I'm now on my second Nook Simple Touch, and I've fully confirmed that the 1.1.0 firmware does NOT allow you to connect via encrypted WiFi if your router is the Verizon FIOS Actiontec router. It even won't connect if you use a different wireless gateway that points to the Actiontec router.
After spending a few hours on the phone with Tier 2 BN support, they confirmed that they know about this issue and are working on a fix. It would have been nice if they alerted customers to this earlier.
So, if you use Verizon FIOS at home, and have your wireless network secured (encrypted), don't update to 1.1.0 yet. You won't be able to use Wifi at home (unless you make the wireless network open)
You're making a general statement. I use WEP on my Verizon Actiontec and have absolutely no problems connecting to it with my N2E after the update. After seeing all these messages I've tested a number of times and, if anything, I connect faster than I did before the update.
It apparently depends on which revision of the Actiontec M1424WR router you have been given. Verizon has issued Revisions A-I of that router.
Revision F is known to have a problem. Other than one member with Revision C, no one using that router model and who didn't have a problem has reported their router's Revision letter.
Did you try the router settings described in this thread?
If that doesn't work you could try DMZ hosting for your nook. DMZ hosting sets your nook outside the router's firewall. Instructions for this can be found on the Actiontec site's FAQ for your model and Revision letter.
So, in short, the "discovery" that you've made is one that we've become aware of ourselves over the past week, and have found a work-around that works for nearly everyone who tries it. While your enthusiasm is appreciated, you could have done a search for Actiontec or FIOS, etc.
Admittedly, the messages concerning this have become spread over many threads. Maybe someone could start a new thread to put all the info we have about this in one place.
I'm one of the lucky ones who has an Actiontec FIOS router who has had no problems whatsoever. (I think I'm the one gstone mentioned who has hardware revision C.)

You can't. You can, however, follow the instructions in the workaround that have worked for everybody (except one person) who has reported s/he has tried them.
I have Verizon Fios and I can't use my wifi. I definitely don't want to open up my network. After calling B&N support twice I finally was told that there is an issue with Verizon and it's been over 2 1/2 weeks and they haven't fixed it. I just bought my Nook last week and if it doesn't get resolved I'm just going to return it and get a Kindle. I don't like side loading my books. I want to be able to browse and purchase books from my device.
