Trouble with reader app on Nook Galaxy Tab 4

    ron_nelson

Anyone else having trouble with the nook reader app on the Galaxy Tab 4?

Mine is stuck using text-to-speech, which is also messing up paging through the book.

I've gone through settings for both the nook app and the general accessibility settings with no success.

      Anyone have an answer?

      Thanks,

      Ron

Well, it took two factory resets, but the nook reader finally has stopped switching into auto-mode and text-to-speech. hopefully it doesn't turn itself on again, but I needed to factory reset without restoring any settings or backups from previous loads.

          Happy thoughts...

Oh man, it's my third Nook - I love them and want them to survive-succeed - but I have had the SAME problem today, with my new 10.1 Tab 4 Nook. Magazines read fine, other apps fine - reader app keeps the guide atop/below the book, hiding last line a bit, and you can't touch/highlight properly - it keeps trying to read the book to me ("auto mode") etc. Going to the Table of Contents sort of solves the problem, until it crops back up again, and in all books. I made sure to do all the upgrades, etc. Even did a device reset at the store. (You mean I have to do that AGAIN? It's not a huge hassle but... !!!) I'll be calling them tomorrow, maybe a fix is in the works?;-/

I think I may have found one of the things that sets the Nook reader app into this state:

The little book outline icon on the home page. The one in the lower left corner, that is supposed to bring you right into the last book you were reading.  Don't touch it! I had to factory-reset to clear the issue again.

Table of contents hasn't worked for me, but if I miss-touch will prob try that first. Ugly bug though, very painful. I went with the B&N tablet because their platform reader's always been one of the best. A few more factory resets will probably cure me of that...

Well Ron, I had the problem without getting near that icon - when I was with my favorite B&N Nookologist Darlene, first thing we did after device reset was download a book, open it and ... problem remained. Good clue though. She mentioned they had prepped employees to be ready to help folks with an upgrade, then said it was being pulled. I'm on 1.2.1.120 - you as well? Ugly bug indeed! Not what B&N needs as they take on the Amazon mega-force;-/

And it bugged out on me last night when I tried switching the display/font to white on black to read in bed.

                  So frustrated...

Force stopping the nook app, clearing cache, reverting updates all have no effect on this bug.

If this can't be fixed I'll be forced to return my Galaxy Tab Nook.

Well get this - I went back and actually swapped Nooks for a new one, knowing odds were at best 50-50 issue would go away. Just finished charging it, opened a few books and -- the damn thing talks to me each time, telling me which page I'm on, and the reader tools atop/bottom of the screen don't go away, and it says 'entering auto mode' when I tap a word on the screen, highlight the words to that point, I tap again and it says 'entering manual mode' and shuts up ... but the tools, esp. at bottom of screen hide words.

Again, I go to futz with the speech to text options, this is ... does anyone from B&N ever read/weigh in on these boards? I will probably - barring a fix, after squawking loud on the Nook Facebook page - turn it in for a refund, keep my old Nook going (have tons of mag subscriptions and several books through it so I'm not just waltzing to Kindle-land) and ... hope they find a fix for us and probably others with this set of vexing issues.

Like I say, I read mags far more than books - and those are fine, everything works right. But the book reader is VERY flawed - somewhere in the BN/Samsung/Google mesh of software is bad mojo indeed.

Too bad. The screen is bright, the apps run great, but ... an e-book reader that doesn't read e-books without frustration is ... not going to fly.

OK, I did the factory reset again, and have not loaded any of my Android apps from the play store yet.

So that works out to about 24 hours without hitting the bug. Maybe the Nook app has trouble with LastPass? That's about the only app I installed that goes deeper and might interact. Shame though, as the service option was really nice for entering passwords in apps.

But it's only been one day. If this keeps happening I'll be returning mine.

Hah! And I have Dashlane. Well the store lady wants to step through erase/re-register just for the Nook - no Google, no Samsung - to start isolating it - she said I'm the first in like 60 customers to report this. I've gotten a bit beyond the issue - the LOWER reader tool gets out of the way of the text at bottom of screen when I pick a chapter, but the speech to text when I tap the screen still happens. I'm torn between keeping it for all I love and saying I've had enough. I'll probably choose middle ground - try to see if we can isolate it and then I can post a fix because there HAS to be others who've run into this! I'm not doing any arcane funky things!

PS - do you have magazines as well? They work fine, right? The reader controls all work just right? What IS it with the book reader? Oh and now I have the Nook app crashing on my sporadically too. Sigh.

So far so good today.   I haven't installed lastpass and have page turn

                                effects turned off.

From what I remember the bug was triggered when the nook reader app can't

                                keep up with events.

I'll see if things are still good tomorrow. Maybe it's the last pass

                                service choking it...

BY JOVE I THINK WE'VE GOT IT. I uninstalled Dashlane - a great password manager BTW - and it's working GREAT - no speech to text, no funky tools action, press a word and the definition pops up! It probably is because Dashlane and I presume LastPass offer alternate keyboards - I wasn't using it, BUT I bet that was the issue! Knock on wood! Let me know if things proceed well for you and I'll keep track - thanks for mentioning your password manager, that was a clue to do what I did;-)

I've also been having the same issue, and am a LastPass user. After resetting a couple of times yesterday (the last time yesterday, without activating any backup/restore capability) I thought it started acting better. However, after adding a few apps back on from Google Play, including LastPass, the reader started talking again!

Tonight I have reset (again, without activating backup/restore functionality) and have not yet reinstalled LastPass. So far, so good. I think you're really onto something with the interaction of LastPass and the Nook reader. If I run into anything new that appears to trigger an issue, I'll let you guys know. So far, so good.......

Thanks, the double factory reset without restoring previous settings worked for me too. A single reset did not work.

I suspect the S Voice app caused my problem. I launched it and upgraded the voice per its suggestion just before the reader app started misbehaving by reading the books outloud.

This isn't a fix for the B&N app problem, but perhaps a workaround will keep you going until B&N gets their act together. The Mantano Reader and Aldiko apps, available in the Google Play Store, can handle B&N DRM. When you open your first B&N-sourced ebook, you'll have to enter your B&N account name and credit card number, just as if you're sharing B&N ebooks with another NOOK user. After you've done that once, it'll open B&N ebooks without further prompts.

You'll have to point either alternative app to the appropriate folder to find the ebooks. (I'm assuming the NGTS store the actual epubs on the device like the Android app does.)

You can read magazines in the B&N app and ebooks in Mantano or Aldiko. Hardly a great solution, but perhaps good enough?

There are free, limited versions of Mantano, or the full version is only a few bucks. The Aldiko reader also supports B&N DRM.

                                      Hi all,

We're working to resolve this issue with TTS. For now it looks as though some apps such as Dashlane or Lastpass are triggering the read all.

As a work around, double tapping the screen while in "auto" mode will bring it over to manual - which will allow you to operate normally.

I'm sorry for all the headaches - we should have this patched in a future update.

                                      - Alex

                                          4ddogs

I'm glad to hear that the problem is being worked on.

Here are a few observations in case they help.

I had the problem, but I never installed or used Dashlane or LastPass, so they are not always the cause.

Also, going to manual mode is of limited use because in manual mode the bottom lines of the page are obscured by a panel showing a slider that allows you to select a page. That slider always appears for me in manual mode, and I could not find anyway to clear it, save by picking a chapter from the menu, but that forces you to go to start of a chapter.

Finally, while in manual mode, the slightest vibration would send it back into auto-mode and it would start reading out loud again.

This behavior is unique to the Nook reader app, and seems to have nothing to do with the TTS accessibility feature.
