Headstrong, sarcastic, and fiercely intelligent, magician-turned-FBI agent Jessica Blackwood knows better than anyone how easily people can be fooled. So she's not happy about being sent to Louisiana on what appears to be a wild goose chase hinging on an elderly man's recollection of an event that occurred decades ago. Especially because her boss, FBI consultant Dr. Jeffrey Ailes, has paired her up with young, earnest rookie agent Nadine. After risking her life to help the Bureau catch the serial killer of the century, this is her reward?
As she and Nadine clash about how to handle their strange assignment, Jessica must accept that, despite her best efforts, she's having trouble moving beyond her past as the rising star in a dysfunctional family of magicians. Raised in a world dedicated to deception, her refusal to accept things at face value is one of her strengths—but is it also a weakness that could cause her undoing?
In this compelling short story from Andrew Mayne, master illusionist and the author of Angel Killer, we see a new side to Jessica Blackwood—and get an electrifying sneak peak at her next adventure, Name of the Devil.

OK, so last week's Free Fridays entry at the NOOK Blog directed readers to B&N Readouts, to access future Free Fridays selections, beginning today. As I write, there doesn't seem to be any particular title specified for this week,at that site. Rather, there's one selection for each of multiple genres, all listed under the banner "FREE FRIDAYS: Weekend reading—on us."
Unsure how this differs from the everyday Readouts process, I clicked on the upper left title, Submerged (Alaskan Courage Series #1) by Dani Pettrey | 9781441271167 | NOOK Book (eBook) | Barnes & Noble, and found that it's free. (However, I already own it). I then clicked on a few other Readouts selections, but none of those is free. Therefore, I surmise: whatever title is listed in the upper left-hand corner, directly under the "FREE FRIDAYS: Weekend reading—on us" banner, is the Free Fridays selection.

A man and woman who were once a couple confront their past in a brush with a treasure-seeking killer in this steadily paced thriller. Bailey Craig left her small Alaskan hometown 12 years ago and vowed she’d never return. But when her beloved Aunt Agnes dies in a plane crash, she’s forced to revisit the place—and some of her demons. Meanwhile, a former boyfriend, Cole McKenna, runs a local diving shop and helps police whenever they need his underwater expertise. When the authorities find the body of an alleged tourist who rented from his shop and another not long after, he realizes he needs Bailey’s expertise in Russian to help decipher some of the clues. With the help of a 19th-century diary, will they find the murderer or only end up in harm’s way? Pettrey’s debut novel is a thoughtful attempt to capture both love and suspense in this intricately plotted mystery. While the writing is clumsy at times, the novel introduces the reader to some memorable characters who must rely on their faith just as much as each other. Agent: Chip MacGregor. (May)

Julia Broeder is only six months shy of graduating from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania when one small decision spirals out of control and results in her expulsion. Hoping to travel the world as a missionary doctor, her only choice is to return back home . . . or throw herself upon the mercy of Ashton Carlyle.
Formal and straight-laced, Ashton is not pleased to see an expelled Julia arrive at his Manhattan office. His position as an attorney for the Vandermark family's world-famous shipping empire entails taking care of the Broeders, longtime employees of the Vandermarks. But Ashton has no intention of using his employer's resources in defense of Julia's impulsive and reckless actions.
What Ashton does not expect are a scathing reprimand from none other than the Vandermark family patriarch and the bewildering resistance from Julia herself when he's forced to change his tune. At an impasse, Ashton and Julia are unprepared for the revelations that arise or the adventure that awaits them.
In this novella, award-winning novelist Elizabeth Camden introduces readers to the world of the grand Hudson River Valley estate Dierenpark and the enigmatic Vandermark family. Includes an extended preview of Until the Dawn, Camden's full-length Dierenpark novel.
