    Major problems with Nook color

I just got the nook color today and am returning it tomorrow.  Here's a list of the problems I have had in the last three hours.

      1. USB connector/charger cable didn't fit into the nook--it had to be wiggled and pushed in

      2. Only charged for one hour and said that it was fully charged (light turned green), then the battery drained quickly

      3) Couldn't delete "downloaded" books that I didn't download (kids books that I have no interest in).  Tried deleting them from opeing the nook on my computer and directly deleting them directly from the folder and they still didn't get deleted

      4) couldn't sync the nook with my computer

      5) eBook bought online wouldn't go directly onto my nook.  When I downloaded it directly from my nook, it wouldn't open and said that I had to re-enter my information in order to open it, which I tried doing several times and it still didn't work.  For some reason, suddenly, a different version of the book showed up on the nook.  I tried opening that one, but it was just a picture of the cover.

      6) Customer service and tutorials are a joke.  The tutorial basically tells you how to turn it on.  I tried calling the customer support line, but the customer support center was closed.

      7) Can't do anything on the nook while it's in USB mode

      8) it's really heavy

After searching the internet for solutions to the problem, nothing worked.  It's been three hours and I haven't been able to download or read anything.  The nook is going back to the store tomorrow and I'm getting an Ipad, which I should have done in the first place.  I sincerely hope the Barnes and Noble has a better product that actually works coming out soon, otherwise the company won't exist in the next year, leaving customers who have already purchased the nook stuck with a faulty product and no customer service to back up the warranties.  Totally useless.

          update...

I tried deleting all the books  and starting over.  When I went to download the book again, it said it couldn't be downloaded and the reader crashed.  Things should not be this difficult.

Some of what you point out are probably genuine problems with your Nook. Some are certainly problems with the level of support from B&N. Some have to do with your lack of understanding of how it works.

However, there are lots of folks here who are just thrilled with the Nook. Just because you believe you have had a bad experience doesn't mean it is a bad product.

Anyway, enjoy your iPad. (By the way, it is considerably heavier.)

Happened to me too on initial charge but never again(had it since Christmas)

They are free and dont take up much memory.  You never know when you might need to entertain a kid.

              4) couldn't sync the nook with my computer

What do you mean by sync?   Does the nook even show up a a drive?

it a new product and support will always be a little overwhelmed.   Happens to Apple too with every new product.

              7) Can't do anything on the nook while it's in USB mode

              8) it's really heavy

Didnt you handle one before buying.  Always test drive and dont complain about the milage if you get a SUV with 4wd.

It seems you never asked for help, your first post was to complain and say you are returning the nook color.  You have made 5 posted for now and they are all in this thread.  I have seen many of these same complaints from Apple trolls who have no intention of buying a nook color but want to discourage people looking to buy a nook color and are doing due diligence.  Many of your issues could have been delt with if you had asked for help.

                1.  The USB connection does take a bit to get used to but it will get easier.

                2.  Define quickly.  You need to let it charge 5 hours the first time, no matter what the light says.  Rechargeable batteries are like that.  And use the wall plug.

                3.  You don't delete books from the reader, you archive them and it is best to do so from the web site library.  You can delete them from the web site library also.  Those kids book come free with the nook color.

                4.  The nook color does not sync with your computer, It 'syncs' with the B&N web site.  This is not an ipad.

                5.  Not sure what was happening there.  Once I registered my nook color, it gave me no problems.  Make sure you check for new content.  You could try de-registering it and re-registering it.

                6.  I have had no problems with customer service, in fact I have had great interaction with customer service which I will relate in a future post.  I didn't need the tutorial.

                7.  You only put it in USB mode to transfer files from the PC, kind of hard to read on the nook color while you are moving a video over.  Do not charge the nook color via computer.

                8.  Compare the nook color's weight to a hardback novel, textbook or a Ipad.  The weight is not so bad.

I have been nothing but pleased with my nook color and plan to buy another for my wife soon.

                  1. USB connector/charger cable didn't fit into the nook--it had to be wiggled and pushed in

Why is this such a big deal? I do this with mine as well. When it is plugged in, it is secure and I'm happy with that.

                  2. Only charged for one hour and said that it was fully charged (light turned green), then the battery drained quickly

Did you give it another chance (per another poster's suggestion)?

                  3) Couldn't delete "downloaded" books that I didn't download (kids books that I have no interest in).  Tried deleting them from opeing the nook on my computer and directly deleting them directly from the folder and they still didn't get deleted

If you do a little homework, you'll find out that the master copy is in your online Nook Library on B&N's site. If you delete the master there and resync, it will be gone off of your device.

                  4) couldn't sync the nook with my computer

Not sure what this means. You don't "sync with the computer" like a PDA or anything like that.

There's info online for the right procedure for sideloading eBooks and other electronic content.

                  6) Customer service and tutorials are a joke.  The tutorial basically tells you how to turn it on.  I tried calling the customer support line, but the customer support center was closed.

Online help is quite basic, I would agree. Also, I find B&N doesn't provide updated online help content derived from information available on forums here, etc. This is not unique to B&N though.

                  7) Can't do anything on the nook while it's in USB mode

Yes, this is a limitation, but why is it that important? The reason for connecting the device via USB to a PC is to modify the document content. So why do you want to be messing with the device whilst doing that? Better to get it updated, then enjoy the content afterwards.

                  8) it's really heavy

You didn't know how much it weighed before you bought it? It's heavier than a Kindle, for sure. It doesn't bother me. But it's a matter of personal need/taste.

Not sure where you searched, but several of these issues have been discussed much on this forum. If you really thought you had a defective unit (and from what you've said, I don't think so), you could have returned it and they'd replace it. But it sounds like you've already decided you despise the device and don't want one. That's your choice and that's cool.

                    • Re: Major problems with Nook color

Not meaning to pile on, because there are some things that are Barnes & Noble's fault -such as the poor customer service support after Christmas - but a lot of these issues seem to be self inflicted.

                      1. USB connector/charger cable didn't fit into the nook--it had to be wiggled and pushed in         You seem to have solved this issue.

                      2. Only charged for one hour and said that it was fully charged (light turned green), then the battery drained quickly        The very first paragraph of the quick start instructions tells you to charge it for three hours to get a full charge.  Most electronic products will not accurately tell you what a full charge is the first time you use it.

                      3) Couldn't delete "downloaded" books that I didn't download (kids books that I have no interest in).  Tried deleting them from opening the nook on my computer and directly deleting them directly from the folder and they still didn't get deleted      Barnes & Noble should do a better job of explaining this, but there are numerous posts to explain the Nook.  To delete books, you need to go to the website and look at your digital library (bottom left hand side of your account page).  From there you can delete books.  From the Nook, you can Archive books by holding down on the title in question until the menu appears.

                      4) couldn't sync the nook with my computer    I don't believe there is anyplace where the Nook claims it could sink up with the computer.  When you hook the Nook up to a computer, it will merely show up as a drive - like a flash drive.

Without knowing where you got the book and what format it was in, its impossible to answer this question.  Although if you buy a book from Barnes & Noble, it will automagically download onto the Nook over the Wi-Fi.

                      6) Customer service and tutorials are a joke.  The tutorial basically tells you how to turn it on.  I tried calling the customer support line, but the customer support center was closed.   This is Barnes & Noble's fault.  They should have been more on the ball with Christmas expectations - since they didn't fully sell out of the Nook, they should have realized that they would have a similar heavy load of support needed after Christmas.  I will say that there support was excellent for most of last year in the nine months leading up to Christmas.  Although any search on this website would have easily revealed these issues.

                      7) Can't do anything on the nook while it's in USB mode   And why would you want to?  USB mode is for transferring files onto the Nook... It won't charge the Nook... the only thing you can do is put files onto it.

                      8) it's really heavy  I think a lot of people got stuck on this issue because it seems like the easiest for you to foresee - I mean I would assume that they had some Nooks in the store, and you could have picked one up?  Complaining about the weight, then saying you are going to buy something 50% heavier leaves one open to comments.

Thought I would add my voice here an on other sites.

I had the black and white Nook for about 2 years and was quite happy with it.  It could be read in the sun and the battery life was good.

                        Now for the Nook color:

                        1. It cannot be read in the sun and certainly not with sunglasses on
                        2. I have been through 2 at this point in less than 10months and STILL have issues:
                          1. the battery life is around 3 hours or less
                          2. I have done factory resets multiple times and still the battery life is poor
                          3. After a recent recharge I cannot read any books, I can use the screen for the web and can see the front plate of the book, but cannot read them.
