Nook line being discontinued in 2014?

It has been reported that Barnes & Noble will discontinue the Nook line in 2014, and the Nook division will be sold to Microsoft. How will B&N survive if these events transpire?

Reported?  Or spilled out of Amazon's dream bucket?

I seriously doubt both premises in the rumor you're spreading.

There are Microsoft documents offering 1B for the Nook Media division, and the NY Times had a source who said they were authentic.

BN's share price went up 25% yesterday on the news - BN's been trying to find a suitor for a long time now.

Given the price of the offer - apparently it works out to 27/share for the company as a whole - and the jump in the stock price, at ths point the BN board is basically forced to sell.  MS may not be the ultimate buyer, but unless the Play Store news is followed up with an announcement at Google i/o that Google's bought the Nook Media division, this seems like a lock.

The one part that confuses me is that Nook Media may not actually be the bit of BN which sells ebooks.  If that's true I don't have any idea why MS is offering money for it, though.

To all the nay sayers check here: http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/08/microsoft-mulling-nook-media-llc-purchase-for-1-billion/ Nothing confirmed for sure, but possible. As for B&N discontinuing the Nook, here is an excerpt fro the article cited:

"The documents also reveal that Nook Media plans to discontinue its Android-based tablet business by the end of its 2014 fiscal year as it transitions to a model where Nook content is distributed through apps on “third-party partner” devices. Speculation about the plan to discontinue the Nook surfaced in February. The documents we have are not clear on whether the third-party tablets would be Microsoft’s own Windows 8 devices, tablets made by others (including competing platforms) or both. Third-party tablets, according to the document, are due to get introduced in 2014."

Will happen? When will it happen? We'll just have to watch and see.

I have no affiliation  with any of the tablet companies out there, but have owned 8 different models over the past three years, including 3 versions of the Apple Ipad. I know that nobody likes to hear that their product is being discontinued, and to date this is all rumor regarding B&N; BUT in today's world of electronics, the scene is changing so rapidly regarding features and pricing that what you buy today will be outdated in a year, two at the tops. It doesn't matter if it's discontinued or not, you WILL want a faster, more improved version, I promise!  I purchased an Asus "MeMo Pad" (7" tablet) just last month, and the company announced this past week that a new, greatly improved version of this same tablet will be out in August...for the same price! The version that I purchased had just come out this year, 2013. How does that make me feel? Since this kind of thing WILL happen, then my advice is to first  buy a tablet from a reputable company. You want reliability over everything else.  Outside of Apple, I don't know of any other tablet brand, besides Barnes & Noble, that has actual physical stores that you can go into and speak to employees there that actually know the tablet and can be of great assistance. Next, go for value for the dollar.  The Apple Ipad 16gb sells for $499.  The Nook HD+ 16gb has just been reduced to $149. You are not investing your life savings in this Nook! This is as small an investment as can be made in the large screen tablet market.  A pair of popular headphones that my daughter just bought are $199! There is my "two cents" on the subject.

Recently i bought a NOOK HD. Fantastic buy at such a great price.  What a bargain.  What a wonderful device with resolution comparable to the Apple retina display.  I support Barnes and Noble brick and mortar since I tend to pass my weekends browsing through their book shelves.  Whenever I can i would buy a book here and there; usually mysteries; self help; and their cache of religious books.  We all know what amazon did was amazing but nothing beats supporting brick and mortar companies like Barnes and Noble.  We all should help them survive these economic crunch they're in.  I'll continue buy more of their graphic novels; their books and also their digital contents.  I would hope one day amazon and Barnes and Noble team up to do a powerhouse partnership; maybe use their store as a medium for thier mail drop off location. It's important Barnes and Noble survive; its a place where young minds congreates; students meets and drink their favorite beverages and discuss their ideas.  I hope their NOOK HD thrives since it's such an great tablet;  if only one research the spec they would be sold.  Sure it's missing a camera but the other features; the multiple user setups exceeds the other single usage tables.

What will be bad is that BN's allready horrible customer service will be even worse as you'll likely have to contact the outside source for help or service! That is unless you happen to live near a store which many of us do not.

This is, on the whole speculation. I have a source within B&N who says that the Nook is NOT going away. What will be changing is who makes the Nook. B&N currently manufacture the device; they are looking to outsource the manufacture to a tech hardware/software company to produce it with the Nook label. This is not unlike Asus manufacturing the Google Nexus, or HP manufacturing under the Compaq label. The brick and mortar locations will still sell the new Nooks, as well as provide customer assistance.

Unless something has changed since the Nook Color was released, B&N's Nook line is produced in Taiwan   by a Inventec.  B&N creates the specs and Inventec builds them with the B&N lable.  B&N has never had a it's own manufacturing facility to make nooks.

However it is possible B&N could farm out production to another mfg,  yet that doesn't really make sense.

You're right distinguished Bibliophile, i misquoted my stockbroker.  What Barnes and Noble is REALLY doing in 2014........they are starting a Rent-a-Donkey business in New York City to compete with the Rent-a-Bike service.  It's green, it's organic, it fertilizes the roadways.  THAT is a prime millenial enterprise!!!!  Get in on the ground floor.  Buy stock before it gets priced out of reach!!!

UGH I just got the nook hd + and it sucks. Now if they are gonna get rid of it, there won't be any more updates or anything. BOO

No one ever continues making the same device forever, and eventually everything reaches EOL and ceases to receive updates.  Welcome to the world of tech.

As for the nook line being discontinued, B&N has stated that they will continue to have nook-branded devices, but that they are partnering with a tech company to make them.  This is pretty much the opposite of "no more nooks" or "getting rid of the nook" so, no, the nook like is not being discontinued at this time.

If you just got it, why don't you just take it back if you don't like it? There are plenty of options rather than doing the martyrdom thing with something you're so unhappy with. You can even read most NOOK books on other Android devices.

I agree.  When I was searching for a tablet, I found that there was not one device that fit my needs 100%.  If you have tried the HD+ and don't like it, return it and go purchase one that better fits your needs.  For me, with the addition of Google Play and the price drop the HD+ works fine.

                                    • Re: Nook line being discontinued in 2014?

Regardless of who or what happens with the Nook brand, the Nook HD+ is currently the best bang for your buck as far as tablets go.  You can easily make it an Android tablet running the current version of Android without rooting it by looking at N2A cards.  This company makes, or allows you to download to a specific class of micro SD card, with the software loaded.  You put the micro card in and it boots to the current Android version you bought/downloaded.  If you want to go back to Nook software, remove the card and turn back on...no harm, no foul and makes this the most versatile tablet out there with incredible hardware specs!

                                      I love it...
