    Picked Just for You

How do I remove certain genres of books from the "Picked Just for You" feature of BN online on my Color Nook?
        • Re: Picked Just for You

This is something I would like to know as well.  I usually read historical fiction, and just this once read a romance.  Now I keep getting all these romance recomendations.  I really love when they recomend books, so I want them to focus on the books I really like!

I don't believe these books are chosen for me. Every time I look at it, there is nothing there I would read. Can we get a confirmation that these are really chosen based on our purchasing history? Does downloading the free books skew these "picks"?

yeah based on the books I buy, the books they pick for me are NOTHING like that. There have been some racey covered ones on my "just picked" for you. Its not a big deal, but if any one looking would see those, it would seem like I read those type. Again, not really a big deal, but I don't know why they do that????

I suspect the "Picked Just For You" choices are based on a number of things from the site and Store, like your purchase history, your browsing history, your search history, any Free Fridays books you've ever downloaded, and maybe, just maybe, they could even base it on your web browser(s) cookies and what sites you've visited.  :smileysurprised:

Are they that nefarious?  I dunno.  The proof is left as an exercise for the student.

I don't think that's how it works because I've purchased a lot of a specific genre and it suggests romance novels (which I do not like or purchase) and self help books (again I don't like or read these) and wedding books (don't get these either).  I wonder if there are some basic assumptions that are factored in as well like I'm a certain age and female so I must be interested in romance novels and getting married.  My favorite is when it actually does suggest something I would read, except that I've already purchased it as a nookbook through B&N.  It's like they aren't even paying attention to my shopping history at all...

I wish there was a way to check off books that I already own or like so that this could become more personalized (like Netflix and Amazon have on their sites).  I'm interested in getting suggested books, but I want them to actually be relevant and not just mindless marketing.

What ever method they are using is flawed. It seems to pick a book at random or recently bought (but not necessarily the last one) and uses that one title to pick from. It should at least look at more than one non free purchase and pick the average genre.

Also, I've noticed that many of the books they picked "just for me" are DTB's I've already purchased from a bricks and mortar B&N (using my membership, so they definitely know I bought them).  It would be nice if they not only improved the process, but also merged their information on us to reflect the whole picture.

I honestly don't care that much, since I don't generally shop for books from their recommendations.

Well, I downloaded the Free Friday retirement book yesterday, and today there are three....three books about retirement "Picked Just for You" shown in my shop.  I never before have shown an interest in such books.

I wish there was a way to choose the genre of book suggestions and a way to remove certain genres chosen just for me, but there isn't. I bought one mystery book, and now it's filled with mystery books.  Sometimes I don't even bother looking there anymore except to see what the Free Friday book is.

Yup! Same thing happened to me. From a marketing perspective, the algorithims behind "Picked Just for You" are a big fail. BUT if you view "Picked Just for You" as a FREE GAME, it can be pretty entertaining --- the purpose of the game is to list all the possible genres your "Picked" book could fall under and corrolate it back to something you have actually purchased.  Unfortunately, it looks like "chick lit" can encompass almost anything these days!

{Note: Does anybody know, does B&N select the genres a book falls under or is it the publisher?

BN should set up recommendations like Amazon does-you can click on books you already have and those you are not interested in.

Ugh this happened to me. My older sister decided to mess with me and she bought a free erotica book. Just one. And i deleted it as soon as i found it. ( i put a lock on my nook now). Well every time i see the picked just for you its full of erotica. Never mind that all i ever buy are classic literature books. Like pride and prejudice or wuthring heights, gullivers travels etc. All they ever suggest to me is erotica. And it grosses me out. There has got to be some perverted man with access to my nook files who works for the site who suggests more ridiculous ones than the last everytime. The kicker was today right at the front of the column was "Adventures in a glorious hole". Yea. Mhhm. I could smack barnes and noble.
