ms compared to Kindles 600 ms.  Also, no browser still.  Still have the psuedo-one, that really is non-functional.

This text comes from the CNET live coverage of the unveiling this morning of the nook tablet.

I wonder what ongoing enhancements mean?  How can it be ongoing if it is a one time update?

              • Re: Nook Simple Touch Update 1.1 available today (well maybe)!

I certainly hope there is a whole lot more added than just 'quicker page turns'.

Shelving is unusable currently, and books purchased on the device can't use the storage card.

Well, I updated my Nook Touch and it still loses SD Card sideloaded books in shelves after a reboot.  ARGH!!!! This pretty much makes the shelf feature useless.  Why can't this get fixed?  I don't lose sideloaded books on my old 1st gen Nook if I reboot, so I would think it would be possible to have the newer Nooks remember the books on my shelves as well.

I can say I did not lose my shelves or any of my sideloaded books that were on shelves.  I don't use shelves that much anyway but the little bit I had set up stayed the way it was.

I don't believe your problem is typical unless mine working is the non-typical result... :smileywink:

I was able to get the new update onto my Nook.  Install was no problem.  I did notice the crisper fonts and the quicker page turns.  I also noticed that I had to re-shelve all of the books I have sideloaded onto my SD card.  And that they didn't change the way books have to be shelved.

It was mentioned earlier that the recommendation area of the Shop wasn't sized correctly, and that this might be something caused by the new update.  I usually buy most of my books on my phone or on my computer, but today I was at my local B&N with my Nook and noticed this same issue before I installed the update.  I'm still noticing it now.  I am unable to see the bottom portion of the rotating billboard.  To me, it looks like the whole thing either needs to be moved up about an inch, or the vertical sizing needs to be changed to see the entire billboard.  Oh, and the first screen of mine is also for Nook Color apps.

I was really, really hoping for a fix to the shelving issue.  That is the ONLY thing I was hoping for.  Oh well, maybe next time.

One thing I just thought to look at: I have a few books that have multiple levels in the table of contents.  They didn't show up correctly before, but the ones I've checked appear to now.

So did they not fix anything?  I'm going to download when I get home but is the simple stuff like 'don't say pre-order on something that's been out for six months and you've read' or 'no cover art because when you ordered it it didn't have it and it never updated' type of things not fixed?

                                    sheesh.

Yep, I'm seeing this issue with 1.0.1 also.  It looks like in addition to trying to give us the nook color update they're also giving us the nook color store marketing.  "About an inch" is right - it's sized perfectly for a 7-inch screen.

Alex - Can you please raise this issue?

Thanks for validating my incredible frustration--yes, this beast loses all my shelving of SD card books.  That is simply unacceptable.  I spoke to a guy at the store today who said he would consult corporate about whether a fix is or will be in the works.  Frankly, if it's not it's a deal breaker--it's going back and I'll use my gen 1 simple nook until they get this right.  It's pathetic software engineering.

                                    Updated successfully.

While the new screen contrast is very nice, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with B&N.  Does anyone from B&N read these posts?  There are many, many great suggestions here to improve the Nook and I can't see that any of them were addressed in this update. Are we all just wasting our time here?  :smileysad:

Time to look seriously into rooting.

After updating to version 1.1 the touchscreen no longer works.  I see the background image and the "drag to unlock bar" with its animated arrows but it is not possible to unlock the device by dragging a finger over the arrows.

They didn't fix the problem of the font size jump between 5 and 6 being to big.  That was the main thing a lot of us with older eyes wanted!

So glad my Kindle Touch will be here in 3 weeks.  What a shame.  That simple fix would have made the Nook ST perfect for me, but B&N just didn't listen to one of the major segments of the NST customer base

Does anyone know if there is any way to prevent the Nook from loading the new version?

Experience with the original Nook has taught me that the "improvements" aren't always desirable and often have unintended side effects.  I agree with many of the replies I've read here that the "improvements" are unnecessary and it would have been prefereable for B&N to fix the problems that exist (opening books randomly, the screen freezing, etc).

If anyone from B&N is reading this, it would be great if you added something to the download to allow us to confirm that we want the update before loading this.

I especially think this is important because if you look at most PC apps, you have to agree to the update before it can be downloaded.

I am especially leary of new versions of software after upgrading from the original Nook to the 2nd Edition Nook.  I looked at the list of updates before I bought it and was really excited.  I was sorry I spent the money from the first day I bought it.  The software is riddled with bugs that are easy to fix and no attempt has been made to fix them.  Examples are the 'Pre-order" banner that never goes away and the fact that when you sort the library by "Most Recent" you have to go looking for the book you were just reading because it is NEVER  at the beginning of the list.  Add to that the fact that the people answering the customer service line read from a script and no matter what problem you report step three is always 'De-register and re-register" your nook, which loses all the books you have downloaded and deletes your book shelves.

After dininer, I took one of my friends to B & N to check out the Simple Touch "with" the Update 1.1.

I wanted to see just how much crispier the letters are, and how faster the pages turn before I go ahead with the update.

Well, the very first thing I did was to check the software version on the Simple Touch, and to my disappointment, it still had the out-dated version.

So I started asking this "Nook" guy on the other side of the counter, and he started saying that the update was not available yet. I politely replied that there was an "announcement" today and that there "was" an update available on B & N. He "confidently" started explaining that the software will be available and installed on a "rolling" basis, so the Simple Touch "with the update" will be eventually available.

Man, I could have asked him why he doesn't just update it manually, but honestly, I didn't have a heart to tell him I knew more about Nooks than he did. :smileywink:

                                            I guess I'm a real Nookie.

Even last Saturday, I was at a local Bestbuy to check out the Kindle. I was playing around with it when this smart-lookin' BB salesperson approached me and asked if I needed any help. I told him I already had a NC and ST, but just wanted to see how Kindle was. "HE" started asking me about Nook (i.e. free Fridays, lend me functions, etc.) Then, all of a sudden, a customer (mother & daughter) approached us and I somehow helped this salesperson to sell a ST to them!!

I should get a commission for this sale~ puhaha

Anyway, that was the first time I was called a Nookie, and I loved it :smileytongue:

I just installed the new 1.1 firmware, and I have several sideloaded ebooks from O'Reilly which only briefly flash something when I tap on the center of the book and select "more...", instead of showing information about the ebook, like the location.  I have another sideloaded book that I'm currently reading, and "more..." works for it.  I still wish that the "more..." would display the <dc:description> value from a sideloaded ebook.

I am glad to see that they improved the Table of Contents so that they include all the nested levels instead of just the top level. However, I think that the font is too big and there is too much white space, and it would be nice if there was some indenting to show the nesting level.  Maybe the TOC could use the same font/font size as the book?

It wasn´t a major bother, but for the fact of seeing lines of text when the screensaver (mostly white) kicked in. But now it is perfect. Thank you BN, thank you, thank you :smileyhappy:
