manual nooter style HD+ rooting very close

    roustabout

The 2.0.5 update from BN ramped up the dev community's speed on getting a solid and by happy coincidence simple set of techniques for rooting the stock OS moving.  Whethere intentional or not, the process used for rooting stopped running, so the XDA elves, particularly leapinlar and someone1 got right on fixing it.

Within, I think, 24 hours there was a flashable and prerooted release of the OS available, using 2.0.0 (the shipped OS) and a modified build.prop to block updates.

Sometime today a universal rooting tool was released which, at least so far, will root any HD+ release it's applied to.  This can be applied along with a second tool which allows installation of unsigned apps and a third which installs the Android market.  It's fast and nice work, although it's not quite sewn up in a bundle yet, the process is very similar to what NC owners were used to:

      - make a special card

      - put some zip files on the card

      - boot from the card and install the zip files

      - reboot, choose a launcher, and have the best of both worlds.

So the process has gone from "you can do it, but you need to get ADB working reliably on your computer and talking to your HD+" to "if you can make the card, you can root your device."

Blocking the OTA updates is still very much a work in progress. Have a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 for more of the skinny.

Ok, I must be missing something, e.g. do I need to have my Nook HD viewable via adb or something?

I flashed my SD 4gb SD Card with NookHD+bootable-CWM-6023-for-emmc-stock-4GB, loaded the other two zips and booted my HD.  It booted as normal.  So, I re-booted, no difference.  After 8 +/- re-boots my HD still boots to the Nook OS.

            Any suggestions?

            EDIT - I'm on 2.0.5.

That was my first impression too...that it had not worked. However, go into your settings/applications and you should see the additional apps. Once I saw those, I exited the settings and hit the N button and the launcher menu popped up with the usual "home" or "zeam launcher". I hit zeam launcher to get into the android area. It took about 15 min or so before the app market came up, but once I got signed into google and it updated to google play, all was good.

It is confusing as I am using to seeing the android logo upon boot up on my NC and there was really no such item to let me know I had succeeded or not when it booted up.

Interesting, the Nook HD added folders to my SD card - B&N Downloads, LOST.DIR and My Files.

I did not load Gapps+Extras; but I have now.  So, I have deleted the Nook folders noted above so, on my SD Card I have:

                u-boot.bin

                kernal

                MLO

                ramdisk

                uImage

                Plus the following zips:

                NookHD-HDplus-ManualOTA+UnknownSources

                NookHD-HDplus-Universal-Root

                NookHD-HDplus-Gapps+Extras

As additional info, I've used on 30.2mb of the 4gb SD disk...

Same results, the Nook boots as normal...it does not boot from the SD Card.

I'm going to try a 2gb SD card...I've only had the HD a couple of days and haven't read all the boards stuff yet; but I have been keeping track LeapinLar and someone0 et al on XDA for several weeks.

I'll let you know what happens...thanks!

You used Win32DiskImager to flash the NookHD+bootable-CWM-6023-for-emmc-stock-4GB.img to your sd card first right?

Well, needless to say trying to image a 3+ gb file onto a 2gb SD card bombed.

So, I re-formatted the SD card (4gb SanDisk; no class listed, but it's the same type card the worked with the Nook Color through 4 upgrades) and re-imaged and coped the .zip files and my HD just booted the same as if no SD card was inserted.

Very strange.  Thinking about reverting back to stock, and starting 'fresh'...

Yes sir, Win32DiskImager to flash the NookHD+bootable-CWM-6023-for-emmc-stock-4GB image then drage and drop the zip files onto the card.

I think it's my SD card.  It's a SanDisk HC; I couldn't find a 'class' on it but knew it worked with my NC.  I'll go  somewhere tomorrow and get a class 10.

However, I did copy a simple video and the HD read it and played it, so I know the card 'works'.

There's a thread on xda where everyone is posting work/not work on various SD cards.

Ok, around midnight last night LeapinLar posted the CWM for the HD.

So, I'm rooted now.  Just getting used to the HD UI versus my old and comfortable Nook Color UI...

Update - Everything working fine, but I seem to have 'limited visibility' in the store.  I can't find 'Google Maps' and 'Google Earth' gives me the message "Your device isn't compatible with this version".

                          Anyone else having this issue?

After taking kids skating/burning energy, I'll probably manually reset and root again clean.

PS - As a noob, I'm not allowed to post on the XDA-HD/HD+ developer forum and there appears to be no similar thread on the General forum.
