    Must have Nook HD/HD+ apps

      Now that the Play Store has been available on the Nook Hds for awhile, I thought a thread regarding the best apps available might be beneficial to a lot of us :smileyhappy: Every once in awhile (like tonight) I've come across someone mentioning a useful app that sends me off in search of it. I'm very thankful for this thread and check back often since I tend to learn something new every time that I do.  Please leave a reply with YOUR top 5 favorite Google Play Store/B&N apps and why you've come to think of each of them as a "must have app" for your device. Thanks so much!

          1. Calibre companion (to wirelessly access my very large digital library) 2. Goodreads (to look up books and to access shelves that I've made just for my very large library) 3. Evernote (to keep my thoughts in order, I would be useless without it) 4. Netflix (because even I have to come up from reading for air every once in a while) and 5. Words with friends (to help keep my mind sharp and I get to spend quality (game) time with my dad who lives in Austrailia). So... my list isn't that impressive but here they are, my "don't want to live with out them" apps, lol

              mine would be: 1. evernote - to keep notes to myself, & it syncs with my phone, so I'm not forgetting things. 2. goodreads - to keep up with my series. 3. Comixology/Perfect Viewer - good to read comics on, with look great on the HD+ screen. 4. Netflix - just to catch watch the occasional video. 5. kindle - *gasp, shock, horror! on a nook device?* but I do have a collection of (mostly free) books, but some that weren't available for the nook that I wanted to read...

                  Mine would be Nova Launcher, it gets rid of the revolving shelf on the home page, is completely customizable, and actually makes my Nook UI faster and more responsive.

                    I'm going to check out Comixology for my son's hd, thanks Jaquellae :smileyhappy:

                        1. Dropbox - so I can share files across my phone, pc and Nook wirelessly;
                        2. Evernote - for sharing information across my devices wirelesly;
                        3. Quickpic - for photos as I can exclude junky photos associated with apps & music from my gallery;
                        4. Poweramp - paid app but excellent music player;
                        5. Facebook Messenger - to message fb friends. The messenging part of desktop fb on the Nook is horrible, so this is a must for me.
                        6. Catchup TV/ BBCiplayer radio - for turning my Nook into a small TV set/ radio and BBC iplayer - to catch up on TV programs (may be uk only)

                        I'm considering Dolphin Browser as a personal choice rather than a must have!

                        The brilliant DVD catalyst, which converts your DVD's into movies you can play on the Nook, is more a program for the pc than an app.

                        Also useful, if a bit specialised, is the TuGo app from 02.  It allows me to use my monthly mobile phone call & text allowance on my Nook via wifi if I don't have any 02 network signal.  I guess it's an alternative to the paid service from Skype and Google Talk which call phone numbers not just devices with the apps loaded, and handy if you are going abroad.

                        And top housekeeping apps:

                        • Norton Utilities Task Killer - which will show me which apps are hogging my cpu if I have issues;
                        • File Manager HD Tablet - file manager which shows my SD card nice & clear;
                        • Clean Master - To clear out junk files and clear caches. Apps like Zinio seem to create tons of junk;
                          • Re: Must have Nook HD/HD+ apps
                            Great to see this - I have been trying to confirm that bbc iplayer will definitely work on a Nook before investing for my children or Christmas. Is it straightforward enough - I have read some comments that would suggest it is not compatible with the Nook - just want to make sure before I get these, as they do look great but would need this functionality. Thank you!

                                Hi Ellie,

                                Yes BBC iplayer does work!

                                And it is straightforward.  You just download the BBC iplayer App from the Google Play store and use the App.

                                The complication is with Flash.  Flash is no longer supported by Adobe for Android devices, so it isn't available as a download in Google Play Store. Without Flash you can't run iplayer from the BBC web page on the default Chrome browser.  But you can still run iplayer from the App.

                                However, there are a few web browsers that you can download from Google Play Store which have flash embedded in them already. They are Flash Fox and the paid version of Puffin (1 pound 93 pence).  There is some confusion over whether Dolphin Browser has flash embedded in it or not....

                                Hope that helps!

                                    My top apps are

                                    1.  Evernote:  syncs all my notes and thoughts between my HD, HD+, laptop, desktop and smartphone

                                    2.  Dropbox:  filesharing across all platforms

                                    3.  Comixology:  great comic reading, especially on the HD+ but even passable on the HD

                                    4.  Astro File Manager:  Allows me to surf through all files on HD/HD+, SD-MMC card and my cloud storage

                                    5.  Photoframe:  user-defined slideshows of my pictures

                                      I  am confused. I just bought my Nook HD+ recently and was disappointed to find that I cannot stream videos (TV shows ) from ABC or NBC. I can still stream from CBS and  I get the message that I my device does not support Adobe Flash 9.0. My wife has a first generation Kindle running a 1.2mh processor that can run all these. This Nook has a 1.5 mh processor. Apparently that doesn't mean much. So am I looking at obsolence when all of the networks go to Flash 9.0? I appreciate the fact that  this is a really nice reader but it would be nice to do more.

                                      Is there a way to download the kindle software so that I can do more or is there another browser other than Google that will let me run Flash 9?

                                      Also are Netflix and Hulu+ going to become obsolete in the HD+ because it can't actually play anything?

                                      Any help or info will be appreciated.

                                      Thanks

                                          The issue with Flash on the HD+ is that Adobe/Google no longer support Flash on Android versions greter than 4.  The HD+ operating system is based on Android 4.1 (ICS).   The workaround is to sideload a copy of the Flash APK from Adobe's web site and use the ADB process to install it.  There are other threads on Flash.  The 2nd generation Kindle probably supports Flash because it is an older device.  Then browswer like Boat Browser will work fine to display Flash web sites.  I have done this on my HD+ because my newspaper's web site requires Flash to download the PDF version of the newspaper.

                                          But the bottom line is that the Android world has moved away from Flash.  The world in general is moving to HTML5 for streaming video.  Don't blame the HD+ as it never supported Flash to begin with because it's a newer product.  Blame Google and Adobe.  Suggest you search this forum for "Flash" and you'll find workarounds that are very successful.
