Over 6 months to provide an commerce site update?  Something is wrong somewhere and this issue is not ANSWERED without a response with a date when it will be fixed IMHO

I spoke to their tech support people on Sunday (1-31-16) about the download feature which is similar to the instant read feature. I was told the download feature was never coming back and I suspect the same with the instant read. They (or the publisher is who they blamed) do not want books on laptops or PCs. Very depressing to go through all the DRM crap all over again.

BN's explanation seems like hogwash, to me, since Kindle and Kobo books can be downloaded to one's PC, despite - to quote Tony Soprano - "'all that that entrails[sic]".

I'm 99.9% sure that explanation is hogwash as pretty much every other site allows for reading on the web. I get the feeling B&N is run by a bunch of old fuddy duddies that don't like this newfangled internet thingamajig and hence don't think anyone else should be using it, let alone using it to it's fullest extent. Just about everything they've done in the last few years has either been way late or designed to make the user experience as annoying as possible.

Yes, I think "B&N is run by a bunch of old fuddy duddies", but that doesn't explain the late deliveries.  I think that they (for whatever reason) don't want to pay what it takes to hire good software people, and when they DO pay more than they think they should, they're not getting competent people, and that feeds the "don't pay outrageous salaries" syndrome.

Clearly B&N had a commitment to make a good hardware product, and that succeeded.  It explains why B&N made outstanding hardware (which received very good reviews up through the HD series), while the software was at best mediocre.  This attitude (or policy) extended into the web site, which often languished for months waiting for the "web site upgrade".  Does anyone think that Jeff Bezos would tolerate the Amazon site having similar defects for that period?

Curious as to what you mean by "tech support" is that different from the regular customer support on the B&N website?

This is really unbelievable and unacceptable to me that something like this could possibly take this long to update/fix. I can go to Amazon and instantly read any books I've purchased on any computer I use. What is the incentive for me to purchase books through B&N now? I've tried to stick by B&N but you are forcing me to buy any ebooks from Amazon. If I'm already buying ebooks from them, I might as well order physical books from them while I'm at it.

That's cool.  Unfortunately it doesn't work on Chrome.  But I was able to use it with IE.

Wow.  I hadn't missed it that much because I have enough devices, and have Nook Study on my laptop, but it's nice to know that the read online function is available again.  The rationale for removing it never made a whole lot of sense.

I mentioned earlier that the read instantly is back. In the meantime my old desktop PC died and I bought a laptop with Windows 10. There is a Nook app that you can run on Windows 8 or 10 that is very similar to the app they have for tablets and phones. The experience is very much like reading on a tablet. It always works, unlike the browser version.

I was irritated by the delay in the browser fix (well over a year) but I will always be a B&N fan and will shop there first.
