Routers that Work with the 1.2 Upgrade?

Would those of you who have updated your NCs recently and have had no wi-fi connection problems be kind enough to inform me of what routers you have that work with your NC.

I may be buying one in order to get my replacement NC to connect but I don't want to buy one (I'll have to order one since I live in the boonies...) and then be in the same situation I am now: an incompatible NC.

Definitely want to go with an "N" one since that is what I have now.  I am not 'downgrading' to B/G mode.  I've been reading the posts since this update nightmare started over two weeks ago, have seen and read a lot about the routers that don't work (my current one is a Belkin N1, approx. two years old), but not certain--or at least don't recall--those that do work, or if there is any 'pattern' as to what works or what doesn't.

Just some suggestions would be really appreciated.

      Thank you.

I am currently using a NetGear RangeMax Duel Band Wireless-N Modem Router and it works perfectly.  The cool thing about this router/modem is that it is Duel Band which means I have 2 wireless connections that I can log into.  This specific router/modem is specifically designed for high connection rates and gaming.  Athough it is not cheap.  http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-DGND3300-RangeMax-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B001UHMB5O

My router at home is a Fry's Electronics FR 300RTR. The router at work is a Netgear that's about 2 years old. When I first bought my NC, it would do the "connected..no internet" thing at home. I changed some security setting or another, and then it would work. NC software version at that time was 1.10. The Netgear worked just fine with 1.10 , and both worked without any glitches with version 1.20. I don't have the Netgear model ID at the moment.

I would suggest trying variations on your security settings until you get it to work. It seems that different routers require different security setting combinations to work with the NC, from what I read on this forum when I first tried to get mine to work. Perhaps some one with your router could provide you with the magic combination that works for them. Sooner or later, B&N will get this sorted out. As it is now, I still have compatibility problems with public secure routers when I travel, most recently at a restaurant at the Atlanta airport. I am the captain on a yacht, and travel extensively on the East Coast. I'm looking forward to continuing to have problems with secure routers at marinas while traveling.

There is no reason that B&N can't resolve this. To those people who say that poor B&N has to deal with so many different routers and settings, I would point out that all electronics manufacturers have the same problem, but don't have nearly the same magnitude of issues. My Toshiba laptop, a Lenovo laptop, an LG wireless enabled TV, a Phillips wireless BluRay are all connected to my home network, and only the NC had a problem. My Toshiba Windows 7 laptop travels the world, and never has problems.

furyu, at least with this thread you are finally starting to correctly tackle the problem, instead of making claims how bad 1.2 update is when most NC owners have no problem and you are alone with your wifi problem.  I understand that it is frustrating to not be able to do something so simple, and end up with hours and hours of headaches.

There have been several that have posted an issue with N routers and a couple with belkin problems.  do a google site search on belkin, then PM the Belkin owners and see if they corrected the problems they had.

Good luck... I look forward to you posting something positive.

I'm using an Apple Airport Extreme at home, Time Capsule at work, and Airport Express on travel, and all work without issue.

                  • Re: Routers that Work with the 1.2 Upgrade?

Like bwg, I am using an Apple Airport Extreme.  We're set to WPA2, and are not broadcasting our SSID.  Didn't have a lick of trouble connecting (other than trying to remember what my husband set the password as :smileywink:

Though, my Nook Color (purchased 5/8) seemed to be pre-loaded with v1.2.  Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

                    D-Link DIR-825. Works fine with 1.1 & 1.2.

I also have an Apple Airport Extreme, and no wifi issues. It's expensive, but... it works. I wanted/needed Dual Band, and I have no regrets with this router.

Dude you really have a problem, accusing people of something with zero evidence, last was those that pointed out how big a fool you have been in other posts where you are giving advice on 1.2 and you never have successfully installed 1.2 and are afraid to even turn on your wifi.  You called us all plants by B&N or worse.  Here again you are making accusations, with no merit.  I'm nearly 60, I don't need to play childish games.

I still wish you luck, because I am tired of reading your lame speculations and frequent invention of problems that don't exist.

Next time someone extends a empathic hand, even if half hearted, try not to pee all over them.  I can empathize with your frustrations, however I have zero tollerance for all the misleading info that you have ranted about on this forum leading others to not try the 1.2 update and cower in fear like you have.

My guess is the laurels were given, because I provided a common sense method of finding info out from other Belkin owners, who have successfully installed 1.2 update and have a good working wifi with their Belkin routers.

My NC is attached to an old school D-LINK DIR-625 that's running a firmware from 10/2006.  Ran fine both on 1.1 & 1.2.  I keep it around for non-N devices.

I have been having the connected, but no internet problem also since the update. I seem to only have it during tne day. At night I don't seem to have a problem which makes me wonder if it's not a Comcast problem. I will try the security setting changes & see if that makes a difference. I have no idea what kind of router I have, that's my husband's dept. but I will find out. Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one with this problem, I was beginning to think I was going crazier than I am.

Well, my new replacement NC is not connecting to my router despite the entire debugging routine (except for hard resetting), so I'm either going to buy a new modem, or else wait for the 1.2 auto-rooter to become available, and try that.

I called Belkin today to see if they could offer any help: nada.  I haven't called my ISP but I can't see where they would have anything to offer either.  Everything else in this household, laptops, game devices, printers, etc., are all working wonderfully with the router.  The NC is the only thing that won't connect to it.  So weird.

I called BN Support one last time and was on the phone with "Jordan" for a solid 45-minutes.  He was very sympathetic.  ?  He kept saying, "it's a known issue" but there is no fix for it.  I am suppose to get a call from 'upper management.'  Sure.  Won't be waiting around for that.

                                Oh well.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone, regarding your routers that do work. The Apple Airport sounds great but it is a tad on the expensive side.  I'm not sure it's worth spending that much just to get this Nook Color running, and I can't be certain it'll work anyway.

Dipoo... I think your situation is even weirder than mine, being able to connect at night but not during the day.  I've read most, maybe all, of the posts regarding the wi-fi connection problems and that is the first time I've heard of that situation.  Well, at least you can do your downloading, etc., at night.

Thanks to all for weighing in on this.

Yeah, the Airport is a tad pricey, but from my experience, well worth the cost.  The big deciding factor for us was that it can also function as a print server, and at the time, we would have spent just as much buying a separate router and print server.  And, the user interface is very user friendly, and my husband has had virtually no issues at all maintaining our home network with it.

Do you use Macs or PCs?  Or a combo of both?

I read a review that said Apple Airport is excellent for 'mixed' systems.

My current wi-fi setup allows for wi-fi printing (I've got two printers, one that is hard wired to the desktop but can be accessed wirelessly, and then a separate wi-fi'd one) with an occasional hiccup here and there, but usually pretty reliable.

I've like my current Belkin router, no problems with it either and Customer Service has always been very helpful.  The first one I bought had a problem a few months after I got it; Belkin replaced it with a newer model, which is the one I have now.  I got that replacement one, a brand new one, I repeat (take note, BN), within a day or two of my request.  Very good service.  Would like to reward them with loyalty.  But have been reluctant to replace this router with another Belkin given the problem with my NC and this one.

I forgot to say all my devices have and continue to work. I've had the NC work through all the updates including version 1.2 and even while rooted a couple months back. A couple weeks prior to the 1.2 update I unrooted my NC and sideloaded 1.2 the night it came out with no issues.

I don't know if this is recommended but I have my router and modem plugged into a surge strip and when I leave the house for work, no one home, I turn the strip off. I've never read anything that says it is better for the router but I've noticed my modem is lasting longer than the last two and I seem to have less problems with my router than my old Dlink.

I think surge protector strips are essential for electronic equipment.  I have them throughout the house.  I don't, however, turn them off when I leave the home.  That's interesting.  I have no idea if it matters or not, but I do know you save on electricity that way.   And it's possible it does help lengthen the life of your electronic devices.

I've gone ahead and ordered (from Amazon) a Linksys E2500 Dual Band Wireless N router.  It should arrive tomorrow and I'll install over the weekend.

I'll let y'all know how this goes.  Wish me luck.

I forgot to say all my devices have and continue to work. I've had the NC work through all the updates including version 1.2 and even while rooted a couple months back. A couple weeks prior to the 1.2 update I unrooted my NC and sideloaded 1.2 the night it came out with no issues.  .......
