Just got our NookColor, and it's great!  I'm a technie and could root but I don't want to..I'll wait for B&N official updates to simplify life.

It's actually a NC for my son, who is 12.  So I agree with many other suggestions and but could not read this entire thread.  My one suggestion is to have some way to prevent erotica -classified material to be purchased in the Nook store.  I'll handle the web browser parental protection through our home network, that's fine.

          • 122. Re: What users want in the NOOKcolor 1.1 update

I am fairly happy with my Nookcolor, but in the overall scheme of things I do not like the fact that they lock down the desktop with "purchased content only".

"Keep all your top titles ready to read right on your home screen. Whether it's the book you're currently reading, a favorite magazine, your daily newspaper, or the picture book your child loves, just drag and drop the covers on to the home page. They'll be there waiting for you every time you reach for your NOOKcolor!"

A quote directly from the promo page that advertises the nook on the B&N site. "KEEP ALL YOUR TOP TITLES" sticks out to me. I have several books that I have that I added to a custom shelf, but now have an empty homescreen except for 2-3 books that I purchased a while ago. Its going to be a huge problem with the market with these. Just imagine if apple had an a Policy to only allow apple apps on the homescreen and you had to open menu's to access third party ebooks. Nobody is going to be happy about that. I do high end IT consulting on a daily basis, have set up several ipads for people, had the opperatunity to operate nooks, motion computing 3k$ tablet pcs, home theater integration and many other very interesting (at least to me :smileyvery-happy:) takes on the world of personal electronics and office effieciency tools. As far as the app store, It would be nice, but it might create problems w/the performance barrier, as some Android devices have a signifigantly more powerful processor. Although, Cruz Micro has a customized store that allows certain apps that they offer : office/media/games etc, might be a good idea, and allow for placement of shortcuts on the home screen instead of just books.

All and all, it's a decent product, but it could be a Great product. God knows B&N wants to drive a stake in the heart of kindles/sony pocket readers/ipads worldwide, and coming to terms with the customer base might be a step in that direction.

            Thanks for Consideration,

            Will A.

I've seen some other ideas and suggestions here that I'd like. Here are some I've not seen.

arrow keys on the keyboard -

my fat fingers can only get me so close the the letter or section of a line I want to edit, then I'm left to keep trying or delete letters to get the cursor where I need it.

an app for taking notes -

nothing too fancy here but if I'm not near a wi-fi and I need to jot some notes, the only option I've found is to open a book and drop the note there even though it has nothing to do with that book

ability to adjust the touch screen settings -

would like to adjust the timing for a the various touches to access the menus

                1) For the "Nook for PC"

-Labels upon scrolling over icons. (I have no idea what the "refresh" icon is synchronizing with)

                -User Guide links to

-Within the "Settings" tab, provide a function to allow automatic synchronization.

-A delete function for sample books and/or all items.

-Allow a function to permit viewing of all files on the nook or nookcolor through the Nook for PC program.

                2) Nook/Nook Color

                - A delete feature

                -A sync feature

-Remove the sleep feature (if I get a drink from the refrigerator, I shouldn’t come back to a black screen)

-Remove or allow skip the forced wireless connection upon initial startup.

Ability to get detailed technical error messages when errors occur.

Would really like to see some graphic novels make an appearance on the NOOKcolor.  Some of the essentials like Sin City, Watchmen, Ghost World, V for Vendetta, etc.  Also more of the classics, like how about a single collection of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  And where are some of the classics that Barnes and Noble claims are in their Nook Book library?  Where's Sylvia Plath and Truman Capote?  Where's Sherman Alexie?

Had my nookcolor for about three days, early birthday gift from GF : -). I'm more than certain that I see a proximity sensor near the nook button, is there an autobrightness? If not, that's my wish until I see what 2011 brings!
                        • 130. Re: What users want in the NOOKcolor 1.1 update

I'm not sure if it would even be possible, but the main thing I would like to see is the ability to dim the backlight further (it is still too bright in very low/no light situations, and I am not a fan of the night mode).  That being said, I am not sure if there are enough people out there that would appreciate this as much as I would for it to be worth while.  Other than that, other page display options would be nice (actual pages according to font/format, pages left in chapter, etc..).

I have been using an iPad as an ereader since they came out and if it weren't for the brightness issue at night I would never use it again.  These are definitely the best thing out there..thanks for a great ereader.

                                • 134. Re: What users want in the NOOKcolor 1.1 update

I have had mine now for 2 days, and I enjoy it greatly (I also have a 3G Nook).  The UI is quite nice for the most part, but it needs a few tweaks:

                                  1) PDF handling needs an option to render text only with controllable margins & reflow ability.  PDFs on the NC render beter than on the classic nook in many ways, since the NC renders pdf pages as intended, and allows pan/zoom.  While that's usually a good thing, sometimes I just want to read the text, and the pdf rendering should give you a choice to use the basic ereader functionality instead when you want to.  Doing so would solve the problems of large margins (small text) and slow page turns.  Again, this should be an option, as some PDFs are better one way and others the other way.

                                  2) Agree with the other posts that we should be able to put a wide variety of content/shortcuts on the home screen, especially sideloaded books, but also web favorites, games, music playlists, etc.

                                  3) Daily shelf is not so useful to me.  I would like to turn it off and just use the home screen or library views instead.

                                  4) Library views should show cover art if it's included in the file for all files, not just B&N content.

                                  5) Battery status (icon + percentage) and access to the full settings menu (option) from the Quick Settings dialog box.

                                  6) Persistent and consistent access to previous screen (Back).  The status bar R->L swipe sometimes takes you back to the home screen and sometimes to a previous app/screen, but not always to the same one.  The action should be consistent.  Also, when viewing an internal ebook link (such as a footnote/endnote), a back button shows up on the top of the page, but only briefly, then disappears, after which there is no way to return to the page you were on(!)  There should be persistent access to the last-viewed page/screen/app/function frmo anywhere in the system.

                                  7) Shortcut to content (TOC) on the bottom Status Bar.

                                  8) Also, TOC should show lower level links (subchapters or chapters in addition to parts).  This is not as big a deal for the NC as for the classic nook, which used to show all levels until the 1.5 update, since the actual TOC page in the NC usually lets you touch a link to get to any internal segment, but it would be nice to do it through the content menu.
