OH WHAT A PAIN  to get this Nook to finally work!!!(hours and hours and hours)  kept saying not activated....so after reading thru your great post.  I realized the acsm file  had to be turnedon in my computer, so went thru your steps in the "If you don not have the option of always use ADE to download the following steps will allow you to opt in for this"..........I,also, went to the control panel and in the lower left hand corner clicked on "turn Windows features on and off" in the window that popped up I checked "windows process activation service",   so not sure which one worked, but FINALLY was able to successfully download into the Nook,my books that were downloaded into the ADE, so went to the library again, checked out another book and it downloaded into the ADE, plugged in the Nook and it too successfully downloaded into the NOOK...(((HALLELUJAH,  praise the Lord!!!!!.)))).

just hope they come up with a much simplier way to get the library section activated for the new NOOK users...

        this is what I did.......

        1.  Go to Barnes and Noble  and set up an account (email address and password)

        2.  Fully charge (about 4hrs) then register your Nook (using the same info as on the B and N acct so they can charge your account for any products you buy (they have to be able to talk to each other)

        3.  Call your library and see what www. program you need to access the library

        4.  So the the Adobe website and set up an  account and Download Adobe Digital Editions plus any other  softwear the library requires (I, also, downloaded...Adobe Reader, Overdrive media console, Adobe flash driver--maybe that is overkill)

        5.  In the "setting" on the Nook...(slide the lower section to the right) fill out that registration too, I set all four of these the same...email address and password

Be sure the acsm file  in your computer is turned on

1.Go to your librarys web site and select a book (besure it is in the  kind format you want, for me it is the epub books) and  check it out and "download" and it will go into your Adobe Digital Editions file on your computer , either in your "my documents" or on the desktop.....(((on this black ADE screen at the top where it says "library", the screen drops down and says "authorize computer"...click "finish"(I do this for each book)...I don't know if it does anything, but makes me feel better..!!!!!!

PLUG IN YOUR NOOK and open the ADE(Adobe Digital Editions) (on your desktop or in My documents) the black screen with your books listed on it

the Nook icon shoulds show on the left side ,,, click on the desired book and   hold the left side of the mouse down and drag it over to the Nook icon and release the mouse, it should immediately be in the Nook

2.Now  Unplug  UBS cord from the Nook.....

        3.  Turn on your Nook and select  "My library".   The book should be in here, scroll up or down and select, click on the book and it should open to the book cover,  so now you can read and enjoy.  Next time you open your Nook go  to "reading now" and it should be on the page that you left.

I sure hope this helps someone along their journey!!!

B&N is pretty much at the mercy of the libraries and ADE.   It's not really something they have control over.

2.Now  Unplug  UBS cord from the Nook.....

Make sure you properly eject the Nook before disconnecting from the computer.  You do this by right mouse clicking on the nook drive in Windows Explorer and select eject.  The  nook will exit out of USB mode and will return to the  normal screen.  If you don't you run the risk of the computer not recognizing the Nook the next time you try and connect it and I've had flash drives corrupted when they weren't ejected properly, I don't know if this could happen with the Nook or not, but I wouldn't chance it just to avoid a couple of clicks.

I can't download onto Nook color using ADE.  I have authorized ADE under my email ID that I used with Adobe. I have done all the steps and ADE doesn't allow me to authorize the Nook.  No device assistant shows up. I can see the Nook device in ADE. When I download ebook from BN it comes as a epub file.  When I transfer to ADE, it says "document is licensed for another user." My BN user email is different, but it says that the emails don't have to match.  Help.  I can't even get the books to download via internet. It says processing. It has been processing for over 24 hours. I have tried syncing and everything.

Look, it's really simple. Do not use ADE for books from B&N. Reread the title of this thread. ADE is NOT for B&N books.

You are a Godsend, FrogAlum!! Your ADE directions worked like a charm once I unhooked USB cable and reconnected. Thanks so much - now I can "go forth and read!"

@Wmje : : Your only bad luck was that you tried two operating systems that hide files and folders that begin with a period. So on either computer turn on the option to show hidden files. It will probably be an option on the view sub menu of your file manager.

Any suggestions on how to do this on a mac? I have looked all over the menus in Finder and searched on it in help (only thing they say about hidden files is that you will be able to see them on a Windows...nothing about how to see them on the mac).

Having trouble with user not authorized but can't fund the .adobe-digital-editions folder to delete as recommended.

                  Thanks

OMG... Thank you!  I was about to throw this nook away.  I received the for Christmas and was so excited because I learned that I could borrow eBooks from the library. I reached out to Tech Support and was given the same instructions, which I followed to the letter, but was unable to connect my nook to ADE.  Finally in frustration this morning decided to seek help once again, because I was sure I could not be the only one having this much difficulty.  Lo and behold, I found out I was not the only one caught in this quagmire of frustration. I deleted ADE from my nook and computer and reinstalled/downloaded it again, and wuhlah it said the magic words "authorize this device."  I finally saw the "nook" icon in ADE on the left side of my screen. Thank you! It's 3:44AM and I'm jumping up and down!

Just bought my Nook today, and immediately borrowed an ebook from my local library. It's in Adobe PDF format, so I downloaded ADE. Authorized the computer, authorized the Nook, no problem, dragged the file onto the Nook, again no problem. However, when I attempt to open the file in my Nook, all I get is a screen saying "User not activated." Not sure if I missed a step somewhere, but I have no trouble reading the book in ADE, and the file shows up on my Nook. Help?

Read post 81 in this very same thread.  Its on page 5.

Acck... I can get to the point where I have moved the borrowed book over to the Nook icon and I can see in ADE that it is copied to my nook, but-------when I look on the Nook itself after ejecting it from my computer (mac)  I don't see the book.

                          • 55. Re: Using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) - Library Books and Vendors other than B&N.

Thanks, Frog, for ALL of your help.  I find ADE to be the most archaic software in existence, reminiscent of writing computer programs in Basic and Assembly long before PC's...no one here will remember that!

First off, is there any software to buy that replaces ADE?  especially for library books?

My newest problem is with too many authorized devices on ADE.  I really have only 1 computer and 2 readers, but both of the latter have been replaced and I had another ereader for a few days, so my huge quota of 6 is used up.  On many Adobe boards, they say Adobe never helps them, with this common issue or any other issue, and that it does no good to de-authorize a defunct ereader.  I have proved that true - it does not open up a new spot.

Since they apparently cannot fix the latter, and seem to have no interest in increasing the number of authorizable devices, do you have any suggestions?  I am sitting here with my latest new Nook and can access none of my library books.  I de-authorized my sick Nook, trying to clear out a coveted space, so have lost everything there as well.  I assume it would be the same disaster I had a boatload of expensive purchased books in there.  Argh!

Sorry post is so long.  After so many hours of searching for a solution, I'm a bit blurry eyed!  Thanks so much!  P.S.  I see this problem worsening, as I get more ereaders in the future, or have problems with my current ones.  It is a crying shame that ADE can ruin the entire ereading experience.  Kindest regards.

Regardless of what random users on the adobe boards say, adobe will give you extra activations if you email their support and explain the situation.  It takes about a day.  MANY people on these boards have done it.

No, ADE is currently the only software that Overdrive uses for library books.  As the pp said, if you send Adobe an email they will increase the activiations.  It's happened to a number of people who

have reported no real issue with getting additional activiations.

Personally, the only issue I have with ADE is when I connect my Nook, it is pretty much frozen for what seems like forever.  I believe it is trying to read all the books on the Nook at that time, and since it can't recognize B&N books, it gets stuck, or it just takes a while to read and catalog them all, not sure.  I just plug it in and then do something else for 5 minutes or so.

Can I transfer books from the sony reader library that were purchased to my nook color.  I put them on my sd card but when I try to read it tells me user not activated.  I have the reader registered and setup?

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been posting on this forum.  I also had the "user not activated" error when I tried to open any lirbrary books in my documents and I was getting very frustrated. In the end all I had to do was delete the adobe.digital.editions folder in windows explorer, reregister my nook with ADE, and drag and replace the books I was trying to open and all was well.  I would never have figured it out on my own so thank you!!!
