Yes,Go Ahead and Get "ezPDF" App!

THIS IS A POSITIVE REVIEW OF THE "ezPDF" APP :smileyvery-happy:

I was reluctant to purchase the "ezPDF Reader" app after reading so many negative reviews about it in the Nook app store.  However, after finally giving in, I was pleasantly surprised and had a very positive experience. I wanted to alert those that may be deliberating about it, that it turned out to work very well.  The app's features are listed below to encourage any waverers that may, up to this point, have been dealing with the frustraton of nearly unreadable PDF books on the Nook Color.

I have a number of DRM'd PDF books that will not convert to ePUB via Calibre.  But, I still wanted to read them on my Nook Color.  Unfortunately, the newly updated Nook Color native PDF reader would still not open many of them (presenting only the dreaded "Red X").

The ones that it did open would only display in tiny-to-read print, or if enlarged, interfered with page turns and reset each page after the turn.  To top it all off, the native reader will not save my place and would always re-open at the beginning of the document/book again.  I found this to be very frustrating and ALMOST deleted all my PDF books, which, up to that point, were more or less unreadable and just taking up space in my memory.

Extremely frustrated, I finally took a chance on the $0.99 "ezPDF Reader."  I'm glad I did.

      Pluses:

      • It's DIRT CHEAP
      • It's FAIRLY INTUITIVE, once you play around with all the buttons
      • It opened all of my PDF documents - NO MORE RED "X"
      • It views in scrollable Landscape mode - FONT ENLARGES NICELY
      • In Landscape mode, scroll to bottom of page, tap the white arrow and - PAGE TURNS SEAMLESSLY WITHOUT RE-SIZING, etc.
      • It has also - REMEMBERED MY LAST PAGE when re-opened

      Caveats:

      • You must have a microSD card.
      • The "ezPDF Reader" must be loaded on your microSD card.
      • You must sideload your PDF documents/books somewhere on the microSD card as well (I put mine under "My Files, Books" and they worked just fine).
      • You should play around a little bit with the button/features before you begin, but then you'll be more comfortable

I hope that helps someone decide on whether to get the app or not in order to enoy all of your negelected PDF books!

      All the best,

      Saint Nookolas

          It needs a User Guide.

For example when I get most of my PDFs as email attachments or download via web.  They go to My Files/My Downloads on the main memory.  There is no way to access them using ezPDF that I could find.

The app does not provide any means to change file associations.  When I select a pdf the native pdf reader comes up.  Every app should provide a means to change file associations. It may have this feature but I have not found it.

I tried the new email app and it ask you if you want to open the app using ezPDF.  I selected yes and it came up.  I could not figure out how to save the PDF.  I could not figure out how to quit ezPDF.

It is cheap so no complaints.  However, it needs a few refinements to make it user friendly.  A User Guide would help.

            • Re: Yes,Go Ahead and Get "ezPDF" App!

Agreed, a User Guide would help (that's why I suggested playing around with it before doing anything significant, it took me a bit to figure it out).

As for your downloads, the only way I know to deal with that is via USB, then drag and drop from the Nook memory file to the microSD card memory file.

Of course, that is terribly inconvenient, but it will work.

Hopefully, future upgrades will resolve some of those issue.  In the meantime, its still better than the native reader.  I was just happy to find something that let me read a book that has been on my "to do" list for quite some time!

This is not the fault of ezPDF and is, in fact, out of its control.  The app that gets launched to open a particular document type is controlled by whatever launcher, homescreen or "shell" you're running.  I this case, it's the B&N Library UI, which has dispatching for PDF files hard-wired in.

If you're not happy with that, complain to B&N, not Unidocs, Inc.  I agree with you though that this is a limitation and aggravation the Nook owners shouldn't be saddled with.  It really diminishes the "quality of experience" of the reading-centric environment.

You don't need to sideload pdfs to the card.  If you already have them on your nook or are downloading into the downoads folder directly onto the nook from the web browser(not the sd card) follow the instructions below

                .

To get to your main folders on the nook in ezpdf (not on the card) go to the import icon (the little rectangle with the arrow on it) It will show the directories available on the sd card. touch the main directory at the top mnt/sdcard/ and tap ok. You get a message that says unable to copy or move. Then go back into the import icon. This time you will see that you are at the root of the Nook Color itself, your file folders are under media the my files.

Not very intuitive but it works. I think any new files you want to read with ezpdf can just be saved into the library folder which is under bookdata in the ezpdf folder on the card. Then you don’t have to do the import to open a file.

I saw this previously but there is no import icon.  I see My docs, Recent, All PDF and Web docs.  I am stock not rooted.  Can you send a screen shot?

Just downloaded ezPDF and wasn't able to access some files already on my NC until I saw this tip. Many thanks! :smileyhappy:

BTW, one of those files was a Google-scanned public domain catalog heavy with engraved images.  Each new full-page image took several seconds for ezPDF to display on the NC; the Foxit reader on my main computer (a dual-core AMD64) took about a second.  About what I'd expect given the difference in hardware...

Thanks for the clear instructions - I was able to find pdf files on my main memory this way. However when I tried to open them, I get the horribly ungrammatical error "It is failed to open this document".

                        I give up!!

I am not very techy, however I saw that there were many options available that the current PDF reader that comes with Nook Color does not have.

I downloaded the app. It downloaded directly to Nook not the SD card. Soooo I moved the app to the SD card.. I can't seem to get it to work in either form... It brings me to the 4 page thank you and a link. First, I clicked the link with the NookC, but I read the directions again and it says to do it from a computer... So i tried again... No luck....

I am just uncertain of how it works... I can't even play around with it because I cant open anything up in the app, I am just lost....

As several had mentioned it would be great to have a manual, but it doesnt.. Any help would be appreciated..

I do not live in the USA but actually spend alot of time there for my work which is based in Miami. I purchased the Nook Color back in Feb of this year as all the reviews were good against the Kindle and the others. I now cannot purchase any books or apps from the B&N web site due to me not living in the USA, so all these apps and ezPDF reader are no good to me. Or, is there any way of obtaining these whilst I am in Europe?

                          • Re: Yes,Go Ahead and Get "ezPDF" App!

I have a ezPDF question. When I first open a PDF using ezpdf there is a tool bar/menu bar at the bottom, which will eventually hide itself. How do I get that bar to show again? I tried tapping, dragging, holding but I cannot get that bar to show again unless I close then reopen the PDF.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Still trying to figure out the buttons myself, but to me it seems like a single tap toggles those bars on and off, while a double tap zooms in on the area or article I tap on.  Sometimes it seems like a triple-tap (if there is such a thing!) cycles between zooming in and zooming back out, but that may just be me being impatient and the app being slow.

Granted my main use of ezPDF is reading the USAtoday issues that I've downloaded, so other pdf files may react differently.   Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you, of course i don't have my NC with me at the moment to try it (had it yesterday when i poted the question, go figure) but i will try it as soon as i get home. I'll post back my success or failure  : )

I see it has been a while since anyone commented on this thread, but maybe someone can help.

I read the reviews and purchased and downloaded the ezpdf reader, now called "pro" ezpdf reader and now costing $3.99. It opens my pdf books, but very, very slowly and only holds a page or 2 loaded. These are books I read with my children or that they read and it takes several minutes for the pages to load, and then loads maybe 2 before you have to wait another several minutes for the next page or 2. Kids can't wait several minutes between each page, my attention span is barely that long. Is there a way to speed this up? Am I doing something wrong?
