    Error Dialog: User Not Activated

I have had my Nook SImple Touch for about a year now, and I have been using Adobe Digital Editions without a problem. Now, all of the sudden, Barnes and Noble updated my software and I can't read any of my ADE books!! It just says "Error Dialog: User not activated" every time I click on them. I have looked at many other websites and I have tried plugging my nook in to my computer and reauthorizing it, reauthorizing my computer, deleting the digital editions file and .adobe-digital-editions file, redownloading my books, turning my nook off and on, crying, and screaming. The weird thing is, in all the instructions, it says a pop-up box will come up when I delete the files, but it never does. Is that normal? I always have to do it manually by clicking on the gear. I even made sure I "unhid" all the hidden files. I HAVE DONE EACH OF THESE AT LEAST 5 TIMES AND THEY NEVER WORK!!! HELP ME, PLEASE.

Also, a lot of the websites say to make sure your Barnes and Noble ADE I.D. is the same as the one on your ADE computer I.D.. Is the B&N ADE I.D. different from just the Barnes and Noble ID? Becasue I have been using my sisters email for my computer ADE and my email for the B&N I.D.. Are they supposed to be the same? If so, how come I was able to use it without a problem before?? I tried reauthorizing ADE with my email, because I also have an ADE account with my email, but then it wouldn't let me redownload my books onto the new account. Does this mean I have to change the ADE computer I.D. and wait until my books are available again to read them? Is that the way to fix it? UGH!

      Help is much appreciated.

      P.S. I have ADE version 2.0

Did you delete the digital editions folder and .adobe folder from the Nook or the computer?  You need to delete them both from the Nook.  Your ADE ID and your BN ID are different.  The BN ID is used to log into the BN site, the ADE id is an Adobe ID.  They do not need to be the same.  If you've been using your sisters email, you need to continue using it, you can't transfer the books to another user ID.

After you delete the two folders from the Nook, you need to properly eject the Nook from the computer and close ADE.  Open ADE and connect the Nook, you should get a window asking you to authorize the device.

          Did you follow these instructions?

          1. Go to “My Computer” (or the equivalent on your PC or Mac) and click on the Nook drive.
          2. Find and delete the “.adobe-digital-editions file.  (I copied my digital editions folder to my PC and then deleted it from the Nook, in addition to delete the .adobe ID.)
          3. Close ADE
          4. Restart ADE
          5. Your Nook should now be visible to ADE, if not
          6. Go back to the Nook drive
          7. Find the “Digital Editions” file and delete it
          8. Close ADE
          9. Restart ADE

          10.  Nook will be visible

          11.  Click “Authorize Device”

If I were to return my books, connect my ADE with a different I.D. and get my books again when they become available again, would that work?

Whew! I started feeling my blood pressure rise when I saw the error message on my Nook tonight, but was able to fix it without too much trouble. I have a Mac, and since I avoid PCs as much as possible (hee hee!), I was able to do what I needed to do with Terminal.

I've had my Nook for only a few months ... I sure hope software updates don't cause issues like this too often! :smileyfrustrated:

                I HAVE THE ANSWER!!

                The factory reset worked!

                1. Do a factory reset on your nook (go to settings, device info, erase and deregister device, wait until it finishes, and then put in all your info.)

                2. Reboot your computer

                4. Plug your nook into the computer via USB

                5. Open adobe digital editions

                6. see if your nook shows up on the left side (if it doesn't show up, close ADE and go to 'Finder' (Mac) or 'My Computer' and delete the 'adobe.digital.editions' file. Then reopen ADE. If THAT doesn't work, uninstall or delete ADE and reinstall it again. Then, reopen ADE and it should be there)

                7. Authorize device

NOTE: Doing a factory reset on your nook will delete all sideloaded books, but not your purchased B&N books, which can be redownloaded.

                I'M SO HAPPY!

I don't mind losing my library books, because they can easly be downloaded again.

I don't want to remove ADE because I have 19 other books on it.  I have already deleted the two folders in the nook, but only 6 of the books transfered (including the new library books).

The other 13 books say "No permission to copy document here" when I try and drag them to the Nook.

These other books are from other free book sites.

Also, although I hit something that says activate ADE, it never asks me for my name and password.  Can I put this in somewhere?

I suddenly got this message very late (3 am) one night and immediately started freaking. I got my Nook just for reading ADE on the go and got it less than a month ago. I was following this forum chain frantically, everything happening to CateYuk, happened to me.

But FINALLY it worked! I had to reset my Nook AND reinstall ADE AGAIN. But it finally worked. I never want to turn my wifi on again!!

Thank you!  I had the same problem, and this finally worked!  I'm so relieved!

I have a Mac.  And have updated to the digital editions 2.0 version.  I have deleted all books from that library.  I have deauthorized and reauthorized the software on the computer.  I have deleted the digital editions file from the Nook.  I have deauthorized and reauthorized the nook.  I have redownloaded books to the computer.  When I transfer from ADE 2.0 to the nook, I can see the books listed if I open the nook from the desktop.  They also show transferred on the nook , but open with the error user not activated.

I think I've tried everything, suggested.  The only thing I could be missing is this hidden file.  Where is that file?  On the Nook?  Where? Is this where people have suggested connecting it to a PC in order to view ?

I was really loving borrowed Ebooks from the library.  This stinks.

erasing and re-registering my device did the trick.  i went through all the other steps listed earlier and they didn't work.

updated ADE to 2.0, deregistered my nook and then re-registered.  thank goodness!

I have this same problem. After several hours of frustration, I remembered I had this problem when I initially started downloading Epub books on my simple touch. The problem???? Not sure but I use a MAC Book Pro with OSX Lion. The only way I could get my simple touch authorized was to authorize it on a different computer (I used my husbands PC).

I just started having these problems as I decided to try library books on my Nook ST.  I see the hidden files on my Nook and I didn't think I had it authorized until today but maybe I had previously as I had an older version of ADE on my Mac.  I'm assuming looking at the dates of the files in the .adobe-digital-editions and Digital Editions folders won't be any help?  I'm going to delete those folders from my Nook and re-try authorizing my Nook from my Mac later.  Hopefully this works!

Deleting the folders from my Nook worked!  Thank you everyone!
