Dvd to Nook..Dvd Catalyst 4 Thumbs up

I know this has been talked about in posts before but I have to bring it up again! The Dvd Catalyst 4 program is now on sale for $9.95, usuallly $19.95. I got it to see about putting dvd's onto my NC. I LOVE The program.   I am still trying to figure it out for the most part but I now have 3 movies on my NC.  All of them converted under 900 mb each using the DVD Catalyst 4 program!   The picture quality is really good to excellant!

The program ripped the movie files onto my computer in 7 different mp4's. I found the one that is the entire movie without all the extra's.  Thats the one I transferred over.  I'm still playing around with the program, but had to give it a thumbs up. It's worth the $ I paid for it!

Thanks for the tip.  I bought this after it was recommended in the forums, but the first movie I tried to convert (Galaxy Quest) failed.

I'll give it another shot with other movies.    Have you had any errors with copy protected media?

I just picked up Galaxy Quest, to see what would be causing the problem you experienced, but it is converting just fine. If you were using DVD Catalyst 4.0.2.2, the conversion probably completed fine, but due to a bug in that version (sorry) all conversions were reported as failed.

The Galaxy Quest version I have here is the "Deluxe Edition" and shows up as "GALAXY_QUEST_SE" in "My Computer"

Thank you,  momto4wild1s, I am glad you enjoy DVD Catalyst 4.

First off, I love the Nook.

I picked up one of those Augen tablets last year, but have been disappointed with it since the beginning. A few months ago I upgraded my razr phone to a Droid X, and love it but over the last couple of months, I wanted something a little bigger, and the NC is just great. I'm anxiously waiting for the Android-update for it though. The only thing missing for me is the gmail notification.

I picked up a NOOKcolor myself last week, so I could better assist the questions people have with the Nook, and a few days ago, I put up a lengthy guide on my website on all the steps involved for putting a movie or TV show from DVD onto your Nook.

I signed up on the board just now so I could answer some questions people might have in regards of my software, and hopefully the admins wouldn't mind me too much. While I do visit various forums and boards, I rarely sign up because some peoiple tend to see it as advertising rather than trying to help people out. I am an active member on a few Droid forums, and people are quite happy with me being there to help with questions they have, and I am hoping I can be of help here as well.

As for some of the questions in this thread:

Batterylife. I haven't had much time with the Nook to see how the batterylife holds up, but I will run a few tests to see what works best. With the latest version, I included a "fast" profile for the NOOKcolor, which is less demanding with playback, but there is a difference in quality, especially for action movies.

Multiple "tracks". The software is designed to be able to convert a DVD with just 1 click. Rather than having to select and convert individual TV episodes from a DVD, the software scans a DVD for video content that is longer than 10 minutes (adjustable). Anything shorter than that, such as trailers and special features is filtered out, leaving you with either the movie or TV episodes. From there, its a simple click on the Go button to start the process. In some cases special features exceed the 10minute playlength, so they will show up as well. The easiest way to not convert these is to just nselect the ones you do not want, and then remove the "enable for conversion" checkmark. For "Power Users" you can also enable "Automatic Movie/Episode detection" in Global Settings > DVD, which will enable/disable tracks based on what kind of DVD it thinks it is.

Speed (Twilight vs Toy Story 3). Internally, the software uses a few different methods of accessing the DVD. By default it tries the fastest conversion mode, but for some DVDs, this doesn't work, so it switches to a slower method.

For questions, feel free to contact me. I will check these forums on a daily basis, but my response time by email is the fastest way.

Is it supposed to take about 5 hrs to convert a dvd?

It depends on the computer you are using.Converting to HQ format using a netbook will result in slow conversions, but if you use a recent dual-core system, it takes about half the playlength of the movie. Quad Cores are even faster than that.

If you are using an older computer, you can select the fast profile, which runs pretty quick, even on netbooks.

Well I have to say - I let it work while I was sleeping and this morning it was done and the picture is beautiful.  Easy to do - I just have to figure out how to get it to work faster.  I did check out the reasons that would slow it down - but I didn't see where any of them referred to my situation.

The 5 hours is a bit strange, especially on your DualCore Windows 7 machine. I am using a 4 year old DualCore myself, and even when I select the Nookcolor HQ profile I can convert a 1 1/2 hour movie in a little less than an hour.

Are you using the latest "official" version of the program (4.0.2.3) or the Beta (4.0.3) version?

The Beta version, released around x-mas time, was released to tackle an issue with AMD systems, but has some performance issues. Since you are using an Intel system, I would recommend using the official version instead.

Please click on the cat-eyes in the program to have it check for updates. If that doesn't help, please send me an email instead. While I don't mind troubleshooting on forums, it just works better by email.

I transferred Titanic this morning.  The movie is over 3 hrs and it transferred in less than 1 hr and 15 min.  I didn't have my nook plugged into the computer last night - I thought I could just save it to my computer then copy to my nook.  Maybe that was the difference.  Anyway - Thanks for a great product.  I'm very pleased with the results.  I checked - I do have the latest version.

I download a free trial of the  DVD Catalyst 4 so I can see if it worked before buying it. I figured out how to use it but it only downloads on my nook just the first 30 mins of the movie. Can it be because I'm using a free trial or am I doing something wrong?

I bought the program and like it a lot. If I can make it work anyone can. Catalyst Guy is very helpful. Would recommend any thinking about it to try it. I love electronic but am technology impaired.

I also recently bought this program and really love it.  I have ripped quite a number of my DVD collection already for my Nook Color and they all work perfectly and look really good.  I have one curious question, though.  I have the program set to convert for the B&N basic Nook Color setting and that works fine for me.  However, I have seen others post here that it takes them about 20-30 minutes to convert a DVD, but for my movies every one takes about 2.5 hours to convert, even if it is the only application I have running (I have the most recent update 4.0.2.5).  Is there some setting I am missing that it takes so long for me and not for others?  I have a Dell XPS dual core system, which is supposed to be really fast...

Update, the new version did make the conversion quicker but it only knocked off about a half hour, so it still takes me 2 hours to rip/convert.  I can live with it, but out of curiosity was wondering how others can get such short conversion times.

Does this mean the DVD is blocked from  conversion or....? I am trying this on my laptop. I have Catalyst on my Desktop, and will try it on there as well, just to make sure it is not a fluke.

I don't recall people mentioning issues with that DVD, but based on your description, it seems that the detection engine has some complications.

It took me about 2 days with attempting to convert "The Proposal", giving up, and switching to "Leap Year" to realize how great DVD Catalyst 4 really is!

I never figured out how to get The Proposal to convert.  It's protected and I'm not technically savvy.  I've read your tips specifically for this one, but nothing seems to work.

I do have a question about another movie -- The Lake House.  I followed the steps for Catalyst 4, but after a minute of converting, it ejects from the PC drive.  I tried several times.  What's wrong?

But, for the most part, if the movie is straightforward and not protected, Catalyst 4 works well in converting my movies to the NC.  I've already got 7 movies on the NC!!   And the quality is wonderful.

In most cases, the software can handle DVDs on its own, but unfortunately there are a few companies (Sony mainly, but some Disney and Pixar movies as well) that use techniques that are not actually compliant with the official DVD standard. These systems, when they were first implemented, even caused complications on some of their own DVD players,

While some DVDs that use these systems work fine, they do make things a bit more complicated. They usually appear to have 99 tracks, containing a lot of fake ones, or they have the movie listed 30 times, and only one of them is in the correct order.

On my website I maintain a list of "Problem DVDs", as well as what is needed to make them work properly.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, DVD43 (free), or other (non-free) solutions such as Slysoft's AnyDVD or DVDfab's Passkey can be a great addition to DVD Catalyst, however, in most cases these tools are not needed. Because I do not want the people who use my software to have to rely on programs created by other people, I do not use any of those tools myself.

On a side-note, I just started my 3rd battery test.

Yesterday I ran a 1 hour movie from www.archive.org, streaming from there over wifi, and from a full charge it went down to 72% when the movie was finished.

I also ran a test with Zombieland (converted using the NookColor HQ profile) and played this directly from the Nook's internal memory. After the 1 1/2 hour movie was finished, I had 82% battery remaining. Wifi was enabled, but because it was not used like it was when I was streaming the other movie, it didn't affect the battery as much.

                                                  Hi Dec17,

I just picked up "The Proposal", and ran a few tests, and to make this movie to work, 2 checkmarks need to be enabled.

Start DVD Catalyst 4 without a DVD in the drive.

Enable "Power User" mode (bottom right)

Go into "Global Settings" (top left) and then select the "Boosterpack" tab on the right.

At the bottom are 2 settings for the "Previewfix", enable both.

This will switch to a different detection-method, which will work better for this DVD.

Now insert your DVD, and when the track selection box shows up, select track 38, and click OK.

After that, you can make changes to language/subtitle selection etc just like any other DVD, and start the conversion.

I'm impressed with DVD Cat 4. Took a movie file off archive.org, 1 hr 30 mins. Program took 11 mins to convert it and played fine. No sound sync issues either. Could not believe it at first.

Yikes...I feel so dumb... I have DVD Catalyst and have converted my tv show DVDs to my NC.  But I never heard of archive.org.  So I just went on it, and don't understand how to stream or download from it. In their FAQs, they say to download, rt click on link, and save target as. Which I did, and it came up in my computers documents in notepad. Is there a simple answer for me?  DVD Cat, you said above "select the 512 mpeg4 links"....what and where, please..thx.

On July 27, 2010, the Librarian of Congress, acting on the recommendation of the Copyright Office, exempted six classes of copyrighted works from a provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") that prohibits users from circumventing copyright protection mechanisms (e.g., DVD or iPhone® encryptions or "digital locks").1 The six exemptions will be effective for the next two years and will allow users to engage in the following activities: bypass DVD encryption for certain narrow educational/non-commercial purposes, "jailbreak" iPhones® or similar smartphone devices for personal use, unlock personal cell phones for use on another network, "crack" video game software access restrictions to investigate and correct software security flaws, bypass malfunctioning or broken hardware dongles to enable dongle-activated software to function, and circumvent text-to-speech restrictions on eBooks when no alternative read-aloud eBooks exist. Compared to the 2000, 2003, and 2006 DMCA exemptions, the 2010 DMCA Exemptions are broader and tend to favor end-users more so than copyright owners.

I am currently uploading a collection of trailers and sample files for video playback on the NOOKcolor. If you are unsure if you would enjoy watching video on your NC or would like to watch a few movie trailers, visit the following link:

                                                            http://www.tools4movies.com/nook/

The trailer thing is something I have done for a few other devices, such as the Droid, Nexus and iPhone, but I figured people would like to be able to see what their NC is capable of besides books.

The trailers are listed in 2 different formats. If you visit the link on your NOOKcolor, the MP4 file links will actually play while downloading (streaming). If you would like to actually store the trailers on your Nook, visit the link on a computer and use the zip file links to download the file(s) you want. Then extract the mp4 file, and copy it to your Nook.

The trailers were created from files downloaded from the Apple Trailer website, and converted with DVD Catalyst 4 (4.0.2.3) using the NookColor HQ settings (1500Kbps video, 160Kbps audio, H264/AVC) with "black bar" removal enabled to make them fill most of the screen (854x480 resolution).

I am still uploading new ones, so if there isn't something you like, check back in a little while.

I also added a PDF version of the NOOKguide found on my website in the same folder, so if you like what you see and want to know how to do it yourself, have a look at that.

If you have any questions or requests for new trailers, feel free to contact me.

I haven't set a date yet, but I am currently working on an updated website, and when that is finished, DVD Catalyst 4 will go up to $20.

If you want to use the trailers to "show-off" your NOOK, or keep the trailers on it for your viewing pleasure, use a computer to download the ZIP files, and transfer the MP4 files in them to your NOOK. For more information, have a look at the DVD to NOOK Guide, found at the very top of the link.

The standard profile is what I use for my own conversions. Rather than just having a few great-looking files on my Nook, I don't like filling it up that often, so I rather have a large collection of good-looking ones (30 episodes of Hogan's Heroes at the moment, without using an SD-card:smileyhappy:).

With DVD Catalyst 4, the conversion of the same file took about 22 minutes on the same system.

If you are looking for a video conversion application, I would strongly suggest to try before you buy.

(dvdcat works with 100's of other devices too, such as iPod/iPad/Zune etc, all which can be selected in a similar way)

                                                                                                  3. insert your DVD or drag video files (avi, mpg) onto it.

Some DVDs convert a little slower due to the way the DVD was originally created (when a DVD seems to cause complications using the default fast conversion mode, DVD Catalyst restarts the conversion using slower settings to make sure it converts properly)

I purchased DVD Catalyst 4 and ripped "Shoot em up" I transferred the file to my SD card and the nook will not play it. I did it again with at 720x420 and it still will not play. What is going on?

If you select the file through the Library > My Files, it doesn't matter where the file is located in order to play it.

One more thing, there was some sort of codec error at the end of the duplication, this happened after every section converted (there were three sections). The file was about the right size, I have not tried playing it on my computer(it is at home) I will try when I get back.

Usually if there are complications, they occeur at the very beginning of the conversion.
