    NST Battery Indicator Issue

    nlstein

When I go to charge my NST the following happens:

      1. I plug in the standard NST charger and cable and begin to charge

      2. Charging goes fine until I reach 99%

      3. At 99% the NST shows "not charging"

      4. I wait a little while and suddenly the NST shows "FULL" and 100%

Also, sometimes when I plug in to charge the NST show "Not Charging". I then turn the NST completely off and on again (re-boot) and it works as stated above.

This can't be normal, can it? Is there something easy I can do to stop this or should I just live with it since, although it's strange behavior, the net result is my NST works fine, discharges normally and seems to charge fully.

I think it is normal....It's actually better for re-chargeable battery life not to charge all the way to 100%.  It probably has a limiter - stops trying to charge when full, to protect the battery.  So, it stops charging at less than 100% (or tries)....then jumps to "charged".

For the longest battery life - avoid extremes.  Don't completely discharge, and don't completely charge.  Keep it between 20 and 80% charged.  End of the world if you forget and get 100% charge?  No.  But your battery may last longer with a little more attention.

Thanks for the reply. Do you experience this behavior on your NST?

I must say that, while I am no expert on the type of battery used in the NST, I've never heard the 20%-80% rule suggested before. In fact, B&N themselves has always suggested to charge to 100% (as has every other battery powered item I currently own). Does this suggestion come from experience or technical knowledge? Are the manufactures tying to get us to make our batteirs live a shorter life so they can sell us new items faster?

I hope this link works....This is collected reading on lithium-ion battery life.  See Table 4@How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries - Battery University

So I've read the article (somewhat old) and after reading most of the comments find that there is really no
"right" answer as to how to charge my battery. The comments are all over the place. Modern devises use chargers that slow the charge rate as the battery gets close to full (some actually stop charging when full) so it seems likely that with today's devices one should just follow the instructions from the manufacturer.

BTW while heat is indeed not a friend to your modern battery, neither is extreme cold (below 20 degrees F or so).

Net result of this discussion is - there is no "right" answer as each devise, battery and use is different.

Also, non of this answers my question concerning my NST. Does anyone see the same reaction (stops charging at 99% and then reports "Full - 100%" and little later?

nlstein - I just tested charging my NST. It started at 94 percent. Eventually it registered 100 percent, so it did not stop at 99. I wouldn't worry about it, though. I have had other devices that would stop at 99 and I didn't notice any performance issues. I would think any meter that is only off by 1 percent is doing pretty good, especially since these things aren't sending men to the moon.

I see it on my NC when I forget and let it charge that long.

Can't say for sure if mine is doing this or not, as I tend to plug it in and walk away while it is charging.

What you are describing in the first part sounds perfectly normal.

Not sure about the second part (not charging, rebooting, then it charges normally). I definitely have not experienced that.

But, like you said, otherwise it seems to be charging/discharging & operating fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
