          It is Android 4.0.3.

And this is why I won't be getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook.  I'm pretty sure Barnes and Noble will be in charge of updates and I really doubt they'll keep up.  As it is now, there are apps I can't download to my Nook HD because the Android OS is outdated.

Even though the main software pushes have been coming from Samsung and the Nook software is updated through Google Play, but okay I guess you are right...

Are the main software updates coming from Samsung?  I haven't been able to find that information.  As far as the Nook software being updated through Google Play, that would depend on Barnes and Noble committing to keeping the software up to date.  If an Android update were to create a glitch with the Nook software, could we count on Barnes and Noble fixing that problem in a timely manner?  Or, will they just tell all of us who bothered to call to reset our device to factory settings?  Don't discount the idea of an Android OS update screwing up the Nook software.  When Android was updated to KitKat on my phone, the Audible app suddenly couldn't access any of the audiobooks that I had on my SD card.  I talk to them and they were aware of the issue, sent a patch, and had the app fixed in a couple of days.  Based on 4-1/2 years of experience with Nook, I don't have much confidence that they could fix this kind of problem quickly, if at all.

                        What is the difference between:

                        1. Buying the Samsung Tab 4 at a non-B&N retail outlet, and then installing the B&N Nook app (the one customized for the Tab 4).
                        2. Buying the Samsung Tab 4 from B&N.

Is there any difference (other than price and B&N credits)?

Back to the OP and the original thread topic:  If you want a more modern Android version on your HD+, install CyaongenMod v11 (Android 4.4.4) and sideload the Nook app.

Somebody tried that and was unable to get the custom Nook app to load on the standard Samsung Tab.  It will only load on the Nook-branded device.

I was, after some mucking around in build.prop, able to get the "Nook-only" nook app to download from the store to a CM11-running 8.4.

What it wouldn't do was work, but I could get it installed and at least partially launched.

As far as "will BN keep updating to keep up with the Android variant that Samsung makes available for the tablet?"

Very good question.  It took BN at least three weeks to get their Android app to run under Android L after they were warned that it wouldn't run.

My post noting that the Nook app wasn't working was made shortly before the public release of L - meaning, after L had been in a lot of folks' hands for many weeks.  L launched and it was a couple of weeks later that BN was able to run under it.

                                So that's the risk.

But then the other side:  The Samsung Note 8, a flagship tablet from about 18 months ago, is just getting Android 4.4 after releasing with Android 4.1 and getting a 4.2 update pretty fast.  I don't know if there was ever a 4.3 release for it.

Risk or benefit?  Bug or feature?

I understand in regards to loading the custom Nook app on the Samsung.  What about installing the standard Nook app on the standard Samsung?  My understanding is that there are two Nook apps in the Android Market Google Play Store.  Is there that much of a real difference in functionality between the two?

Just to be clear, the standard Nook app (sideloaded) runs just fine on CM-11 on the HD+ (the OP's device).  No messing with build.prop needed.

The standard Nook app runs just fine.  In fact, when I first got my NGTS, the first thing it did was to duplicate the configuration of my Android phone, same wallpaper, same Chrome bookmarks, and it automatically installed every app I had on my phone (except for one or two incompatible ones).  One result was that I found I had both the new custom Nook app and the old standard one that I have on my phone.  They use separate logins and file storage.  I like the custom one a lot better, so eventually deleted the other.

I think that for the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook Samsung is doing the software.  Unlike the prior Nooks (which ran a custom launcher and other custom functions like settings) the Samsung software is not as locked down.

I actually run a different launcher (home screen) from Google Play so I never see the Nook HD+ interface (except for settings) unless I want to.  That is -- when I run in native Nook mode at all.  Usually I boot into CyanogenMod KitKat via SD -- as Dean Gibson suggests.  One regret of KitKat (and there are so few versus the benefits) is the lack of Flash support.  But there is an easy work-around for this using Dolphin Browser.

So I think the risk of no OS updates for the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook are much lower than for the HD+ -- B&N never updated to a newer Android version, they just fixed bugs to the released system.  But if you always want updates use something like CM.

I believe it is Android 4.0.4.  From /system/build.prop:

I am, but you don't need to be.  In fact, you don't even have to own a Nook.  For the HD+, you just download the nookhdplus_2_2_0_update.npk file from B&N's servers.  That file is a .ZIP file with (for an HD+) a 419 byte header (which the Linux variant of unzip notes but ignores). Just unzip the system/build.prop file from that .npk file.

For the HD+, each of B&N versions 2.0.5, 2.1.0, 2.1.1, and 2.2.0 all show using Android version 4.0.4.

Here is the result of a scan of all Nook build.prop  files for the version string, except for the 1st Edition:

Which NOOK apps were incompatible with your NOOK Sammie?

I was trying to get a look at the samnook-only Nook app, just out of curiosity.  I think I might've wanted a look at the database it stored content locations in as well.

That got me to a point where the app installed but did not finish launching.

The regular Nook app runs just fine on the device, a tab pro 8.4 running cm11.

It was the phone running Lollipop that took a few weeks to be able to run the Nook app as well  That was goofy from my perspective, but pretty frustrating for folks running N7s that had updated over the air, or anyone with one of the L-at-launch devices.  One of which, the Nexus 9, has a nice wide aspect ratio screen and probably makes a nice reader.  I don't read a lot of books on the phone;  I tend to read Flipboard and grazeRSS (formerly known as Newsrob) on the phone.
