NT: Battery life?  How is it?

    NookGardener

The one thing that interests me about the NT is the extended battery life. Weekend has started (and there's a holiday weekend next week!)  Hoping that those of you who have already purchased and are using the NT can give the rest of us some feedback on "realtime" battery usage and if it is better than the NC. (Am assuming that 11 hours of reading with WiFi off is true; but searching the web, playing the radio, etc. what is it REALLY like.)  Would appreciate your feedback! Thanks

Battery life has been better than my Nook Color ... maybe an extra couple hours of reading. Browsing didn't really seem to use much extra in terms of battery.

I haven't tried to turn on Power Save mode yet.

It does seem that it loses substantially more power while sleeping than my Nook Color. I'm guessing this would go away if I were to turn off WiFi. Since the wireless is always available immediately when I turn it on, I think it's not truly going to sleep.

          • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

The Verge reports the Fire gets around 5 3/4 hours and the Tablet right at 7 hours.

Just curious to see what you early-early adopters are seeing for battery life now after a couple of weeks of use.  I just got mine this weekend and was alarmed to see the battery die the next day, and then need charging once again later that day.  I figured out quickly that turning wifi off every time I wasn't doing anything solved all my battery issues, but this seems extreme - shouldn't the OS be smart enough to do that itself?  I have Power Save on and am not real thrilled with the dim screen, but I'm living with it to give it some time to see how well it works.  With turning wifi on and off every single time, NOW it behaves like I expected it to.  Is this normal?

I have seen a slight increase over my CNK. one of the things I do is for apps like weather I set them to only update when tablet wakes. The main wi fi drain is from apps and email notification etc. The rest of the time they only update if I open them.
                • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

Actual reading, I get maybe 6-7 hours. This is complicated by the fact that the stand-by time is very poor--I get 2-3 days maximum of stand-by time with Wi-Fi turned off. So if I read for a few hours one day, the next day, after discharging all night, I won't get more than a couple of more hours.

I went to B&N to try and get this resolved, and the lady at the Nook counter told me, "I turn mine off every night to conserve the battery." Thinking I had a defective unit, I pointed out to her that the manual claims "With a fully charged battery and with Wi-Fi turned off, your NOOK has enough power to last in a suspended state for several weeks." I just got a blank stare, and then she repeated that she turns it off every night.

So, I went to just "look" at the NT and..... yes, came home with one.  Have had it about 2 weeks now.  Initially wasn't pleased with the NT battery life (my NC was getting longer times.) Was losing ALOT of battery life when device wasn't in use which didn't make any sense. (By a lot, I mean 2-3% per hour.  It just didn't make sense.)   So took a hard look at what I was doing differently that could be causing this result.  Was still backing out of apps with a built in "back" button, and turning off wi-fi when not in use, so that wasn't it.

Turned out that I had set up email on the NT which was using a lot of battery.(Never used this feature on the NC.) Default settings when I set up email were to check for new mail every 5 minutes. (My bad, I didn't even bother to look at this when I set it up.) Changed the setting to Never (ie Manual) and am now getting battery life closer to what was advertised.    Also have gotten in the habit of Backswiping out of any program that doesn't have a built in "back" button (which ironically seems to be the built in B&N apps! at least for me.)

Now, if anyone has figured out a way to get to the internet without hitting the "n" button, please do tell!

                        • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

I'm going to have to check my mail settings too then, because I didn't alter them at all, so it's almost certainly updating all the time.

As a test, I left wifi on last night when I went to bed and it lost about 30% overnight (7 hours or so.)  That works out to 4-ish% an hour, which seems a bit high since the screen's not on, but I may have a couple things running (I sideloaded an email app from Amazon for comparison, K9 Mail - not sure which is better, they both have their up and downsides.)

                        • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

I bought an NT a few weeks ago and it was losing significant battery life during standby (the charger cord also always showed a green N rather than the orange charging color).  I took it back and got a new NT and can say that I lose virtually no battery life during standby.  Something was clearly wrong with the first unit.

                            • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?
What I have noticed is it seems wifi does disconnect when the NT goes to sleep. It usually connects fast once I wake it up. I did once let it go to sleep while in the shop area. When I woke it up, it very briefly had the message that wifi was disconnected, but it connected by itself and that went away. Now I've been paying attention and when I wake it up the wifi icon shows it's not connected, but changes to connected quickly. My battery life has been great, but I can't give any stats to back this up.

Maybe I'm not doing this right but, I unplug my WiFi when I'm not using it.  I live in Florida where we have A LOT of thunder storms during the night so I always disconnect my electronics before I go to bed.  My son says that I shorten the life of the devices by turning them on and off every day.  I wonder which wears out the batteries and devices more, constant use or turning on and off?  Let me hear what you think?

                              • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

My battery life problem has been resolved by doing a factory restore, also called a "Hard Reset".

I fired up the Chat window on the support page, and spent approximately 25 minutes convincing the agent that a 3-day standby battery life was a Problem. At that point, he suggested I perform the "Hard Reset."

I did so, reregistered my nook, redownloaded my books and apps, and everything's been fine since. My battery drops about 4-5% of its capacity per night, which should give me a couple of weeks of standby time.

The hard reset/factory restore procedure WIPES YOUR NOOK. Caveat Emptor.

                                To perform a "Hard Reset"

                                1) Hold the power button down until NOOK TAblet is powered off, ignoring the "Power off" prompt.

                                2) After Your NOOK TAblet is powered off hold the "NOOK Home Key" down then simultaneously hold down the "Power" button, release the buttons immediately after the “Read Forever” logo disappears.

                                3) If successful, a grey NOOK Logo will appear and the screen will refresh momentarily and flash yellow. A prompt will appear asking if you would like to perform a “Factory Reset,” Tap the "NOOK Home key" to confirm. Tap the "Home key" again to begin the process.

                                4) After a few minutes your device will reset and re-install all necessary software. Once completed, you will have to register the device again.

                                r.

                              • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

How are your Nooks doing in sleep mode after a couple weeks? Because my NT seems weird. I had great battery life in sleep mode for the first couple weeks. It would lose 1% or 0% when I had it in sleep mode over night. Then, after about two weeks, it started to lose 5% over night, and then 10%. Now I'll walk away from it for a few hours, come back, and it will have lost 7% in sleep mode with wifi off.

Also, the only app I've downloaded was Quickoffice Pro. I archived it and restarted just to see if it might be that app. The app didn't seem to affect the battery. I'm just confused because it didn't used to lose hardly anything in sleep mode the first couple weeks. Is this normal?

No, that's not normal.  Sounds like something is running in the background.  Do you power down at least once a week?  Try that and checking your email settings as outlined above.

Do you use a microSD card?

I had almost the same experience as you until I removed the microSD card. I was putting bunch of side-loaded PDF files onto the external card and would leave a file opened in the reader when the unit slept. This happened with or without the wi-fi activated.

It is my theory that having something open on the microSD card somehow keeps something from sleeping properly or it keeps waking up; As soon as I removed the microSD card then the battery life went back to draining only a percent or so overnight.

After that I put the card back in but did not load any files onto it and the battery life was good. Then at some point in time an installed app put some files onto the card and battery life may or may not have got worse again. So my initial problem might not have been leaving a side-loaded PDF files left open in the reader program... it might have been a different app that periodically accesses files it saves on the card?

(I took the card out again and went to slow draining again... I haven't yet done any more testing again. Actually I want to try some apps that "call home" and see if they properly sleep without an external card... but I enjoy the longer battery life so much I don't really want to mess around because I do need battery juice for reading....)

BUT THEN: My experiences might just be placebo... it could be my imagination and perhaps I just think it lasts longer without the microSD card.  But I swear that one morning I saw the battery drop like 40%-50% in 5 or 6 hours while the unit was "sleeping". It hasn't done that again without the microSD card.

                                        • Re: NT: Battery life?  How is it?

Just for S&Gs while sitting at work today, I decided to see how the battery would hold up while streaming via Netflix. My NT is brand new out of the box as of yesterday afternoon, and has only been charged once (overnight last night), so it still needs to go through a couple of charge cycles to reach optimum performance (based on previous experience with lithium battery-powered devices).

I selected a 45-minute episode of the original Star Trek series (The Corbomite Maneuver for any other Trek fans out there who might have been curious); was connected to wifi via a Verizon LTE mifi device. I have the screen set to about 25% brightness and power save mode is turned on.. Battery was at 99% when I opened Netflix and started the episode.

I set the NT aside and worked while it ran, but checked on it three times during playback. Each time I checked the battery life it paused the show, which I would then have to start again. All in all the screen was probably on for about 48 minutes from start to finish. The video was fluid; looked crisp and very nice, even at a low brightness.

When the test concluded after I closed Netflix, I had 88% battery life. Not bad at all, IMO, especially for such a small and thin device.

Not scientific by any means, but thought that some people might be interested in hearing about it. It will certainly only get (marignally) better with a few charge/discharge cycles. :-)

EDIT: BTW, I do not currently have an SD card inserted. I have no need for one as of yet.

Keep in mind that the battery gauge on most of these devices is only moderately accurate. For some reason, if I track usage on an hour-by-hour basis on mine, I get a 10% drop when I hit roughly 70% and another at 30%. Mind you, my actual battery life is still good overall. The gauge is just off. I once streamed audio for 3 hours on a device that was indicating I had 1% charge left.

In other words: I'd only stress about it if you're actually seeing less battery life than you expected, whether in actual usage, or in standby. If you're getting weeks out of it, I'd say you're doing well!

I'm having the same problem.  My battery is discharging way too quickly in sleep mode.  When I put it down for the night Wednesday night it was at 54% battery left-- the next evening I picked it up to read it & it was totally dead.  Wouldn't even let me turn it on until I charged it.  It had been asleep that whole time, less than 24 hrs.  Wifi wasn't on either.  It was not like this when I first brought it home.  It's gotten increasingly worse the last few weeks.

Late to the party, but SO glad to read all the posts.  I have been having a HUGE problem with the battery draining while my 1 week old tablet is in sleep mode (WITH wi-fi off and pwer-save on!)  I've been having to re-charge on a DAILY basis, even when I only get to use it for a couple of hours.  It was at 100% charge when I went to bed last night, and at 70% when I woke up this morning.  Customer service tells me that this is not a problem that they hear about, which had me thinking it was me!  I have actually swapped it for a new one (because the guy in the store didn't know what else to do), and done a factory re-start because the woman on the phone didn't know what else to do (which means that I had to re-load all my books, apps, etc THREE times - lots of books because I had the first edition).  Should have checked in with y'all first!  I did have a scandisc chip in because I thought I had to in order to side-load docs and photos.  It is now out, and I will see how the charge does.  Hopefully I will have the success you mention.

                                                Thanks.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My battery life is back to normal. Does anyone else have the Quickoffice Pro app? I suspect it was that app draining my battery life in sleep mode. I let my battery drain to 15%, unarchived and rearchived the Quickoffice app, shut down and restarted my NT, and then charged it back to 100%. It's been fine ever since.

Also, no, I haven't used a microSD card in it yet.

When sleep mode was giving me trouble, I had to charge every two days. Now I'm squeezing four days out of each charge with lots of reading and some light internet surfing. I haven't watched video on it yet.

my battery is way worse then the nook color.  I have to recharge it every other day.  I only use it for maybe 20min at a time x2 or three times a day and the battery is weaker and weaker.  from 100% in the morning, 20min use, to 49% in the evening and then again 20min use and by morning i only have 20% left.... I'm very disappointment.  I sold my nook color and I wish i had it back.

I must be living right. I recharged on Friday, turned the wifi on to check out the Free Friday book and let any magazines/apps update. I normally turn the wifi off after doing that.

I just checked after reading about the problems some people are having. Turns out I didn't turn off the wifi so my NT has been on standby with the wifi on since Friday morning. The battery is at 95%. I guess my point is, if you have more lose than that just on standby and the wifi turned off, there may be a problem.

BTW, on the app side, I don't have Words with friends, I do have Lost City (no exit button), Taptu, all my emails linked in, and not a lot else that could be a problem. I do have a small SD card installed.

I am sorry other people have problems. I really like my NT. It is the only mobile that I have and I really like being able to have it with me.

There is ... something ... that triggers the problem, but I just can't narrow it down. 4 times out of 5, my Tablet is ready to go when I turn it on. That fifth time, though, it's completely dead. I use only four applications, Reading, Hulu, Netflix, and ezPDF, but it isn't like I can say "I run X and then it dies". That's the frustrating part: the conditions are so unknown, and I hate not being able to read when I want to.

The solution is to reboot the device every time I'm done reading for a while, but then it doesn't feel like a quality product to me and I resent the purchase.

If it wasn't for the Nook reading software being the best out there at the moment (not that it's perfect), then I'd have ditched it by now for a Galaxy Tab Plus where I can at least diagnose and correct the sleeping issue.
