How to 'Close' books in your nook color?

I've been trying to figure out how to 'close' the books in my nook color, but I'm not really good at figuring technical things out.

When I say 'close' I mean, when you leave the book when you are fully done with it I wanted to know how to get back to the front page without having to scroll all the way back through it.

Tap on the book page to bring up the popup menu at the bottom, tap contents, under the Contents Tab tap Cover....

There are two easy ways.  When you get to the last page:

            1) Tap the middle of the screen. place your finger on the little blue button above "Text" and "Brightness."  Slide it all the way to you left.

            2) Tap the middle of the screen.  Tap "Content" in the lower left hand corner. Tap "Cover" on the "contents" tab.

Hi, neither of these methods work.  Please advise of another method.

I opened the elephant book and I CANNOT get rid of it.

Tapping does not bring up text, brightness - nothing works.  I want that open book icon gone!

                  Thanks,

                  Vicci

To what "elephant" book are you referring?

Try completely powering off the NC by holding the power button until the prompt appears, then select "Power off".  Wait a minute and then restart the unit to see if you can access the controls in the book.

Hi, that didn't work and I'm referring to the elephant book that came with the Nook.  I got it Thursday and am setting it up for my mother.  I'm a 10 on the scale of understanding technology.

Perhaps this unit is defective.  And now I have to drive to a store and have someone look at it.  Very frustrating that this isn't as simple as it should be [who would think to look in contents for how to close a book? - not that that worked either on this book].

Vicci <-- very frustrated, but willing to give it another go before deciding to send on or return!

That "open book icon" is not an open book icon.  it is your "keep reading" icon.  To get rid of "the elephant book" from being linked to it, open any other book.  That recent read icon allows you to open your current read from any screen on the device.   So opening another book will clear the association.  Also, on your home page at the top left you can see what that title would be.

                          Hope this helps

Hi, so what if you don't want any book to be open?  It seems strange to have something be 'open' when I finished it or just want to play cards.  I did find the book title in top left, but would expect to be able to close and not have that icon there, but I guess knowing UI's too much is getting in my way of how this works.

I appreciate the insight and help!

I don't know if this analogy will work for you, but the "keep reading" (open book icon) is kind of like the channel you were last watching on your TV.  For instance, if you are watching TV, turn the TV off and then sometime later turn it back on, your TV automatically turns on to the same channel you were watching when you turned it off.

I choose to compare the icon function to a TV channel rather than an app on your phone because you are correct that you cannot completely "back out" of the keep reading function and open it to some kind of general opening/home screen:  you will always open to the last book--and last page--you were reading on the device.

Exactly. Its not "oh, you left a book open", its "here's the last book you had open". In setting it up for someone else, open a book you think they'll like and leave it on the cover page.

I am very an@l about going back to the cover of my books too when I finish reading them. Glad to know I am not the only one!
