Hmm, I've been toying with the menus and while I do prefer the soft menu button, I did notice that there is still soft access to the many of the features. If you enable "Media Shortcuts", then a new tab will be shown at the bottom of the home page. I'd noticed this before, but I thought it was just for shopping (if you go to 'books' it shows you books you can buy and so on). It's actually pretty useful and the only function you still need to press the 'n' button for is web access. There's also a "back" function that many have pointed out. If you swipe leftward on the center of the bottom black bar, then it will take you back to the previous screen all the way to "home". It takes some getting used to but the functionality is there.

...Everything I said about the wallpaper issue still stands. Someone should fix that, but I'm still in love with this device.:manhappy:

Is anyone else having these issues? 1. When trying to add books to My Shelves it doesn't give me an option to select the shelves I have already created. The prompt says, Select Shelves, but doesn't show anything. The only optiong would be to add a new shelve. 2. The new enchanced magazines such as People, Real Simple and Better Homes & Gardens do not allow me to bookmark anything. I have chatted with the BN Nook customer service who told me to reset my device to fix this, which I did, but no bookmarking option is showing up. Any suggestions on these two topics? I am going to redownload the 1.4 update and will see if this fixes the shelved, but am really not digging the enchanced magazines as I want to bookmark pages.

I can't say anything for the enhanced magazine, Tiki (my sample of National Geographic works great. Does that count?), but my shelves are working just fine. That tells me the shelf issue isn't an update problem. Might have to keep trying with support. Good luck.

Is bookmarking one of the new updates? That would be great! I just tried it on the People magazine and it doesn't work...and I'm on the 1.4.1 update.

Also, if you figure out a way to reapply the 1.4.1 update, I would greatly appreciate it if you would share how to do it. I want to do that, as well, and haven't figured out how...without first reseting back to the stock OS.

Power off, then on (don't put it to sleep). This will fix it. This was an existing bug from before the update.

the only thing I can suggest is that you check your online account at the B&N website, and see if the expiration date of your CC is correct, and hasn't elapsed.  May have nothing to do with it, but worth checking.

Oh, you said "available".  So you wanted to know what's in that list.  :smileysurprised:  B&N isn't releasing it, because it's confidential information.  :smileyvery-happy:

Either that, or B&N decided to mix in an Easter Egg hunt with the Christmas festivities.  :smileywink:

well yes, the mechanical n button is annoying but I can get used to if since I have to.

I MISS the swiping and cant find what ppl are talking about swiping left.

also to close a book I now have to press the mechanical N button AND the home button. its not much but cumbersome and does not seem like an improvement.

I keep playing with it but so far I am not all that impressed. prefer the touch screen and double tap over the n button any day.

This was recorded on a stock NC long before this update, but it works the same way on the same status bar, even without the menu softkey there.

1.4.1 will not install. Downloaded and moved to device several times.  removed. Tried again.

Your phone support (the worst I've encountered in quite some time) suggested that I deregister and re-register.  The online chat person, however, says the version is buggy and you are working on a fix so it will install.

                        Which is right?

I was hoping that B&N would understand that having two different product lines with the same versioning, will lean to a signficant amount of confusion, even (gasp!) within B&N customer support.  They could have used even-numbered minor revision numbers for the NT and odd-numbered minor revision numbers for the NC, and that would have at least provided some protection against confusion.  Alas, we now have identical version numbers for two related products.

Too much to hope for, from new entrants into a 40-year-old industry, I guess.

                          Edit: Editing a three-year-old message ...

I am not comfortable with side-loading, as I've never tried it ... so here I am waiting.

I'm not sure if there is an issue with people's files getting corrupted during download or transfer or if people are dropping the zip file in the wrong place, but I have done the 1.4 update on two Nooks without error, so it can be done and I suspect something screwey is going on during some stage of download/transfer for people who are having issues.  (I know it would frustrate me, so I sympathize.)  The error may not be on B&N's end, so people shouldn't automatically get into attack mode if a problem arises.

I say this and I honestly don't want to sound like I am belittling anyone who has had an issue--just pointing out that we need to investigate beyond blaming B&N.  (And maybe it is a screwup on their part.)  But, I gave my 12 yr old a NC for Christmas this past Saturday.  Within a half hour he had wandered off, gotten onto his grandparents' computer, and side-loaded the 1.4 update and had his Nook Color up and running it.

If you live near a B&N store, the Nook dude/lady will do the update for you.

I'm not very happy with the "enhanced shop experience" touted by 1.4.1. I now have a bar at the bottom of my home screen that I can't remove. Oh I've removed the little icons that make it fast to reach the B&N market place, but the white bar remains and I'm not happy! B & N's greed for a sale is now intruding on my user experience. At least Kindle users had the option to purchase a model at a reduced price if they didn't mind the ad's, B & N did not give me the same choice. I'm also finding that my device now "suggests" items I might like to buy.

To clear the little shortcuts from the bottom of your home screen:

                              Choose:

                              Settings

                              App settings

                              Home

under General Home Settings, find Media Shortcuts and uncheck the box next to it.

Now all that will remain on your home screen is a white bar at the bottom.

It's your daily shelf, not a bar.

The very same thing happened to me after I upgraded to 1.4: There is an ugly white bar at the bottom of the screen and I cannot find a way to remove it. This is definitely not the daily shelf.

If I choose to make the media shortcuts visible, this white bar will be right above the shortcuts.

It looks like a bug to me. Not a big deal, but still annoying.

On an unrelated note, it would be nice if B&N's community forums were optimized to work with the Nook's browser.
