Nook Color Web Browser no pinch to zoom, why?

I hope its a limitatation of the browser and the pinch to zoom will be added in an update.

I know its an eReader 1st, but I plan on using this as an online article reader as well.  Pinch to zoom on a web page is needed when the ads are cramping half the screen.

why is pinch to zoom required?  double tap to zoom also works.

Double tap on Nook Colors "browser" will zoom?  Latest review says no Pinch to Zoom in the browser.

I have absolutely no idea why.   But would guess that with all the lawsuits going round on "look and feel" and "intellectula property" and so forth, the designers well could have opted NOT to put that feature in until licensing and/or copyrights and/or the technology was ready for this particular device.

From page 20 of the NOOKcolor User Guide:

                Pinch to Zoom

You can use two fingers to shrink or enlarge a book cover or a photo.

Pinch your fingers together to shrink an image and zoom out.  Pull your fingers apart to enlarge an image and zoom in.

(Pulling your fingers apart this way is sometimes called "pinching out.")

                  Also, from page 62...

NOOKcolor Zooming In and Out on a Web Page

To zoom in on a region on a Web page, tap twice quickly.  Once you have zoomed in, you can swipe left, right, up, or down to move about the page.

When you move around the page, a pair of magnifying glass icons appears in the lower left corner of the screen.  Tap the magnifying glass with a plus sign (+) to zoom in further.  Tap the magnifying glass with a minus sign (-) to zoom out.  You can also zoom out by tapping twice.

I know you have been answered (nook zooms using a different method), but I thought this article was interesting:

"Boom: Apple was just awarded a patent on pinch-to-zoom for multitouch displays..."

                        http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/13/apple-awarded-limited-patent-on-pinch-to-zoom/

A recent flood of gesture, style, and software based patents have made a lot of manufacturers nervous.

That's one heck of a confusing article. :smileytongue:

So, Apple doesn't have a patent on the single "pinch-to-zoom" gesture, but instead have a patent on the chaining of "pinch-to-zoom" and other multitouch gestures? lol.

I'm taking that to mean "pinch-to-zoom" is OK, but rotating a pic through gesture and THEN pinching to zoom is not... OK.............

the pinch to zoom feature is shown in the video for the nook color on the B&N site as well as in the instruction manual. It is a feature that many people want. on my nook color-the double tap does not work well and zooms in and then out immediately-therefore is useless.

i am finding this to be a big problem and hope the update that is coming soon will correct this - otherwise i will have to return this and purchase something else.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated/

If it is zooming out again instantly then you are tapping too many times or too hard or some such thing. Mine does not zoom in and then out right away.   I personally prefer the tap to zoom, but know others think that anything other than pinch is so not i-like.  Tap works very well actually, but it's possible that in future updates users will have a choice.  I can tap or pinch on my iphone and tap only requires one finger hit the screen correctly whereas pinch requires 2 and I often make mistakes with the pinch.

Sad that a choice is determined on pinch alone.  I am currently working on a patent for the blow a kiss to zoom feature for my part.

I just received a Nook Color for my birthday.  It did not come with the pinch to zoom installed, but according to the article from CNET, there is an update to provide the functionality.  I am going to try to do the update in the next day or so (if it doesn't autmatically download to my Nook before I get around to it).
