Which SD Card Should I Get?

      Hi,

This is my first posting, although I've been reading it since I got my NK color, and have found it very useful. I wanted to post something but decided asking about the update would just annoy people. :smileyhappy:

I recently started using DVD Catalyst to load movies on my NK (A great program by the way, thanks to those that recommended it here!), and am now running out of storage on my NK.

Can anyone recommend a good SD card, for a reasonable price? Is there a limit to the capacity the NK will support, or can I get any size? How about brands? Have you had luck with a particular one, or are there ones to be avoided?

      Thanks in advance.

      Bruce

The brand probably doesn't matter, but make sure you get the micro SD card,

          not an SD card...

Hi brucer42, You can install an SD Memory Card in your NOOK Color to add up to 32 GB of memory to your NOOK Color—enough for many thousand more books, along with periodicals, music, and personal files.

            Types of Memory Cards Supported

Your NOOK Color works with two types of SD Memory Cards: a microSD™ or microSDHC™ card.

Supplemental microSDHC cards will hold about 1000 NOOKbooks per gigabyte. The amount of space for NOOK Books is affected by how much space you devote to other files, such as music and audiobooks.

Following are the specifications of supported cards:

            • A microSDHC card with a storage capacity of up to 32 GB.

            • Class 6 microSDHC cards are supported. Class 6 is faster than class 4, which is faster than class 2. The class should be mentioned on the packaging for the microSDHC card and printed on the card itself. If no speed is indicated, the card is a class 2 card. The speed of the card does not affect page display speeds. It can affect read and write speeds when transferring books, periodicals, and personal files to and from the SD card.

            • The microSDHC card must be formatted with a FAT32 file system.

Hi CeCe... I read your post with great interest. I just started using catalyst 4 with my NC and love the shows I've downloaded to my Nook.  I would like to use a SD card, but know nothing about them except what you wrote.

You said "The microSDHC card must be formatted with a FAT32 file system." I don't know what a FAT32 file system is.  So can I avoid that by using a micro SD card?  I looked at some of them in the store, and the package said it came with an adapter.  Do I need this adapter for the NC?  And how do I actually get the tv shows, thru catalyst, onto the card? Do I put it directly on the NC and then go to my computer to drag it to the SD card?  Could you walk a compete novice through the process please!  Thank you so much...

I use PNY micro sd's, 4gb. Class 4, I think. I haven't had a problem at all. Make sure that you buy the sd with an adapter (all in the same package). You're going to need the adapter to put movies, pics, etc. on your NC from your laptop or PC.

                  Hi Bruce,

First post for me also. I hope you love your Nook Color as much as I love mine!

If your intention is to Root your Nook Color (install Andorid Honeycomb or another version of Android), then you want to purchase the fastest Micro SD card you can with a SD card adaptor as well. A class 6 six card is what Nook Devs suggest. If you are going to store books only, then a lower class card will work fine.

amazon.com has some great prices on Micro SD cards, you may want to check them out.

Any brand is fine, pick one up from Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, OfficeMax or wherever.   Make sure it is a microSD card.    The NC supports up to a 32GB card and it can be any class.   Class refers to write speed, NOT read speed.   While a slower class card may take longer to write that one GB file a video will be, it's not important because for each movie, you only do it once.    So if it takes 5 minutes rather than 3 minutes....it's not a biggie.

On playback....where the NC reads the card....that's the important part, and to be honest, the data rates for viewing a video work just fine on just about any microSD card.

The manual says the NC supports a class 6 card.   That simply means that if you buy a class 10 card (they're more expensive) you're wasting your money, because while it will work just fine, the NC can't feed data to it fast enough to "need" teh higher write speed.
