Active petition for Nook Tablet keyboard.

The Nook Tablet especially, but also the nook color, could make an excellent netbook replacement if paired with a decent keyboard.  As of now, I think the only way to do that with the NC is load another kernel, an option unavailable for NT owners.  And frankly, I have no desire to void my warranty.  I just want a keyboard.

So, tonight I sent my first request to B&N to get them to update their software and ship a keyboard/case that would fulfill my nooktop dreams.  I know the need is niche (though increasingly accomodated elsewhere), but I'm betting there are others who'd like the same thing, and I'd like to invite you to request the peripheral as well.  Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that.

You can email B&N here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/customerservice/contactus

I expressly asked that they pass the request up the line, in hopes of someone who can tally the requests and notice them seeing it.  I also appealed to their bottom line claiming that grabbing college kids now would ensure brand loyalty going forward -- a tactic Apple has been perfecting for some time now.

Post here if you're interested in pursuing this, if we get enough people, maybe we can ensure they get a new request every day until they relent.  Thanks for reading.

I think someone has a similar petition on the XDA-developers forum.

Despite how many of us (including me) would like the NT to be a general-purpose Android tablet, I think it is naive to expect B&N to respond to requests to do so, and adding a keyboard is not an "eReader"-type function;  it is a tablet-like function.  I'd suggest ignoring the fact that B&N calls it the "Nook Tablet",  which implies it is a general-purpose tablet; it's an eReader that is even more locked down than the Nook Color.

Heck, we can't even get B&N to fix bugs in the apps that they provide by default on the device.  I mean, like it's wasted effort.

Hopefully this message is not in the same category.

I also am not sure how high this would rank on the NT developers' list, but you can sign me up to be the second in line to buy a keyboard for it. I worked with a sales rep who had one of those keyboard cases for her IPad, and it worked great. Granted that screen is larger, but I have a fold-up keyboard for my Palm TX, and its screen is 1/3 this size. A 7in. Screen is just a bit too big to thumb type easily in landscape mode.

saying this is not a common wish is like saying there isn't a huge overlap between readers and writers.  even if what some mostly write is emails or forum posts.  (i include myself in that comment, because i have been neglecting the creative writing for ages :smileysad:)

I'm not clear on how you could say it is 'naive' to expect the B&N Tablet, (yes, marketed and marked with the word TABLET) to offer features found in their competitive "Tablet" market.  If it is supposed to be just another ereader, then they should market and mark it as such.  I do not think it is unreasonable at all for us to ask B&N to step-up to the plate and issue an updated O/S to support an external keyboard, especially if that ability already exists in the market for bootleg versions of the kernel.

Its not unreasonable to make any polite request, but it is unrealistic to expect them to do a substantial upgrade along those lines for a discontinued device.

I will contribute to your PAC if you contribute to mine for google calender support and syncing. I use google calander on my phone and pc, would prefer to have it on my NT as well.

Mars, I tried it. They load OK but won't allow input or sync so all I can do is access, I can do that much in the web browser.

You can count me in on those looking for a keyboard option!

I agree.  The nook color/tablet is much more than a reader.  I suspect that I'm not the only one that would appreciate having the added multiuse capability that would come with an attachable keyboard.

I'm 100% with you on this! I also think you ought to patent your term "NookTop" - you may have started a whole new thing!

Wow, really? A keyboard is more important then selling the battery??

                              • Re: Active petition for Nook Tablet keyboard.

Here's the thing. Yes I would love a keyboard for my Nook Tablet BUT the only way to get one to work is to root the Nook with either n2a (Jellybean) or CyanogenMod (CM7). There are cards available that allow doing so and will not void warrenties or ruin the original Nook interface. This is what I don't get about Barns and Noble... They want their so called "Tablet" products to be mostly e-readers, ok fine. BUT they already have products such as the simple touch and simple touch with glowlight that are nothing but e-readers and now they have the HD and HD plus. What is the point of having all of these products? There is NO point. I don't see why Barnes and noble bothered to come out with the simple touch which is only an e-reader when most people want tablets that can do like an iPad or Android. ipad and android can read books just like an e-reader. I also don't understand why BN came out with a tablet that can access the web and watch movies, ect if they just wanted to make e-readers their priority. They have expressely stated that all of their products are e-readers first, tablets second and is the way they treat everything associated on their products. For example.. any of the apps or web or Netflix, ect on the Nook always come second after the Nooks use of an e-reader. So that is why the Nooks do not have full Android capabilities and many of the android apps are not available for the nooks. I was told by a BN associate that certain Android apps are available for the HD that are not available for the Tablet or Color and that is because BN hasn't made them compatible (screen size, ect) on the the tablet or color, which I call bullshit on because if the same app works on an android 7 inch tablet then it certainly can work on the Nook tablet and color. Now if BN wants e-readers primarily then they have that with the simple touch. They should NEVER have called the Nook tablet a tablet because it simply is not. While it can browse the web and do some apps, it cannot do what an ipad or android tablet can do. If they want to make a tablet then do so. personally I do not see a difference between the color and the tablet. nor do I see a difference between the hd and hd plus. Its just a way of having more products to sell to make more money.

So.. About the petition. Even tho I would love a keyboard and certain features that the nook does not provide, I would not waste my time with e-mailing BN and petitioning them unless of course we got a sizeable number of people doing this at the same time. Like if we actually signed a petition and had like 30, 40, or 50 thousand people sign it and then someone delivered that to BN CEO. BN customer service which handles the e-mails doesn't give two shits about you or anyone else and any e-mails you send them will just get lost along the way after the customer service associate reads it. In order to make any kind of dent to corporate companies you have to have a good number of people because they don't care if they lose you and I and everyone who posts to this thread. There isn't enough people here to make a dent in their sales. Now when you start getting hundreds and thousands of people speaking out or if you got celebrities such as michael moore speaking out, then they will listen because that many people will make a dent in their sales and if they want to make any money they will have to listen and do what the customers want. All corporate companies are like this.

It could be such a nice feature to have a keyboard for the nook tablet. Especially with all the newer office suite applications. I am all for this!

Hypothetically, it would be useful to some NT owners in some settings. But it would be silly to think that B&N is going to add it now, after it has stopped making the NT.

And its not going to make one for the Nook HD/HD+ and then make it backward compatible with the NT, either. The Nook HD/HD+ have Blu-Tooth, which allows a keyboard without plugging in. But the NT doesn't have a Blu-Tooth chip inside. And the Nook HD/HD+ has a proprietary connector, to solve the problems with the "extended micro-USB" connector.

So either a plug in or a wireless keyboard for the Nook HD/HD+ would be physically incompatible with the Nook Tablet.

Plus, since they have Blu-Tooth on the Nook HD, they don't HAVE to make a proprietary keyboard for the Nook HD: they can just allow people to get third party Blu-Tooth keyboards.

My understanding is that the NT does have a bluetooth chip inside.  There are also bluetooth software components in the NT.

However, you are 100% correct in that B&N will not make bluetooth keyboards work on the NT.  Aside from the fact that they are not selling the NT any more and would like people wanting a keyboard to buy the HD line, it's just not B&N's style (meaning past history of not adding features users want).
